In Leo R. Chavez’s ethnography, The Latino Threat: Constructing Immigrants, Citizens, and the Nation, the claimed problem of Latino immigration, specifically Mexicans, is tackled using interviews, statistics, and other works of literature. Chavez’s ethnography not only discusses Latino immigration but Latino invasion, integration, organ transplants and even Latina fertilization. One of Chavez’s big topics is on how the media influences the public to believe that Latinos are planning an invasion or take-over in order to gain the land that was originally Mexico’s. The topic of Latina reproduction and fertilization comes up multiple times through Chavez’s ethnography. Another main topic that plays a part in Chavez’s argument is the Latino role in public marches and the citizenship aspect of their actions.

Within the latino culture, the older generations take it upon themselves to guide and advise the younger generations. They do so by either sharing an anecdote and adding analytical notes or simply by telling you what to do. These concepts are represented through the short stories “Junito,” by Luis Negron and “How to Date a Browngirl” by Junot Diaz. In both of these pieces, the narrator gives advice to a young latino male, however, through the use of both first person and second person narrative and explicit diction, Negron’s piece was more realistic while Diaz’s piece is more on the side of satire due to the use of only second person narrative and hints of sarcasm.

After reading the story “The Myth of the Latin Woman”, I was not astonished that people still to this day carry the mindset of racial stereotyping. Even though that no matter how much a person tries to cast away from their culture to avoid being labeled, they would still be judged from what the world portrays them as. However, even to this day I am and will forever be a victim of being labeled due to the color of my skin. I myself as well as others in this society am guilty of stereotyping Latino women due to what we see in movies. There was a time when I came across a young Latino female, it was when I was hanging out with a group of friends after school.

One of the area of conflict that rose in the book involves the usage of the English language in relation of the family’s native language, Spanish. As a Mexican-American raised in the States the exhibition of the English language, whether the use of the tongue is fluent or not, cause a strain in the Mexican culture as the culture takes in consideration of their romance and richness of history in their native tongue (Rothman 204). Stereotypes are hazy generalizations influenced by a number of sources such as, past experiences, media, friends and family.
