The Heroic Traits Of Odysseus In Homer's The Odyssey

On Island #3 in Homer’s The Odyssey, the epic hero trait that Odysseus displays is being clever. Odysseus and 12 of his men go into a cave on Kyklopes Island. The cave is owned by Polyphemus, the kyklopes. Odysseus and his men are trapped in the cave and Odysseus comes up with a very clever idea.

In the epic The Odyssey, the epic hero Odysseus shows many hero like traits, in my opinion the most important trait would be loyalty. Odysseus, the hero of The Odyssey, first shows the trait loyalty on the Land of the Lotus Eaters. Odysseus sends three of his best men to check out this island, but bad luck has them and they run into Lotus Eaters who are addicted to the Lotus Plant. The next they know is the three men become addicted also.

He had strong connections with the gods and also crazy strength. He was the strongest out of all of the heroes as if he almost had superhuman strength. (“Hercules”) Hercules was also an excellent warrior and a champion in wrestling and once wrestled his father Zeus to a draw. He was said to be so fierce that he could throw boulders around as if they were tiny stones and was said to be able to move mountains that got in the way of his cattle.

Even though he was old, his strength was still extraordinary. He was known to overpower his swords, which became useless to him. Odysseus’s determination throughout his adventures is a similar trait that I share and has brought us both success. Odysseus’ determination does not only help him throughout his journey, but also helps him be successful. While passing through Scylla and Charybdis, Odysseus tells the men to “Get the oar shafts in your hand, and lay back hard on your benches; hit these braking seas” (Homer 836).

On one hand, Odysseus possesses many admirable qualities that are typically associated with a hero, such as intelligence, courage, and leadership. On the other hand, he also has many flaws and makes many questionable decisions that call into question his heroism. One of the main arguments for Odysseus being a hero is his intelligence and cunning.

In “The Odyssey'' by Homer, an epic poem, the main character Odysseus travels with his men trying to return home. But, they run into many inconveniences. Throughout this journey, Odysseus shows bravery, loyalty, and intelligence. Which causes him to be considered an epic hero. One of Odysseus’s many heroic qualities is bravery.

Odysseus portrays those three heroic traits throughout his voyage home to Ithaca, which is why he is a hero. Odysseus is highly dedicated to his reputation and ego for the whole of his rocky and treacherous journey. From going up against a cyclops that is five times the size of him, to placing wax upon his crewmates’ ears to mute the singing of the Sirens, Odysseus is brave when he faces his fears and intelligent when he creates lifesaving tools from ship materials. A modern hero can be someone who saves a life or even sacrifices his or her own for someone else. Odysseus can be compared to a modern hero because he risks his own life to protect his crewmates.

One of the strongest mortals was Hercules. Hercules was stronger than most of the gods. Hercules was so strong he was the reason the Olympians won their battle with the Giants. Hercules was said to be Zeus’s last mortal son. Thebes, Greece was where Hercules was born.

In The Odyssey Homer makes Odysseus’ journey to his beloved Ithaca excruciating. Odysseus encounters many friends and foes throughout his journey and has to be a leader throughout his experiences. As an example, he encounters Polyphemus and Poseidon, both of whom make his journey mentally and physically painful. Odysseus faces countless scenarios in which he has to save multiple people in those situations. He also encounters the suitors, who are a group of men that try to marry Penelope, when he returns to reclaim his home.

The Odyssey by Homer is a book that involves the Journey of Odysseus and his men and the Obstacles they come across. The Odyssey portrays many themes including vengeance, hospitality, courage, bravery and more. Odysseus experiences some good and bad during his journey. He comes across people who help him, but also comes across creatures who hold him back. Odysseus is an Epic hero because of his quick thinking skills, bravery, and confidence for himself and his men.

Odysseus has some good traits, some bad flaws, and has been in some ugly situations, but overall he is a true hero. Some of the traits that exemplify his heroism traits are his cleverness, determination, and his bravery. In several scenarios he saves his men from sticky situations, showing his bravery, his determination

In the novel Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Hercules is the greatest hero of Greece. He was the hero that most Athenian people admired due to his actions. He was also the strongest man on earth and had the biggest pride. He would consider himself equal to a god due to his strength and other traits he possessed. Hercules strength was a beneficial trait throughout the novel, but at a point it became a horrendous trait he possessed.

Throughout the Odyssey, Odysseus is known through many names from the characters he encounters. For instance, he is known as “raider of cities” (561) implying that Odysseus’ reputation will be known toward other islands that he has blinded a Cyclops. This means that other people will know and they will beware of Odysseus. Odysseus’ idea of heroism is him spreading his name so people would be terrified of him. Odysseus also says he his is “Laertes’ son” (561) which is saying that he is the King of Ithaca and related to the god, Zeus.

In many mythological stories, heroes are described to be someone with great strength or someone who possess great intellect. These special characteristics help heroes achieve dangerous goals that require great strength and courage. Theseus stands out when compared to the other mythological heroes. He not only possess great strength, but he also intellect and compassion. By deciding to make everything equal in Athens, Theseus created a very prosperous city which stood out all throughout the world.
