Communism was an economic-political philosophy founded by Karl Marx and Fredrich Engels. These men both had similar principle which lead to their book named " The Communist Manifesto ". They both desired to end capitalism feeling that it was the social class system that led to exploitation of workers. This led to many conflicts between capitalism and communism as economic systems. Communism posed a domestic threat to America because communism resulted in Red Scare, Era of McCarthyism, and Cold War. Communism is one of other reasons that lead to the Red Scare. The Red Scare in the late 1940s and early 1950 was the fear of communism. During the Red Scare events communist pushed for basic rights , by having John Huston and Myrna Loy create the committee for the first amendment in protest of HUAC's hearings. Communist were also known for being a foreign threat because foreign communist begin to influence society. When the Red Scare kicked off as people who were suspected of having communist ties were often terrorized and jailed. Senator Joe McCarthy of Wisconsin believed communism was the most daunting threat to the American government at the time. Moreover, most Americans had only heard of communism, but were generally unaware of the topic until McCarthy preached his opinions. After his speech to the Republican National Convention in 1952, American citizens suddenly felt a responsibility to rid the country of communists. Although the thought of communism did not pose a danger to the average American, McCarthy’s rampant speeches made unknowing citizens feel a sense of urgency toward the topic. Imagine the wicked House of Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) arrest an innocent man. The HUAC does not arrest the man because he has committed a murder, but because he is a communist. Many communists became victims of HUAC in the Red Scare crisis of the 1950s. These communists made the right decision to speak out for their freedom and against injustice. These communists also spoke out for their freedom of different beliefs.

A person who sympathized with Communists was persecuted, just as if someone tried to defend the accused witches of Salem. Parallel to the Salem Witch Trials, the McCarthy Trials accused hundreds of innocent people of being Communists without any proof. Like Salem, if the accused confessed to communism, they would be blacklisted from their community, but not jailed. Sir William Phips was the Governor of Massachusetts at the time of the salem Witch Trials, and he refused to stop the trials until one of the accusers targeted his wife.
