The upbringing of a child contains many factors, many of which correlate to where a child grows up. The people, culture, and experiences of someone’s childhood are the greatest determining factor for what kind of person they will become. So how does the nature and nurture of one’s upbringing impact the decisions that they make, and their life in general? Author Wes Moore explores this question in his memoir, The Other Wes Moore, as it relates to two lives in particular. Moore main purpose in this book is to explore the overarching impact that a collection of expectations and decisions, not always one’s own, can have on someone’s life. The Other Wes Moore chronicles the author’s life in comparison to another man, also from Baltimore, whose …show more content…
Moore exhibits how, “… few lives hinge on any single moment or decision or circumstance,” and that there was not defining difference between him and the incarcerated man who shares his name (182). The main difference between him and the other Wes Moore is the collection of family, culture, and experience that Moore had in his upbringing. His mother and grandparents, by providing structure and the opportunity to go to private and military school, “… made it clear that they cared if [he] succeeded, and eventually so did [he]” (115). His mother and grandparents, through their constant attempts to keep Moore looking beyond his seemingly hopeless future, created expectations for him that he would ultimately want for himself. On the other hand, the other Wes Moore never seemed to have any meaningful expectations that he could seek. Even though his brother was too deep into drug and gang culture to escape, “[he] wanted Wes to be nothing like him” (72). Yet, Wes was consumed by the, “… same game that had consumed [his brother] and put a bullet or two in him,” and had never known anything in his family outside of drugs and gang violence, so drugs and gangs were the only expectation Wes had, the only place he saw himself fitting into (58). Ultimately, the expectations of those …show more content…
Rawls states that equality of opportunity represents, “… the background institutions of social and economic justice,” that help those who are most disadvantaged (Rawls 288). Through his own story, Moore displays how education allows those who come from essentially nothing can achieve success. It gives, “… a reason to believe that a story of struggle apathy, and pain… can still have a happy ending,” (Moore 183). Rawls also believes in the, “… equal opportunities of education for all regardless of family income” (Rawls 286). Both see education not only as providing knowledge for all people, but also resources and role models, as the most direct and effective method for creating greater social equality within a
What would you do if you learned that someone lived only a few blocks away from you, enduring identical names and the same fatherless childhood, yet ended up on disparate lives? The other Wes Moore was a convicted felon and murderer serving a life sentence in a federal prison, while the author Wes Moore was a honorable and respectable army officer and Rhodes Scholar; so the author Wes Moore proceeded to attain the key to the question in The Other Wes Moore. After several letter exchanges and prison visits, the two Wes Moores formed a deepening relationship. During this time, the author Wes Moore realized that the other Wes Moore had had a similar childhood to his. The two African American boys grew up fatherless and residing in Baltimore, Maryland,
Alexa Harlem Mrs. Mercer College Writing - 4 11 September 2015 Question #1 The Other Wes Moore is a novel that uses the structure informative and narrative which provides information about the characters throughout the book and tells the story. This informative and narrative structure contributes to the overall effect of the book because Wes Moore the author explains how the two Wes Moore’s lives changed into completely different paths. One Wes went to military school and the other stayed home and dealt drugs. One wes kills a police officer and is arrested and the other one visits him in prison.
The Other Wes Moore, is a chilling, eye opening story in which one man’s life could have easily been the others. Both Wes’s were raised in the same neighborhood, just blocks away from each other in Baltimore, Maryland. At a young age both young men became involved in the drug trade in Baltimore, one turned his life around, the other however continued to follow down that dark path. The author of the book went on to graduate from Oxford University and speak at INVESCO before Barak Obama accepted the democratic nomination for presidency. The Other Wes, continued with his life of crime until eventually he was arrested and found guilty for murder.
There are several reasons that contributed to the author Wes Moore success compared to the other Wes Moore. When the author Wes Moore entered Valley
The second Wes Moore allowed his rough childhood to influence his life decisions. His behavior shows how people grow up in different ways. However, the way people choose their decisions is what truly matters. The author uses pathos by presenting life experiences from both Wes Moore’s and creating strong emotions behind each story. The Other Wes Moore is a story around a pair of young individuals with indistinguishable and as well as practically identical lives, encountering adolescence in the same city. Honestly, at first look, the audience might be obliged to see these young fellows as the same, and contemplate what made their lives to twist up so in a startling way. To that extent the story is straightforward, but the two young individuals had one vital complication that drastically affected their destinies. The (Author) Wes Moore shows that in the novel, if kids don't have strong parental figures, the majority of them will not be successful in life.
