The Indian Removal Act was to exchange unsettled lands west of the Mississippi for indian lands. The impact of the Indian Removal Act was that the people could claim indian lands and they moved the indians to unsettled lands west of the Mississippi. According to the book it says that the indians felt forced to sell their land and move west. The Cherokee Nation refused to move or sell their land to the United States government.

1) Vertical Integration is when a company controls every step of its business from the production of its own supplies to the distribution of its product which the company avoids a middlemen. On the other hand, Horizontal Combination is when one company buys competing companies in the same industry. 2) The Dawes Act divided the land of almost all tribes into small portions that were distributed to Indian families who would adopt habits of civilized life to become American citizens. This act, was actually named for Massachusetts Congressman Henry Dawes, who claimed that private property had the power to civilize, even the most basic brutes, and according to Dawes, the very act of being civilized, was to “wear civilized clothes, cultivate the ground, live in houses, ride in Studebaker wagons, send children to school, drink whiskey (and) own property.” Under the Dawes Act, the allotted persons would hold the land for 25 years; consequently, the land would then go to the individuals who had held that chunk of land or to their heirs, in which they would gain the title of American Citizen.

This act was to force the American Indians, who lived in communal way of life, to live Europeans style of individualism. It provided 160 acres of land for each family head and 80 acres to single persons over the age of eighteen (Reyhner and Eder,2006, p.81).

The Indian Removal Act empowered Jackson to enforceable evict all the Indian tribes living east of the Mississippi River. The five-civilized tribes were directly affected. The Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole, that had a population of around 60,000 living in North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi. The tribes did everything to become what a republican citizen should be. “The Cherokee had taken the lead, establishing schools, adopting written laws and a constitution modeled on that of the United States, and becoming successful farmers, many of whom owned slaves” (Foner 394).

The Indians did establish schools, develop written language and laws and even became sedentary farmers. Even though they had done all this to become a citizen they were still not recognized. They gave up hunting to adapt the European-American culture. The policy was designed to remove the Native Americans by the American government. The Indian Removal Act was not just created in the 1830’s but was culminated in the nineteenth century.

Our reasoning for supporting the Dawes Act was that if the land held by the native Americans was no longer affiliated by tribe, it could be privatized, which would offer us the opportunity of acquiring more land. Furthermore, a reduction of conflict between ourselves and the indians would greatly increase our quality of life, as the constant threat of raids had become a great nuisance.

When the Europeans began colonizing the New World, they had a problematic relationship with the Native Americans. The Europeans sought to control a land that the Natives inhabited all their lives. They came and decided to take whatever they wanted regardless of how it affected the Native Americans. They legislated several laws, such as the Indian Removal Act, to establish their authority. The Indian Removal Act had a negative impact on the Native Americans because they were driven away from their ancestral homes, forced to adopt a different lifestyle, and their journey westwards caused the deaths of many Native Americans.

Families, starving and homeless, look to their government for hope. The Great Depression has just hit America. The stock market climbed to a high and then crashed from all the unpaid loans and other services. People rush to the bank to pull all their money out of their account, but no one realized that the bank uses that money for government programs and not in a vault. People weren’t able to get their money, since so many had people had withdrawn their money cleaning out the banks.

The Dawes act nullified previous land allotments forced upon the Native Americans by the federal government. This new act insured that the allotted land, that the Native Americans were forced to live on and rebuild their lives, will now be given to white settlers. I don’t think this act is fair or just. It’s other process that is trying to get rid of the Native American culture and lifestyle. They’re separating big parts of the region, and making them relocate to a smaller area.
