There are three types of conflict present in the lives of all people. Struggles are necessary in real and fictional narratives to advance the storyline and to help one reach their goals. These obstacles are particularly abundant in action stories. A classic adventure story, Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” demonstrates the aforementioned three types of conflicts, man versus nature, man versus man, and man versus self. Conflict between man and nature is exhibited in the short story “The Most Dangerous Game”. One example is when Rainsford, a hunter sailing to Brazil, stays out on the boat deck at night to smoke. Hearing gunshots, Rainford balances himself on a boat rail to inspect the situation. In the process of mounting the rail, his pipe hits a rope and falls, sending him after it. “He lunged for it… he had reached too far and had lost his balance… the blood warm waters of the Caribbean sea closed over his head”(9). In this situation, Rainsford struggles with the natural force of gravity causing both him and his pipe to fall into the sea. In addition, there is also conflict between Rainsford and the ocean, as the water prevents him from getting …show more content…
The protagonist, Rainsford, struggles with nature when he falls into the ocean, himself when he must make a decision between being hunted and being tortured, and another man when he murders the malicious General Zaroff at the end of the story. It is inevitable to face conflicts in one’s life, though they may not be as dramatic as the problems that Rainsford deals with. One is constantly exposed to opinions different from their own, weather interfering with one’s plans, and decisions, big and small, which determine what kind of person one is. However, in stories like this, as well as in the real world, conflict is essential to propelling people to reach their
To convey the theme of competition can enhance a person’s character, Richard Connell has Rainsford succeed at the Most Dangerous Game. Rainsford shows through the big hunt growth because he knows strategies and ways to win the big hunt. The frightening event is when he has to build his traps to stay away from the General. ‘’The Most Dangerous Game’’ is a short story in which one man enjoy hunting humans, the other enjoys hunting for animals, these two men battle it out on an mysterious island. Although the two both enjoy hunting, both of these characters General Zaroff and Sanger Rainsford differ from each other in countless ways. The distinction between the two are evident. In ‘’The Most Dangerous Game’’ General Zaroff is cruel and unwitty, Zaroff finds killing innocent humans that wash up on shore--enjoyable. Rainsford wouldn’t kill innocent human beings, nor would Rainsford find joy in doing it.
When Rainsford refuses to hunt with Zaroff, Rainsford has to be hunted. Richard Connell uses mood/tone in his story “The Most Dangerous Game” to convey the theme of competition rarely enhances a person’s character. The author of “The Most Dangerous Game” is Richard Connell. The thesis is Competition rarely enhances a person 's character. I think being hunted changes rainsford for the better because he had to think like the animal and he got a feel of how the animal felt while being hunted.
Everyday people make decisions, some are made during life or death situations. Not everyone has to go to through a circumstance that is life or death, but some people do. Richard Connell once composed a fictional short story about a life or death situation. In Richard Connell’s short story “The Most Dangerous Game” large game hunter Sanger Rainsford is tested in the following ways: strong versus the weak, the value of life, and becoming what he fears. Nevertheless he made it through these challenges, but he also learned a few life lessons while doing so.
Rainsford faces many conflicts along his journey on the island, such and man v.s nature, man v.s. himself, and man v.s man. He has to overcome all of this in order to keep calm, and survive. One of the conflict in “The Most Dangerous Game”, was man v.s. nature. This conflict presented itself at the beginning of the story, when Rainsford fell into the water.
In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” the main character Rainsford had gotten stranded on a dangerous island where Zaroff, a Russian Cossack General, hunted humans for sport. He feels that God put the weak on earth to give the strong pleasure, and up until it was his turn to be hunted, so did Rainsford. Earlier in the story Rainsford had stated, “The world is made up of two classes-- the hunters and the huntees.” And as harsh as it may sound, it is technically correct. The world is made of hunters and huntees, predator and prey.
Conflict is very important to a story it makes it interesting, some stories have one conflict some have more than one. A great example of multiple conflicts in a story is in “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell man versus man is the most relevant conflict. Man versus nature is the first conflict seen in the story. Man versus himself is a conflict between Rainsford, the story's protagonist, and himself throughout the short story. In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, there is man versus man, man versus nature and man versus himself.

This is both his external conflict and an unexpected turn of events. Eventually, although this was tough for him, Rainsford ends up winning the game. When informed that he had won Rainsford responded: “I am still a beast at bay; he
The Most Dangerous Game Conflicts All stories have to have a conflict, the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell has three important conflicts. Man against man, man against nature, man against himself are the three main conflicts that take place. For man against man Rainsford and General Zaroff are fighting each other in the hunting ‘game’. For man against nature Rainsford is fighting the sea once he hears the gunshots and is trying to get out of the water.
Throughout the story the reader sees how Zaroff “plays” with Rainsford as he hunts him and not once does Zaroff think he will lose to Rainsford. This is a clear example of the theme to never underestimate your opponent skills or the underdog may overtake you. Connell illustrates this theme through foreshadowing, irony, and, man vs. man. To help us visualize, foreshadowing shows how Rainsford, being the underdog, will overtake Zaroff who underestimates Rainsford. Although Rainsford is not seen as being the weaker link, Rainsford showed he did not pity those below him: “‘Who cares how a jaguar feels all they understand is fear.’
In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game,” Sanger Rainsford is forced to test his survival skills while he is intensely hunted by an experienced war general named General Zaroff. In this story, Rainsford exhibits some very helpful characteristics like his resourcefulness, his strategic planning, and his ability to reason. As a result of Rainsford’s questioning the validity of General Zaroff’s hunting methods, he ended up playing in the game. Although I believe Rainsford is a very helpful, interesting, and dynamic character, at the end of the story, he must give up his own personal morals to win the game.
In “The most dangerous game” written by, Richard Connell, he uses many devices such as: characterization, plot structure and theme to contribute to the overall meaning of the story. Characterization is a big part of the overall meaning of the story which is that survival is of those who are smart, cunning, and can adapt to their environment. The protagonist Rainsford is at a constant battle with the antagonist General Zaroff. Throughout the entire short story they both have similar minds sets and then farther along the main character 's mind set develops into something more. The reader can almost sense a self centeredness, and that he believes that there are only two type of people in this world, “the hunters and the huntees”, and he believes that he is the hunter.
Conflict is the essence of any literary fiction. The main goal of an author is to tell a story that keeps the reader interested. At the story’s core, conflict is the momentum of happening and change and is crucial on all levels for delivering information and building characterization as well as building the story itself. Conflict is the source of change that engages a reader and keeps them interested. In a story, conflict and action does what description and telling of feelings and situations do not.
"The Most Dangerous Game" statement of The world is made up of two classes -- "the hunters and the huntees" is a great statement that makes sense. The Most Dangerous Game is about a man named Zaroff who lives on an island by himself. The people that come to the island get trained to get ready for the game. The game involves people going through the jungle, hiding from Zaroff as he hunts them. Both the hunters and the huntees have a different view on the conflict.
