I have read one hundred thirty-seven pages of the novel The Raft by S.A. Bodeen. In this novel a girl, Robie, visits her aunt in Hawaii, and she is left alone to return home on a cargo plane. When the plane hits bad weather, it goes down. Robie is stuck in the middle of the ocean in a raft. As Robie and the only other survivor, Max, fight for their life, they run into a few complications. In this journal, I will be characterizing Robie and predicting outcomes for Robie and Starbuck, the seal. G: In this journal, Robie can be characterized as brave and smart. Y: (transition) brave R: She gets her nose pierced R: She stays at her aunt’s house alone R: She swims out to the dead body in the suit Y: (transition) smart R: She sets out …show more content…
As the text states, “And that hurts worse than getting your nose pierced?”(Bodeen 2). This quote shows that Robie is extremely brave to do something that she knows is going to hurt. Robie has the mindset that “you only live once.” Another example of Robie being brave is that she stayed at her aunt’s house alone. Robie was planning on staying at her aunt’s house for one week alone. She is brave to take on the adult role and responsibilities of living on one’s own. The last example of Robie being brave is that she swims out to the dead body in the survival suit. As the novel states, “Not brave enough to save myself. Not brave enough. Or was I?” (Bodeen 173). After giving herself a pep talk, Robie used all her bravery and swam out to the dead body to get the survival suit and beacon. Robie was brave to go get a dead body because she knew it had necessities that could help her. Secondly, Robie is smart. The first example of Robie being smart is when she set out containers in case of rain. As the text states, “Just in case of rain, I spent the next hour or so hunting for water vessels” (Bodeen163). As a result of this action, Robie is showing her …show more content…
First off a Tiger shark will eat Starbuck. The first reason why I think a Tiger shark will eat Starbuck is because the Tiger shark has eaten other animals and people so far. As the text states, “And the shark was there again, all teeth and fury. With one bite, the rest of the seal was gone” (Bodeen 161). This quote shows that the Tiger shark is an extremely vicious animal that kills numerous innocent beings. The Tiger shark has been brought up a few times already. I think that it will play a big role in the story; I think it will kill Starbuck. Another reason why I think that Starbuck will get eaten is because Starbuck has been hanging around where the Tiger shark has been. Starbuck has been relaxing in the sun and finding food by the island that the Tiger shark has been hanging around. The Tiger shark has been finding its meals in the area where Starbuck is; Starbuck has a good chance of becoming its next meal. The last reason why I think Starbuck will get eaten by the Tiger shark is that Starbuck does not know how to fend for himself. Starbuck’s mother was killed by the Tiger shark recently. He has been reliant on his mother for food and safety; he will have to learn to fend for himself. Starbuck is new at being on his own, and he is not experienced. Secondly, I predict that a plane will rescue Robie. The first reason why I think a plane will rescue Robie is that there has been other
Casper sacrifices himself in order to spare the tigers. Casper is being forced to kill the tigers but at last Casper makes his last decision to kill Marty and save the Siberian tigers once and for all.” Casper raised his hand in a salute … [before the] … chopper exploded” goodbye Casper said, Misha you’ve done it at last. Casper is one of the few characters that shown great bravery to save the tigers.
I think he will go for the fish Will the narrator pick the Bass or Sheila? He may pick the Bass. Firstly, the boy might pick the bass is because it is his favorite past time. He has a lot of knowledge about fishing; he knows what a bass sounds like from a splash. Fishing is 2nd nature to him; every time he gets his boat
Robie’s operators have given specific instructions to him about how he should deal with Reel. The instructions he has been given are; “We have to get her, alive or dead. Alive, preferably, so we can find out just what the hell happened.” (Baldacci 24). Robie is trained to follow orders to a tee.
She showed her true level of courage the night she left knowing her grandmother was trying to buy her and her children. After she left her grandmothers she knew she needed to continue without the help of others because she would put herself and her family at great risk. The fact that she left on her own with little to no help from others shows that she had great courage to get what she deserved as a person that was educated and had the ability to work. Along with her gaining and showing a high level of courage, she showed that she was not going to let her fear to control her.
