The good choices that Justice Wargrave made weren’t necessarily good choices, but deserved choices. The killing of Philip Lombard by Justice Wargrave was one of the more deserved killings that occurred in the book. "Philip Lombard, that upon a date in February, 1932, you were guilty of the death of twenty-one men, members of an East African tribe" (31). Mr. Lombard willingly sent 21 natives to their deaths. While this may sound bad, perhaps the more concerning thing is that he wasn’t ashamed that he did so. Next, was the killing of Vera Claythorne who was in search of riches out of the death that she caused. "Vera Elizabeth Claythorne, that on the 11th day of August, 1935, you killed Cyril Ogilvie Hamilton" (31). Vera orchestrated Cyril’s death and pretended to save him from drowning. Once Cyril died, Hugo would inherit Cyril’s …show more content…
The killing of Emily Brent was a very questionable killing by Mr. Wargrave. "Emily Caroline Brent, that upon the 5th of November, 1931, you were responsible for the death of Beatrice Taylor" (30). Emily Brent dismissed her maid as punishment for becoming pregnant. Beatrice then killed herself because she was unable to support the newborn. Simply because Emily Brent fired her maid and her maid ended up committing suicide doesn’t mean that Miss Brent deserves to die. Also, Mr. Wargrave made the poor choice of being the one to decide whether or not people die. He felt like he was the one the only one to judge each person, and then kill them because of their “guilty verdict”. “And therefore another kind of soldier. The Unknown Soldier! X! Mr. Owen! U.N. Owen! One Unknown Lunatic at Large!” (79). Justice Wargrave (Mr. Owen) was crazy enough, as stated by many of the members on the island, to believe that he deserved to pick whether or not people died, and how they died, along with when they died. He thought he was
On 2nd August 1994, 13 year old American boy Eric Smith was charged with the murder of a 4 year old boy called Derrick Robbie in Savona. Derrick Robbie was walking alone to a summer camp just down the road from where he lived, when Smith saw him and lured him off the path and into a small patch of woods on the way to the camp (Leung, 2004). It was there where Smith went on to strangle Derrick Robbie and unearthed some rocks nearby which he used to beat him to death. After this Smith sodomised the 4 year old with a stick he’d found and left him there to be found (Staas, 2014). A couple of days after the body was found by the police Smith went to the police station to see if he could help with the crime, Smith denied seeing Derrick Robbie at
James Rackover was led out in cuffs from New York 's 13th Precinct, center, after being charged with the murder of Joseph Comunale, left, 26, over the weekend. Lawrence Dilione of Oceanport, New Jersey, top right, has also been charged with his murder. Rackover and Lawrence Dilione are facing charges of second-degree murder, tampering and hindering prosecution charges after they allegedly stabbed Comunale 15 times and then tried to burn his body with gasoline on Sunday. The body of Comunale, who goes by the name Joey, was discovered in a wooded stretch on the Jersey shore early Wednesday. His partially-burned remains were found inside a suitcase that had been buried behind Foggia 's Florist in the town of Oceanport.
Mr. Giles Corey, one of the most upstanding members of our community, has been allegedly accused of withholding information from the official courts. He “...has six hundred acres, and timber in addition….” (Miller 1316). Mr. Giles Corey is over an astounding eighty years of age and in no condition whatsoever to be held in the jailhouse. His third wife in this lifetime, Goody Martha Corey, has been accused as a witch.
The pursuit for justice is an essential theme that is illustrated in the Western films High Noon and The Ox-Bow Incident. In the film High Noon, Will Kane stands alone as he faces the bandit Frank Miller, who returns to town in order to kill Kane and get justice and revenge for his imprisonment. In addition, Will Kane is a character that represents justice as he is a marshal who protects the town. On the other hand, in the film The Ox-Bow Incident, justice is pursued after hearing that Larry Kinkaid was killed which thereby resulted in the hanging of three innocent individuals. Moreover, while on the quest for justice both these films encounter a struggle with making life and death decisions.
Sometimes killing people could be for a good reason. Rainsford slaughtered General Zaroff because of self-defense. This short story demonstrates that Rainsford killed General Zaroff for either self-defense or murder; however, it strongly relates to self-defense. Sometimes people have to protect themselves and others protect them from everyone
No one deserves to die, and no one deserves death. Some executions are justified, but David Herold’s was not. Herold was a skilled and talented man who was deprived into a corner to help a killer. James L. Swanson’s novel, Chasing Lincoln 's Killer, a diary entry, “Last Diary Entry of John Wilkes Booth,” and an article, “Lincoln Writ of Liberty” contain evidence that proves Herold’s innocence. Herold did help a murderer; however, he is like everyone, in that he is susceptible to violent threats.
