Imagine being a hard-working woman with a successful career and a well-known name. Now imagine making 0.07% of what your male counterpart is making. Unfortunately, in today's world, imagining this is not impossible, seeing as though it is happening right now in Hollywood. Michelle Williams, a famous actress known for The Greatest Showman, made merely $1,000 when asked to reshoot certain scenes from All The Money In The World due to the abolishment of an actor pegged with sexual misconduct charges. I know that things are quite different in Hollywood and countless hard-working Americans are not dealing with that volume of money. However, this example perfectly ties into an issue that has plagued women in multiple countries from the second they entered the workforce: the gender wage gap. For if women in 2018 can work, receive the same education as men, and hold high tier positions such as CEO, how does it make sense that they are still making less than men for the same positions?
It is a fact that some people do not believe in the gender wage gap and if they do believe in it, they believe that the gap is justifiable based on certain factors. However, those people who advocate and support the gender wage gap do not even know what the true definition is since it is often used incorrectly and applied to situations where it should not be. These differences come from a variety of factors such as race, age, education, dedication, and experience. As a female citizen of the United States, I am lucky that my wage gap is not as large as wage gaps from other countries. When I enter the workforce I will make 79 cents to every dollar that men make; however, if I worked in Canada I would not fare as well, seeing as though Canadian women only make 73.5 since compared to Canadian men (Schieder; Grant). If the gender wage gap lessens at the same rate each year as it is now, it is estimated that Caucasian women will see equal pay in 41 years or in the year 2059. For African American women, however, another 65 years is added merely because the color of their skin is different from others. The worst though is for Hispanic women; equality in pay is not expected to come to them until 2233 (Pay). This all goes to show truly how unique each case can become. An analysis by Oxfam Canada and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives states that the gender wage gap is not merely because the stereotypical woman works less than men or because women have a different degree of education or experience. The analysis states that “Even when all of these factors are considered, the result remains the same: a wage gap” (Grant). Sometimes, women are not given the chance to make more money because employers think that men are stronger, smarter, or more experienced or skilled (Gender Differences 84). This obviously means that women do not get a fair chance to get higher paying jobs in some cases. However, women know how to fight and try to make things right. An example of this is in the article “Understanding the ‘‘Family Gap’’ in Pay for Women with Children”. Jane Waldfogel states that if women had “not increased their investments in education and experience, the gender pay gap would have widened in the 1980s simply due to the changes in the overall wage structure” (140).
Women’s pay significantly increased in the 1970’s. This was largely due to more women getting degrees. Since then however the gap decreases very little annually. “At the rate of change between 1960 and 2015, women are expected to reach pay equity with men in 2059,” (Miller). Women cannot wait for the gap to fix itself.
Research shows wage gaps are solely a product of the choices of the second party. Woman have chosen what level of education they wish to pursue, the fields they wish to be in, and where they work. When looking back at a censuses of the early-to-mid 1900’s the majority of working women worked at small enterprises rather than booming companies: large Firms pay at higher rates, their payout going predominantly to males of the working class (Rubenstien, Michael Harvey). When taken under the scope, large enterprises rejected woman workers, and if they did hire, the lady’s income would be significantly smaller. Consequently, companies would deny the reason being that they were of a different sex, and rather blame it on how little education the skill the person had, “Frequently, even when given raises, their new pay still comes short of that of their male coworkers.
Canadian women earned 87 cents to every dollar made by men in 2015, according to Statistics Canada in a statement released on International Women’s Day. This statement was released to show how today’s wage gap has improved compared to the 77 cents women made to every man’s dollar in 1981 (CBC News). It’s meant to represent an improvement and is supposed to be a good thing, yet it is not. Why? Because this statistic should not even exist in the first place.
So many people have had issues with this wage gap, people with different colored skin to what gender they are. There are women who will get paid 75% of what men get paid just because of their jobs or because people think that they should get paid less because they get stuck with the housework or they are taking care of the elders. To me that is ridiculous, women and men shouldn’t be getting paid the way people see them. Most people think that men have harder jobs and women get the easier jobs but, that isn’t always true.
It is time to face the facts and find solutions for this epidemic. To obtain a better grasp of the severity of the gender wage gap, it is important to understand the data. Every year, especially around election time, new statistics are released asserting that despite considerable efforts to close the wage gap between women and men, it still exists. Statistically, the general consensus is that the wage gap has gotten better, but it is still present. So as long as women are receiving less money than their male counterparts in a myriad of jobs, they will be unable to attain true progress in moving up the socio-economic ladder.