What does it mean to brave? One aspect of bravery for me, is sacrificing everything you have and not being afraid to do anything. Bravery does not mean that a person has no emotion at all. Being brave means that you are afraid, but overcome that fear. Overcoming a specified fear gives a person courage and helps pass an obstacle.
Curt Lemons could handle any war scenario that was thrown at him, however, he hated going to the dentist. When the whole platoon went in for a routine checkup, Curt became overwhelmed and fainted instantly. This tore him apart on this inside as he believed this act was cowardly, as a man should have no problem seeing a dentist. To verify his courage, Curt goes back to the dentist and gets a perfectly good tooth pulled out. This idea of courage that Curt has isn’t real courage, but rather courage as to not look foolish.
Courage is the ability to do something that frightens one. It is one of the recurring and essential themes shown throughout Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Three characters in particular demonstrate their courage and bravery multiple times throughout the story. Most of the characters could be described as courageous and brave, but these three stand out the most. These bold, fearless and valiant characters are Atticus Finch, Boo Radley, and Mrs. Dubose.
Ruthie will leave Fingerbone with Sylvie, burning down the house that she lived in for so long leaving behind her sorrows and her old self; “I did not dare to turn my head to see if the house was burning” (Robinson 212). In Ruthie’s new life, she is more liberated and independent; “I believe it was the crossing of the bridge that changed me finally” (Robinson 215). In the beginning of the novel, Ruthie was a quiet and awkward girl that seeks acceptance from others, but after leaving Fingerbone, she was able to develop into the character that she is now, a drifter that does not seek anything; “Once they begin to look at me like that it is best that I leave” (Robinson
Starbuck goes on to beg Ahab to return to the "wife and child of thy loving, longing, paternal old age," and how he himself desires the "wife and child of his brotherly, sisterly play-fellow youth." (pg 444). At this point in the voyage, all these women and children are simply figures
Courage doesn 't just help you it can also help other people around you too. Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, Mildred D. Taylor uses Cassie Logan as an example of courage, although she has faced many rough and harsh times she has used courage to overcome them. Cassie faces many challenges but some of the ones that stood out to me were, standing up to the teacher when Little Man did not want his book because of the condition that it was in, standing up for herself at the Mercantile when she was not waited on, and T.J when he was not being so nice to Cassie and the Loganś. Cassie was a very smart and intelligent person. She always wanted to know what was going on because she wanted to know if there was something that she could do to help.
Bravery is the action of being courageous. If you are standing up for what you believe in, you are already winning. “Often, for undaunted courage, fate spares the man it has not already marked." (Raffel. 572-573) Bravery took a major part in this poem.
The shark represents man vs nature throughout the whole story up until the end. From the very beginning of both the film and novel, it starts off looking through the shark’s perspective. The novel’s intro gives some exposition about sharks, including one important definition about anoxia: “Once, if ever, it stopped, it would sink to the bottom of the ocean and die of anoxia” (Benchley 3). This definition not only acts as exposition, but also foreshadows how the shark eventually dies in the end of the novel. After the expository phase of both the movie and novel, the shark attacks its first victim--a drunk woman named Crissy.
Courage can be found where it is least expected. In her book, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Mildred Taylor uses Cassie as an example courage. Courage is the ability to do something, even though you are frightened of doing it, which Cassie shows a lot throughout the book. Cassie is a little girl, who is very smart, sassy, and courageous. She stands up for what she believes and helps others that need a voice.
For example, it is impossible for a mongoose to stay frightened for any length of time (para 24). This shows Rikki Tikki has lots of courage in almost anything that is important. He cannot be frightened. This means he has the courage he needs to be brave. Also, Rikki-tikki felt his eyes growing red and hot (when a mongoose’s eyes grow red, he is angry),
The fact that he does not feel the need to seek revenge on the White Whale shows that he understands that it is just another whale and has no special significance. Starbuck most likely believes that vengeance is not for man to take, but for God, and therefore does not seek revenge on the White Whale or the bloodshed of Captain
