"I believe that the work [Planned Parenthood is] doing in taking back control of our individual bodies, of declaring reproductive freedom to be a fundamental human right, is at least as important as freedom of speech or freedom of assembly." -Gloria Steinem
For over 100 years Planned Parenthood has been a vital aspect of health care for the American population. Contraception given, implanted, and educated about is a main service provided by Planned Parenthood. Although oblivious to many people, Planned Parenthood provides a large amount of services for both men and women. When Planned Parenthood is mentioned, most people immediately think of abortion, however, abortion only takes up 3% of all healthcare provided by the nonprofit organization.

Government Accountability Office, Contraception took up 34% of all services provided by Planned Parenthood in 2015. Besides abstinence and outercorse which is the avoidance of semen and the vagina coming in contact whatsoever, the top four most effective forms are Tubal Ligation, Vasectomies, Intrauterine Device, and Nexplanon, or "The Implant", which are all 99% effective and do not prevent sexually transmitted diseases or infections.
Tubal Ligation is a surgical procedure done on women that permanently closes the fallopian tubes. Similarly, men can have vasectomies done which permanently block off the tubes that lead semen out of the body.
An intrauterine device, or IUD, is a small T-shaped object that goes into the uterus. In the United States there are five brands used: ParaGard, Mirena, Kyleena,
Liletta, and Skyla. ParaGard is the only one of the five to have copper incorporated into the device and lasts the longest,12 years. Copper repels sperm which makes it nearly impossible for fertilization. The other four use the hormone progestin. Progestin causes two things, the thickening of mucus on the cervix, and the stopping of ovulation. Mirena works up to 6 years, Kyleena for 5, Liletta for 4, and Skyla for

It is virtually the same thing as a male condom, except it is only 79% effective.
The withdrawal, or "pull out" method is removing the penis from the vagina before ejaculation, preventing the semen and vagina from coming in contact. While this is surprisingly 78% effective, it is recommended to be done in addition to a condom or other birth control method.

