There are many traits possessed by those called heroes. Whether it is in real life or in fiction, in the past, present, and future every hero desires these character: traits intelligence, bravery, and honesty. “Montag picked a single small volume from the floor. Heroism in our culture could be very misinterpreted. People tend to think that hero’s need to be perfect because they are role models, saviors, or peacemakers. An example of a hero for me is Josh Hamilton, an outfielder for the Texas Rangers. Josh Hamilton started out as a power hitting prospect for the Tampa Bay Rays but struggled with addictions to drugs. He spent a short stint for the Reds before the Texas Rangers picked him up.

Courage has always been a trait that has captivated humanity. Whether it be out of envy for another’s strength or drawing strength out of another’s accomplishments, people have always been fascinated in the idea of a hero. People erect grand stories of superheroes, with alluring abilities, that show uncanny courage in the face of danger. Humanity also recognizes the heroes whose actions fabricate history, and they too have stories told about their courage, stories of everyday people doing extraordinary things. However, somewhere along the line the difference between these two types of heroes is lost, and their identities merged.

Today’s society is also experiencing savage behavior that is directly connected to violent media. The Sandy Hook gunman, Adam Lanza, had a collection of violent video games, including Call of Duty; a graphic first-person shooter. Violence like this can be seen when Montag burns Captain Beatty, “And then he was a shrieking blaze, a jumping, sprawling gibbering manikin . . . a writhing flame on the lawn as Montag shot one continuous pulse of liquid fire on him” (113). It is exposure to malicious media that has led them to accept violence as a quick way to fix their problems.

A question often addressed in literature, media, and art, as well as by people themselves. The typical idea of “heroism” tends to bring to mind an image of a superhero or someone who saves many lives, but does being heroic always involve having superpowers or putting yourself in danger to save others? Exploring what makes someone a “hero” in others’ eyes could just mean looking at people who do things that no one else would think or care to. In today’s society, it is rare to find a person who possesses even a few qualities of a true hero. The definition of a true hero is a person who is admired for their courage, achievements, or noble qualities. Having people in the world that are willingly prepared to be a hero in any situation is crucial to society. Imagine what 9/11 would have been like without average everyday people who chose to take heroic actions and save other lives while risking their own. Many people think that acting heroically comes naturally and can not be taught, on contrary others think that acting heroically is a quality that can be acquired.

Society today think that just because guns kill a majority of people, if the government bans them, everything in society will be perfect and there won’t be murders or a police officer can always eliminate the danger. These accusations are not true and it’s all based on the place and time.
