The Cold War was a very significant period of time in the history of the world. The two Superpowers, USSR and the United States of America, were in the battlefield of ideology representing Socialism and Capitalism respectively. One of the most crucial conflicts in this Nuclear Arms Race was the Cuban Missile Crisis; in fact, it was the closest that the two sides ever got to the nuclear annihilation of the entire human species. As per the Monroe Doctrine of 1823, all the Americas would eventually be under the United States of America, and this supposedly justified the Bay of Pigs invasion by the U.S. to overthrow Castro, and return Capitalism to the nation. In consequence to this threatening attack of the U.S. Castro approached Khrushchev for economic and military support to stand up against Kennedy. Khrushchev and Castro thought that the Soviet missiles landing in Cuba would be the perfect recipe to get to an advantage in the war against Capitalism, and secure Socialist Cuba at the same time. In this manner, Castro and the Cubans were being defensive in their action of seeking help from the Soviet Union and merely placing nuclear missiles in Cuba; it cannot be termed to be aggression against the United States of America if it was a measure undertaken to secure a nation. It is safe to start by turning the tables and looking back to the time when the US was in the shoes of USSR. Was there anything wrong about the British becoming allies, and seeking for the help from the
In January of 1959, became communist under Fidel Castro. The United States tried to stage a coup to get rid of Castro, but the attack failed. In May 1962, the Soviet Union began to secretly ship nuclear warheads to Cuba. In October, U.S. spy planes detected medium range nuclear missiles being installed on the island. In the graphic shown for document D, it is shown that medium range missiles had the potential to reach New Orleans, Miami, and
Cuban Missile Crisis There were three different options to contemplate during the Cuban Missile Crisis. This all started when the US planned a secret attack on Cuba. Then Cuba and USSR planted missiles ready to attack on the US. The US planted missiles in Turkey and then it all began. The three solutions to the Cuban Missile Crisis were a nuclear war, limited war, or negotiate a way to remove the missiles.
The agreement was that Russia gave oil, machines and money to Cuba in exchange for sugar from the Cuban. The resource agreement alerted the USA and thus increased the tension between the two superpowers because USA felt that USSR was persuading Cuba into joining USSR political ideology which was communism (Source D). This increased the tensions and the USA stop trading with Cuba which then influenced Cuba to join with USSR communism. By the USSR trading and making agreements with Cuba with resources as well as putting missile basses in Cuba, this led up to the Cuban Missile Crisis and one of the factors that increased the tension between the USA and USSR. One can clearly see that the United States was the blame for the increasing tensions during the Cold War by taking drastic measures to protect themselves, forming alliances and being hypocritical towards the Soviet Union. The United States had installed a nuclear arsenal in Turkey, which was not looked on so lightly from the Soviet Union’s view point. Once USSR realized what was being taken place, they placed nuclear bombs in Cuba. As an act of defense, U.S.A decided to allow force if necessary in Cuba to protect themselves from USSR weapons.
Cuban Missile Crisis DBQ The Cold War happened just after WWII ended. The two main countries involved in the Cold War were the United States which believed in a capitalist society and the Soviet Union which believed in a communist society. After WWII all countries involved in it were having economic and political problems, European countries were also having few resources and were open to accepting new ideologists and that was the tension between the Americans and the Soviets started rising because they both thought their system was better and they both wanted Europeans and countries around the world to support either capitalism (Americans ideology) or communism (Soviets
America, fearing for their own safety, then put a quarantine around Cuba, not allowing any ships with weapons to enter. (Doc D) Tensions were high, with both capitalist and communist nations having the potential to launch a nuclear strike against the other. After some time, the Soviets decided to retreat. They removed their missiles from Cuba and the threat of a nuclear war subsided.
Findings Analysis In 1962 nuclear war seemed inevitable to the world, it was the first time nuclear war was hanging on a thread. “Since the 1950’s, as part of the Cold War, U.S. and Soviet Military strategy had focused on building nuclear weapons that could be used against each other in a conflict. ”(Kennedy and the Cuban Missile Crisis 22). In this quote it proves that John F. Kennedy’s actions did not lead to the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Soviet Union had been planning the crisis for a while. They were building the nuclear weapons since the
In addition, the Nuclear Arms and the Space Race, both of which were competitions of whom could develop technology faster, contributed to the cold war. However, the most dangerous and terrifying decision they made was the Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1962 it was discovered that the Soviet Union had nuclear bombs in Cuba, only 90 miles off the coast of the US. The Soviet Union placed the bombs in Cuba out of fear of a nuclear war. This way, if it became necessary, the Soviet Union could be prepared.
Introduction Cuba today is currently struggling because of the actions that previous government officials took. Cuba is a great place to visit and has high amounts of tourism, but it also got its flaws. The government controls most of the country which leads to a shortage of goods and services. The Cuban Missile Address is delivered October 22nd, 1962 in the Presidential office through a major radio and television address (Podell, Anzovin, and States United 705). Historically, it is worth mentioning that United States had attempted to overthrow Fidel Castro, who was at the time Prime Minister of the Republic of Cuba, in at least two occasions known as the Bay of Pigs Operation and Operation Mongoose, because of his communist regime and close relationship with the Soviet Union (Pious). Then, after the Bay of Pigs incident, Fidel Castro urged Nikita Khrushchev, the Secretary General of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, to send support and weapons to Cuba, because of the fear of another attack to his person/regime, Nikita did by sending missiles capable of carrying weapons of mass destruction, hence, this major crisis that lasted 14 days ending October 28, 1962 (Deinema and Leydesdorff). In addition, the target audience for this speech is the American people as President starts his speech with the phrase, “Good evening, my fellow citizens” (Kennedy); however, the secondary audience would be the Cuban people, whom he describes as captive people, the Soviet Union leaders, whom he directly addresses and even quotes, and Fidel Castro of course (Kennedy). As noted above, the cultural, socio-political context is important to understand the seriousness of this crisis and
This was due to an incident called the Cuban Missile Crisis. The crisis was a result of the USSR putting nuclear weapons in Cuba. The, Cuba would be in range to hit the US with weapons of mass destruction. The incident lasted only a few days until the Kennedy administration defused the ticking time bomb. Though a great charismatic leader, one operation puts a blemish on JFK’s report card.
John F. Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis John F. Kennedy acted to the best of his ability to solve the Cuban Missile Crisis, whether his powerful speeches, creating a committee, or his agreements with Khrushchev. The crisis began on October 15, 1962, when the Soviet Union placed nuclear missiles in Cuba, only ninety miles from Florida. The United States reacted by putting a quarantine, which did not imply a declaration of war like a blockade did, around Cuba. The Soviets then withdrew the missiles, ending the crisis. During the crisis, Kennedy took many important actions that led to the final agreement.
Late president Nikita Khrushchev (from USSR), agreed to assist Castro and took immediate action. He installed missiles in Cuba, which the US thought was a threat to the security of their nation. In summary, I think that this was a defensive move by the Cubans. I most definitely agree with

In addition to this military coups, repressive government in contrast to these armed guerilla organizations, liberation struggles which is taking place in the streets and of course the most known revolu-tion, the Cuban Revolution. Cuban Revolution has always been the subject of curiosity. In the backyard of the United States, although the American embargo, revolution has taken place was a big surprise for the whole world. When compared with other examples of the world, Cuban Revolution is more socialist and also this revolution continues to today.