Through Planned Parenthood, they are able to come and receive STI testing at affordable prices and if needed, treatment. A perfect example is when a sexually active female college student feels as if she’s at risk for a STI, she is able to get tested at Planned Parenthood and receive treatment. College students are unable to afford healthcare so Planned Parenthood provides them with a clinic that they are able to afford and receive the care they need. Through the organization, they are also able to become further educated on safe sex and will take the necessary precautions in the future. College students will also see Planed Parenthood as a place where they can get their questions about sex
It is vital that Congress change course so that these, as well as similar programs, be expanded. In particular, we need to protect federal funding for Planned Parenthood, which provides important preventive services for women such as mammograms and conception. In Maryland, more than 40,000 people rely on Planned Parenthood for health care every year and thousands of Maryland students receive an accurate and complete education about reproductive health from Planned Parenthood educators.4 The recent attacks on Planned Parenthood show just how far some will go to prevent women from taking control of their health and well-being. In Congress, I will fight against Republican efforts to defund Planned Parenthood, and I will never let the government come between a woman and her doctor.
In America and The Pill: A History of Promise, Peril, and Liberation, Elaine May Tyler examined the history of birth control in the United States. May traced the pill's conception and evolution the United States through to the twenty-first century. The book consisted of an introduction, seven chapters, and a conclusion. May approached the topic in the context of influence of suffragist and reformer Margaret Sanger's advocacy originating in the late Progressive Era and Cold War American ideology, through to the emerging movements of the sexual revolution and the feminist movement, including acknowledging political, religious, racial, socio-economic, and gender bias factors.
When Birth Control first hit the market in the 1960’s, it took off in a way no one expected, not even the doctors. In the book, “America and the Pill”, Elaine Tyler May focuses on the revolution of birth control and the effects it’s had on society. One of May’s main arguments were that “the pill” gave women new power they didn’t have before. This new invention paved the way for women’s right’s in the United States.
The first article presented only the author’s point of view and refused to say the words “birth-control” or even “contraceptives.” Sadly, it only focused on how “evil” the people were who were sending out the literature, not how these women, many of whom were likely married, simply did not want any more children and needed medication and information on how to prevent pregnancy. The second article, however, addressed the issue with a more factual approach. It seemed to accept the idea that women have the right to birth control and sex education, even if the author only discussed married people. These articles are evidence of how, in one hundred years, the nation can change its entire stance on an issue.
What I would like for people to realize is that Planned Parenthood is more that meets they eye. They are more than people give them credit for, and they are more than an abortion clinic. The services they provide range anywhere from sexual education and contraception education to helping with gender identity and sexual orientation, or from reproductive services to cancer screenings and STI testing and treatment. They services they provide are endless, and all equally important. As someone who has struggled with their sexual orientation and with self acceptance, if I had known that Planned Parenthood provided services such as these, I would have taken advantage of them and gotten the guidance that I needed.
Why Planned Parenthood Should not be Defunded by the Government “Trying to block women from getting access to contraception or defunding Planned Parenthood is completely nonsensical from a policy standpoint.” - Richard Carmona, american physician and nurse. This is exactly why Planned Parenthood should not be defunded. It offers many things from contraception, abortion, cancer screenings and preventions along with much more. Also, if they were to be defunded and abortions could no longer go on, many more unplanned pregnancies would happen and the cost of welfare would escalate a lot.
Planned Parent Hood Funding Planned Parent Hood is funded by multiple different ways, by donations, money that they profit off from there services and federal tax dollars. There has always been an argument between are politicians rather there should be a cut in government funding towards Planned Parenthood and many Americans would argue the fact that rather their tax payer money should or shouldn’t fund Planned Parent, personally I think it should be founded by federal tax dollars. But, what really is Planned Parenthood, and what are American tax payers’ money paying for?
Planned Parenthood is a topic that is continuously discussed in correlation with the concept of money as many believe that it “...emphasizes abortions instead of preventative care” (Attira). Because of birthrights, abortions, and the controversy that surrounds such issues, many individuals believe that the government should not be responsible for providing funding. Therefore, actually defunding Planned Parenthood is often brought up as a solution to the highly-debated consensus of government-funded healthcare services. Although many believe that creating a barrier between opinion and action is a positive push, actually defunding the program would be more catastrophic than perceived. Defunding Planned Parenthood would mean blocking and preventing individuals from receiving the health care that they are reliant on.
Planned Parenthood is a National issue fighting for abortion access, giving women facing an unintended pregnancy must have access to safe, legal abortion services. Birth control and the fact all people deserve access to birth control and other preventive care, health care equality and the idea all people should have equal access to reproductive health care. For years politicians in Congress and statehouses across the country have attacked Planned Parenthood’s patients’ access to care. But I believe Planned Parenthood’s health centers provide high quality, affordable reproductive health care, to 2.4 million people across the country. When politicians talk about defunding Planned Parenthood, they really mean depriving patients who depend on public
I hope this project helps me understand the deeper impact of Planned Parenthood and its effects in different communities. During my high school experience,
Flippen 1 Shaunice Flippen Planned Parenthood is considered a public interest group, which are citizen activist groups that try to represent what they deem to be the interest of the public at large. The most recent controversy in the news today is the proposal by the Republican Party to defund Planned Parenthood for one year, which is expected to fail, which could shut down the government. President Obama and Senate Democrats are willing to shut down the federal government to ensure that tax dollars keep flowing to the Planned Parenthood organization, one of their biggest political allies and financial contributor of millions of dollars to the Democratic Presidential campaign and Party. The taking of life, the extermination of a sack of cells: abortions, no matter what you side on when you hear “Planned Parenthood,” you think abortions. There's a wide misconception that Planned Parenthood does mostly abortion services; and with the Pro choice/ Pro life people debating on defunding them or not this is why we shouldn't defund pph. 3% of Planned Parenthood services are abortions, Contrary to popular myth. The other 97% is for other health related services. Such as Ob/Gyn visits, birth control, mammograms, STD tests, health education programs, diabetes and anemia screenings, physical exams and much more.
Planned Parenthood is a program that has been helping people pay for essential procedures without a large fee. It should continue to be covered by the government because of the immense help it has offered people for years. As well as the cost is being funded by Title X which is helping other healthcare organizations across the United States. Planned Parenthood, as well as a negative misconception, is that they only help with abortions. Planned Parenthood helps with anything like educating people about their health.
In 1980, only three and a half decades ago, Paraguard was developed, and oral contraceptives began being made with low doses of hormones to increase their efficiency (“A Brief History of Birth Control in the U.S.-Our Bodies Ourselves”). Over the past several decades, birth control has evolved and made many women’s lives easier, but the ability to obtain contraceptives was not always so
