Everyday people from all walks of life leave the familiar behind and immigrate to places that are not so familiar. Along their journey, they are confronted with expected and unexpected trials and tribulations. Often immigrants risk life and limb searching for family members. In search of a better life, they endure unimaginable hardships. While students going to college are safeguarded from most of the hardships faced by Enrique during his journey, there is a parallel in the motivations for going, the possibility of something better. They are trying to improve their situation and make themselves better in the process. They strive for a better career and life in general, just like Enrique and other immigrants. Enrique wanted to find his mother who had moved to America without him years earlier. She was searching for a better life for him. However, she never came back for him and eventually she stopped calling. He was not doing well. He was plagued by a drug addiction and was losing the people that loved and cared for him. His uncle tried to do everything he could to help Enrique. Unfortunately, the uncle was robbed and murdered. His aunt threw him out. The girl he loved was being told to find someone better because he had nothing to offer her. His town was run by criminals, …show more content…
They seek to gain knowledge, to be exposed to ideas and philosophies that will enhance their lives. One of the main reasons to obtain a college education is the hope of using it to find a job that will enable them to live a comfortable life with a financially secured future. Some students go with the hope of meeting that one special person who will always care for them. Some students go to college so that they can move up in life. If they work hard and strive for improvement every day, hopefully, they can have a better life than their
The book I am reading is Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario. I predict that the author will explore the human rights issue of Immigration Laws and the plight of illegal aliens in the United States. I believe that this issue will be important in the story because Enrique the main character in the story is very driven to find his mother who has gone herself illegally to the United States to earn money to provide an education for her children and to better the life of her family. I made this prediction because Lourdes leaves her children in Honduras as she goes to make money in the United States and her son Enrique is left saying “Donde esta mi mami?” “Where is my mom?”
In chapter two of the book Enrique’s Journey, Enrique has made a total of seven attempts trying to cross the borders. In the first attempt, la migra caught Enrique and his friend, Jose del Carmen Bustamante, while they were riding the train from Honduras and to Veracruz in Central Mexico. They got sent back to Guatemala on El Bus de Lagrimas, the Bus of Tears. In the second attempt, Enrique traveled alone and got caught by the police. They, once again, put him on the bus and sent him back to Guatemala.
While reading Enrique’s Journey, written by Sonia Nazario, a lot of themes were brought out throughout the book that served different meaning in Enrique’s story. The theme that stood out to me, was his journey because Enrique traveled all the way from Honduras to find his mom, who stayed in the United States. There are times in the book when he falls victim to his own shortcomings: doing drugs, tantalizing his mother, mismanaging his finances. He is ready to take yet another journey, this time marked by responsibility instead of adolescent rebellion and resentment. However, Enrique's journey is not only physical, but also mental as he grows from a boy to a man.
I most aspects of the literature circle from the reading of Enrique’s Journey to the unique ideas and views each of us shared. I have nearly nothing negative to say about the literature circles, except that the “connector” appears to it a bit harder than the other members of the group considering they write more, from what I have seen. Although, you could say that it is fair considering that each member will be the connector once. Although, I enjoyed reading the nonfiction book Enrique’s Journey. With this in mind, I would say that The literature circles are doing fine other than a few minor issues.
From there, they were all alone. None of them knew English or the way to a safe shelter but they continued on in search of a better life in which they would flourish. Many immigrants from all over the world see America as the country where success is blind to race. Here, they
Sacrifices have been performed forever and a day since ancient times when people thought that a sacrifice of a human life would stop natural disasters from happening and not going on with that ritual was anger the gods they believed. Today we see sacrifices on our daily bases but not to the point of killing, more examples of today sacrifices will be a mother not eating to feed her kids or a boy that is very poor and have almost nothing sharing the food someone’s gave him with others, present sacrifices are not as extreme but they surely have a strong meaning that strengths the bond between that person that sacrifices and the person that receive, but not in all cases a sacrifice is seen the same way most of the time is perceive with negativity if the receiver is blind and is not inform about the sacrifice.
Many people take for granted the small things within their lives, whether it be something as small as the soft bed one sleeps in every night to the warm meals and the tender laughs shared between their loved ones; whichever the case may be, countless fail to appreciate them. It is something that has always been there, something numerous did not know could be taken away, let alone overnight. However, through Enrique’s Journey, this point is highly emphasized. Being torn away from his mother devastates Enrique, he never could of imagined life without his mother at such a young age. He is forced to live every day without the tender affection he had grown accustomed to, and eventually craved.
The next day she stood him up and stole all his money. This is where the boys had to figure out how they were going to make money, without stealing. They needed money, so that are able to eat. Right then and there is when Miguel realized stealing was a problem. He would practically rather starve, then to have to steal.
For many people, college is an important key for their future. Some people go to college for the job opportunities and the new windows it can open. Others go just for the education and experience. A good education is beneficial from many different viewpoints; in truth, it is a possibility that one's adult life could be much harder than people care to think. One can have better wealth, is less likely to be unemployed, and a much higher chance of being closer to your family.
Though there are many individuals who believe that college is not for everyone, attending college and getting a higher education can open the gates to many tremendous life changing opportunities such as becoming healthier, begin able to secure jobs, and earning more financially.
Poverty is a crippling situation which can stagnate the development of individuals. Insufficiency in a society can affect persons in more ways than one. Those experiencing a substandard way of living may not be able to obtain quality education which can cause a lack of sufficient employment. Lower paying jobs will more than likely not include quality health insurance for the employee.
An immigrant family wants the best for everyone lives, however moving to a new country brings struggles. There struggles include finding a home, a good paying job, avoiding to be deported, being separated ,and continuing their education. Immigrants expect a better life because their old home and country did have much benefits as the new country gives them. The advantage of an immigrant family is family values which tends them to be closer. Disadvantages of an immigrant family are the struggles that were first mentioned and including that they face other people calling them a threat.
Why do I want to attend college? College is an honorary achievement and it separates the determined from the undetermined. Owning a college to degree is an honor and an ecstatic feeling. Through college, that job is that much closer in the grasp. Through college, a person can perform at an elite level and really push themselves for greatness.
I agree with the points Busteed made; the traditional purpose of college is no longer sufficient in today’s economy. The job market is constantly evolving, and students need to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to navigate it. Summary In the article “What’s the Purpose of College?” (2019), Busteed argues that the purpose of college should be to provide individuals with the knowledge, skills, and experiences they need to be successful in their chosen careers and in life.
A college education is very important for me to obtain the career I want. College will provide me the knowledge and practice I need to be successful. Going to college will help me get accustomed to the pressure of the real world and will give me the opportunity to become independent. Graduating college is my number one goal in life. It would be an awarding payoff for all the hard work and dedication to my studies throughout high school.
