The Navajo Code Talkers and Their Everlasting Legacy Throughout recent United States history (post civil-war), discussion of Native American struggles and triumphs has lessened greatly. This is primarily due to the decline in wars and conflict between the government and tribal groups. Although this sort of activity has declined, Native American groups have impacted United States history on many occasions during this time period. One of events that is particularly interesting to research is the Navajo Code Talkers intervention of World War II. Essentially, the Navajo people were utilized by the United States government during the second world war in order to disguise their military codes through another language.
According to the legend, the first people of the Fifth World were given four lights but were dissatisfied with the amount of light they had on Earth. After many endeavors to slake the people, the First Woman engendered the sun to bring warmth and light to the land, and the moon to provide coolness and moisture. These were crafted from quartz, and, when there were bits of quartz that were left behind by the carving, they were tossed into the firmament to make stars. Like the Navajo, the Hopi believe there were worlds afore this one. The modern era is believed to be the Fourth World, and each world that came afore this one ended with the appearance of “the blue star.”
Vicente Quintana Ms. Herrera English 3 18 September 2016 Native American Mythology Native mythology are stories about humans, animals and deities that try to explain the origins and values of a given culture. Some examples of native mythology stories are: The Navajo Origin Legend, When Grizzlies Walked Upright, and The Earth on Turtle’s Back. Each of these myths have their own details and certain ways on how the creations went, but they all have similar beliefs and customs. The Navajo Origin Legend is about a ceremony that created the first humans by the power of wind. The people believed that the wind was the god because it is what brought us to life and is what keeps us alive since we breathe out air until we pass away.
Some of these groups escaped from their mother land due to wars, servitude and over populated societies that resulted in less food and work. They were also looking for religious freedom and social climate differences.
The Navajo and the Modoc: Mythological comparison In the myths “When Grizzlies Walked Upright” and “The Navajo Origin Legend”, we get a glimpse of the beliefs of traditional Native American societies. The former myth is one told by the Modoc tribe of Oregon, the other is told by the Navajo tribe of the American Southwest. The different uses of animals, spirits, and women’s roles help create an illustration of society before colonization. These myths do also differ on these themes and on how they are presented.
Jenna Dela Cruz Jane Doe English IV 30 March 2023 They Walk on All Fours The term Skinwalker will send a cold chill down the spine of anyone familiar with this evil cryptid. The dark magic associated with the Skinwalker is so feared that members of the Navajo Nation will not speak of the creatures. To speak of a Skinwalker is considered taboo because it opens you up to becoming a victim of the Skinwalker. It is believed that the Skinwalker possesses the ability to enchant someone’s mind for the purpose of committing evil deeds.
GGrowing up on the Navajo Nation is an experience, compared to residing in a city. I grew up in Tuba City, an hour north of Flagstaff, AZ. Tuba City, a town with a population a little over 8,500, several restaurants, one grocery store, two high schools, and two stoplights. On the other hand, the town is growing.

The differences between light and dark, good and bad, are blurred in the Iroquois Creation Story. The narrator captured two different views in this story, blurring the line between what is considered right and wrong. The Iroquois Creation Story does not have just the black and white, but also the gray areas as well. It makes readers question what is really good and what is bad. The overall use of light elements gives the story a light feel, but also has a dark undertone when looked at closely.