Non fiction novels are great ways to make people aware of real life issues that happen everyday. People face poverty issues, racial issues, and environmental issues everyday of their life and are affected more than others. For example the environment is affected because of the different things people do in their everyday lives, like things that deal with fossil fuels and gas. Another example is race and how people are treated because of their specific race or religion. Issues like these are happening all around the world and most likely can be found in a nearby non-fiction novel.
Introduction Good morning distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen. I welcome you to the 24th annual Queensland Literary Symposium I’d like to highlight another prominent book that has captured readers with its engaging and thrilling storyline alone with significant aspects of human society and culture The story I specifically refer to is none other but the novel Jasper Jones Written by the Australian author Craig Silvery, Jasper Jones was set in the scorching summer of Western Australia in 1965.
Wes’s mother’s efforts are undying as she is continuously searching for ways to shield Wes from the “metastasizing drug trade”(Moore 56): helping him to find “neutral ground”(Moore 44), finding him a school she views as a “haven” where Wes will be able to “open [his] horizons”(Moore 48), and sending Wes to military school when he “[allows] [his] standards at school to become pathetic”(Moore 54). All of her acts of love, and her devotion to education help Wes to become a highly respected war veteran, and a flourishing businessman; unfortunately, not the same goes for the other Wes Moore, who is now serving life in jail. Wes’s parental supervision immediately skews from the other Wes’s, as his mother—Mary— leaves him home alone at the age of eight, the first time an officer “closed the second cuff”(Moore 35) around his wrist. Without his mother to keep him away from the corruption of the streets, Wes begins to involve himself in local gangs as society and the community around him sweep him up, to the point where there is no return. Similarly, Michael a character in “The Wire” lacks a mother who cares, and despite his initial efforts to stay innocent, he ends up falling to the enticing display of the unity of gangs.
How is it that two men that come from identical backgrounds end up being completely opposites? Wes Moore takes us back to his childhood growing up, and also introduces us to a character sharing the same name as him, and similarly, the same lifestyle. Both of the young men shared the absence of a father figure, living in poor neighborhoods, bad influences, and lack of education. While reading, we question “how?” and “why?”
And both Moores had positive and negative social influences. This essay by now established the influence family members can make in a person’s life, and in TOWM, family influence is a major key. Both Wes’ were influenced by at least one family member and respectively shaped the people they became. Similarly, the boys had friends who impacted them positively and negatively. When the author Wes started attending Riverdale all the students around him were white, therefore, he felt left out.
In our life, we often have experiences that teach us how and what we want to be like when we grow up. Everyone has ups and downs from time to time that make one want to stop and other times make one want to run while individually they feel free. The Garden Story by Katherine Mansfield and The First Born Son by Ernest Buckler both show how parental pressure, social pressure, and family pressure around an individual can influence the way one will treat others. Once in a while it is an advantage when they want to change the world to make it better for others, but oftentimes it is for the worse because they personally accept the problems they have and never trying to fix them. Both stories have parental influences that want them to stay as they are, tradition influences that professions stay in the family, and they are always compared to the better child that is more like by parents.
The natural distribution is neither just nor unjust; nor is it unjust that persons are born in society at some particular position” (Sandel 165). Rawls points out that our society has chosen to ignore the issue of inequity most of the time, so long that the effects of this indifference do not hurt their positions. Moreover, what Rawls has described in this quote is very much evident in our society. The citizens on top–especially upper class white males–have the power to pretend the inequities in American society don’t exist, therefore making our society unjust. More
The book I read during the summer was ¨The Other Wes Moore¨ and was written by Wes Moore. This book is about two men who have the same name but two different fates. Basically One of the Wes made good choices and the other made Bad choices. One of them chose to follow the path of being a wanted criminal and the other to being a successful youth advocate, combat veteran, social entrepreneur. For this essay I chose to write about the Wes Moore that made negative choices throughout his life.
The Other Wes Moore reveals how intrinsic factors, mainly social relationships, play a significant role in establishing someone's success, based off of lack of emotional support and obedience. The other Wes Moore’s family lacked in emotional support and in positive influences, leading him to failure. Nurture refers to all the variables that impact who someone is. These variables include how someone was raised, their social relationships, and their surrounding culture.
