Night written by Elie Wiesel is a memoir about Elie’s personal experience during the Holocaust. Yes, this book is very hard to read and has violent and upsetting content, but it is the truth about the Holocaust. Banning books is wrong and limits students to things that adults find “appropriate” for students. Some students can handle for mature material, so limiting them to certain books is unjust. Banning books in school libraries takes away academic freedom, shelters students from the outside world, and does not let students form an educated opinion. When school libraries ban books students are left with books about only positive things and an unrealistic picture of the world. If a book like To Kill a Mockingbird is banned students lack the intelligence about such topics taught in the book. To Kill a Mockingbird teaches about bravery, the real world, treating others with respect, and many other things. If a student is never exposed to this he or she will not know about racism or other unfair and unjust things in the world. If students are “protected” from real world situations they will not succeed in life. If someone has an unrealistic expectation of the world they will not know how to handle hard situations that come their way. Schools should educate their students about the world not “protect” them from it. It is not only am educators job to teach academics it is also their job to prepare their students for their life ahead of them. In conclusion this shows that banning books shelters students from the outside …show more content…
Spring Lake High School’s librarian, Mrs. Draeger, says, “Spring Lake Schools has balanced material and a wide variety of information with true facts so that students can form their own educated opinion.” This statement is very important because if a student is only ever given one side of the story how are they going to form an opinion. Many school libraries ban books about religion, gender identity, politics, and other controversial topics because they are afraid student will then go and do the things that happen in the books. Spring Lake Public School stated on July Twenty-First, nineteen ninety seven that,“Media centers do not advocate the ideas found in their collections. The presence of a magazine or book in a media center does not indicate an endorsement of its content by the media center.”Most people love to read books that they can relate with. If a student is being abused and reads a book about abuse they know that they are not alone. “To provide materials which reflect the ideas and beliefs of religious, social, political, historical, and ethnic groups and their contribution to the American and world heritage and culture, thereby enabling students to develop an intellectual integrity in forming judgement”(Spring Lake Public Schools July 21, 1997). This shows that students at Spring Lake have the opportunity to read about both sides of the issue and form an opinion
and i used three different texts below from the articles I got. Then, I decided to use these three texts from each of the articles because two of them mostly talked about decisions people came up during the 1950s and now with to decide whether they should ban books depending on their views of what’s right or wrong. This text tells us that there is no point in banning books because many kids these days are aware of sex, gender, violence etc. However the Keller high school is considering banning these types of books with sexual, violence or anything that could be inappropriate for the school district.
United States of America, a country that is known for its striving democracy and its amendment towards “freedom of speech”, made an unlawful decision by allowing many public places like libraries and schools to apply censorship and ban books. Literature and any other type of writing are all types of freedom of speech because it allows each author to express themselves and their message through their work. With the authority of censorship and banning of books in a democracy like the United States causes a danger to us because we would not have the ability to obtain certain knowledge that might help us in a significant way. Additionally, I think we would be affected if we did not read any of the short stories we read in class, for example, “Battle Royal” by Ralph Ellison. If we had not read “Battle Royal, we would never have the chance to unscramble and understand his symbolism in his
I am writing to strongly argue against the banning of the book "Night" by Elie Wiesel from the high school curriculum. This book is a powerful and important work of literature that provides invaluable insights into one of the darkest periods in human history, and banning it from the curriculum would be a grave disservice to the students. "Night" is a memoir that tells the story of Elie Wiesel's experiences as a Jewish teenager during the Holocaust. It describes the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps and the profound loss and suffering that he and his fellow prisoners endured. While the book is undeniably difficult and disturbing to read, it is also a profoundly moving and insightful work that forces us to confront the worst aspects of humanity
Books can create portals to different life experiences and encourage reading. A few schools and libraries have challenged the educational value of some books, however, therefore leading them to eventually be prohibited in a particular place. Each reason may be different depending on the book and the location of the exclusions. Books are icons of literature and their value should outshine the occasionally offensive topic. Be that as it may, there are multiple reasons why books should be taught and included in a curriculum.
Books are an essential way to gain knowledge whether they are controversial or not. Thousands of books have been banned from public libraries and schools due to being deemed ‘inappropriate’ by parents, administrators, or religious leaders. Whether Americans should ban books in public libraries and schools is an often debated topic. This censorship of books is dangerous, as it restricts the American people's’ ability to access information, leaving Americans ignorant. Historically, banning books is not a new practice.
At one point in time, over 7,220 books have been challenged to be banned. Though these books have been removed for the safety of children, not all books should be banned for many reasons. These include the fact that banning books is infringing on the First Amendment, keeping children from understanding the real world, and, even though there are many reasons for book banning, not banning books could help a student’s education and can even work against itself. Banning a book from a school or public library could go against a person’s First Amendment of the freedom of press.
Censorship Censorship in schools may not be the best choice for enriching the future minds of the United States of America. Children of the United States of America should have the right to learn about anything for it is there amended right. Taking knowledge away from them and censoring it should not be the answer to keeping our Children pure it should be what we teach our kids. We need to teach them right and wrong that is what will keep our child’s mind pure. Many books are being taken off shelves every day in student libraries because a couple people do not think that the book is suitable for children.
Elie Wiesel’s Night should not be banned from the book list for ninth grade because it is a book that teaches very important lessons despite the fact that it contains violent scenes. The book shows that we should treat people in a good way even if they are not like us. It reveals the horrible consequences of inhumanity, the meaningless suffering and unbearable pain of innocent people. These reasons show that the book is very important for the grown-ups because it deals with fundamental questions about humanity and moral values.
Either way those are all to teach us something. When you ban and censor books inside those books are the fears you hold and that you don’t want to see. It is because of that reason why today there are so many social problems in our world. Not banning books wouldn’t solve all the social problems in the world but it would take us into the right direction. Keep people from the truth of banned books is the same as lying to them.
First, this text states, “Children should not be exposed to sex, violence, drug use, or other inappropriate topics” (Procon.org). To explain, parents are banning books from schools because they do not want their children to be exposed to these inappropriate topics. Moreover, banning these inappropriate topic books would be a great deal for parents and their children. Furthermore, the same text states that “Keeping books with an inappropriate content out of libraries protects kids, but does not stop people from
“American citizens who care about the improvement of education are urged to join students, teachers, librarians, administrators, boards of education, and professional and scholarly organizations in support of the students’ right to read” (The Students Right to Read). Citizens should be allowed to stand up if they believe books should not be banned. It is important that writers should be able to have their books out to the public without getting banned. “Challengers often employ a definition that maintains that banning materials is the only true form of censorship,”(Knox 740). Censorship of books is common and a real problem.
It is evident that censorship is widely common in school. Some books are banned from school libraries due to content, while others are banned from being read in English classes. "Censorship is particularly harmful in the schools because it prevents students with inquiring minds from exploring the world, seeking truth and reason, and stretching their intellectual capacities, and becoming
[21]” (ProCon.org). Banning books in school can create a problem for the teachers that are trying to assign something to the class. With the new addition to the first amendment schools will have the rights to any books. When books are banned the life lessons in the books are also
In order to allow school boards to ban books from schools, the Supreme Court must first undergo judicial review of the first amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and the American people must vote on whether they will allow book banning in public schools. Only 46% percent of people today in America are in favor of banning “books with dangerous ideas” from public school libraries (Source C). This number has been continuously decreasing since 1999. No longer do a majority of Americans support this. However, this result stems