The play The Tragedy of King Richard III by WIlliam Shakespeare explores the idea of retributive justice, the idea that criminals should be punished as opposed to rehabilitated, through Richard and his victims. Due to retributive justice, all of Richard’s victims receive precisely what they deserve, as Richard had the full consent of each of his victims the entire time he was manipulating and controlling them. An obvious example of this then, is Anne. She willingly went along with Richard’s plans for her own selfish reason, only later to be killed off when she outlived her purpose to Richard. An infinitesimal instance embodies itself through Hastings.
In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” Rainsford was justified in killing General Zaroff. Rainsford is a hunter who fell off a boat in the middle of no where. As he gets to land he runs into several obstacle courses, then gets to this big house and meets General Zaroff. General Zaroff also hunts, just not animals. He hunts something more dangerous such as humans who boats crashed like Rainsford.
On March 1, 1932, in the Lindbergh’s peaceful home in Hopewell, the son of world-famous aviator Charles Lindbergh Sr. was snatched from his nursery and was later found dead. Charles Lindbergh Jr.’s kidnapping and murder shocked the entire nation, and remains unsolved to this day. After having analyzed many sources, it is evident that Bruno Richard Hauptmann and John Knoll are responsible for the kidnapping and murder of baby Charles Lindbergh Jr., because Hauptmann had a history of using ladders in his past crimes, there are many pieces of evidence proving that two people committed the crime, and there is also a lot of proof to show that John knoll was involved as well. First of all, Hauptmann had a history of using ladders to commit crimes, and a rung of wood in the ladder used it the kidnapping matched the wood in his attic. In the PBS Nova Video, “Who Killed the Lindbergh Baby?”, it states, “He [Hauptmann] did use a ladder to climb into the second story window of the mayor's house and stole some money and watches… history of using ladders to commit crimes.”
I do believe that Lieutenant Cross is responsible for Lavender 's death. Lieutenant Cross was a leader and being a leader comes with a lot of responsibilities. His first priority should have been to protect his men, but he was too hung up on Martha. I understand that they are at war which is very stressful. The thought of death being so near and the thought of never seeing their loved ones must be terrifying .
In In Cold Blood, the issue over the death penalty is prominent. Did Perry and Dick deserve to die? Should the severity of one’s crime determine one’s fate? Although Truman Capote writes the novel in a straightforward, “from a distance” way, he conveys, through his characters, theme, and plot development, that the death penalty is an issue that should be looked at from all sides and that the legal system itself is the real issue at hand, and that the death penalty is used as a means to suppress the distress and indignation of the citizens surrounding the case, instead of suppressing the victim himself.
In 1917, a woman named Elizabeth Huntley decapitated her own daughter. When her case was brought to trial, doctors and professionals wrote it off as depression. Friends and family described that Huntley was a joyful woman until the air raids happened in London. She had nervous breakdowns during the air raids and even more so when her children screamed and cried. Before her doctor got her out of London and away from her children, she had already murdered her child.
Crime and Punishment in the Medieval Period The Middle Ages or Medieval Period lasted from 476 CE to the 1453 CE. It began with the fall of the Roman Empire and merged into the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery. The Middle Ages is divided into three main periods, the Dark Ages, the High Middle Ages and the Late Middle Ages. To a significant extent the nature of crime and punishment, it was very different between social classes during the Medieval Period. This can be seen through the significant groups that were involved in medieval crime and punishment, the effects of a person’s social class on crime and punishment and the punishments given out to different social classes between the Medieval Period and today.
In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, John Proctor is accused of performing witchcraft and contracting with the Devil. He is faced with the decision to either confess to or deny the accusations. Ultimately, Proctor chooses to deny the accusations and dies a martyr. Proctor’s decision to sacrifice himself is justified because he protected the reputation of those who died and risked being arrested to save his wife, Elizabeth Proctor. John Proctor’s death is justified because he was willing to sacrifice his life to protect the reputation of others.
She is mentally disturbed, and driven to her act by insanity. Miss Emily kills her victim, Barron, to keep him around because she truly loves him and she does not want to let go. Both protagonists have a distorted perception of
