There is currently over 7 billion people living on the Earth and the population continues to grow. As the population continues to grow so does the need for transportation such as automobiles, which sold about 250 million units over the past 4 years. With that many vehicles out on the streets, tailpipe emissions increase drastically. This causes an increase in CO2 levels in the atmosphere, climate change around the world, and ultimately global warming. Although not all of CO2 emissions come from automobiles but 51%; which if it is eliminated completely could save the world another billion years or so. Many car manufacturers tried to approach this issue by creating a modern version of the electric car which exposes zero tailpipe emissions in the atmosphere. The earliest was the General Motors EV1 which has started a trend with other manufacturers to start producing EV versions of already existing cars. Unfortunately this new trend has come to an end after GM stopped producing the EV1 in 1999. In 2003 Toyota reintroduced the Prius. It’s a mid-sized hybrid that uses both gasoline and electricity to give an approximate 50 mpg output. The Clean Air Act is recorded as the most comprehensive air pollution control bill in the American history. This Act was created to reduce emissions and pollutants before they had become unmanageable. Since then smog, smoke stacks, and dirty water that had messages on saving the environment have become common. A few people were more aware of the Act and the regulations more than others. While being a large Act, it was an American public urgent call for action for what was seen as an environmental state of emergency.

The United States’ economy has been fueled by fossil fuels since the Industrial Revolution in the 1800s. Then, the early 1900s introduced a new, versatile source, oil. Through the 1950s, most Americans viewed rapid economic growth and high consumer spending as positive trends but this prosperity was fouling air and water and damaging natural resources.
Gasoline and diesel are fossil fuels and aren 't infinite. Battery electricity are better, they don’t pollute and don 't burn fossil fuels. Instead of having a gas tank and having to fill it up at a gas station, these cars have batteries in their place and can be recharged with a larger charging station and needs 220 volts. The recharged batteries stay charged until the car is driven. Some people say that battery powered cars are slower, but it isn’t by much and battery powered cars think is worth slowing down a little if it means saving the planet.
This is all because of global warming, and if we start switching to electric cars, we could make a big difference and maybe, just maybe the effects of global warming will decrease. Climate change has been a problem in the world since the industrial revolution and has been denied by major corporations and the government for centuries. This is because most non-renewable resources are major industries (i.e. oil, electricity, water, etc.) and the world 's economy profits from these resources. The bulk of corporations prioritize their wealth over the condition of the Earth beneath them. Economic growth is important for the people, yes; it is how we develop as a society, but at what cost? The Earth takes the brunt of society 's success, and denying the inevitable will not stop it from occurring.
First of all, let’s talk about the environment. I’m sure you all know about greenhouse gases and global warming, so I won’t talk much about that, but you may not know that road vehicles produce 10% of all man-made greenhouse gas emissions. This does include vehicles other than cars like trucks, but Tesla just came out with an electric truck which is faster and can carry more weight than any petrol/diesel truck. So, have you ever thought of diluting the emissions by switching to Hybrid Vehicles? You may be thinking that Hybrid Vehicles are modern inventions due to technological advancements but did you know that it existed prior to the invention of the conventional gasoline vehicles.
Once the demand for petroleum go down the war for fossil fuels might die out. The problem with that is what batteries in electric cars are made of, lithium. Lithium is not as scarce as petroleum but if all cars need them the supply would go down and some of the only places to extract large amounts of lithium are China and Afghanistan (Braun, World). This leaves electric cars in the same position as fossil fueled cars, where they rely on a non renewable material that is required for them to work, but to get that material there may be war, like there is for petroleum. There is also another problem with lithium, it is hard to dispose of.
