In the Southern gothic tale written by William Faulkner, A Rose for Emily talks about a girl who is closed off from society due to an overpowering father. Emily’s father earns the role of antagonist because of the way he negatively affected Emily growing up and leaving her a dead flower. He drove away potential suitors for Emily which indicates the level of control he had not just on her, but on her love life. Her father did not let Emily make natural connections with the outside world, causing her psychological damage. Leading her to revert to a childlike nature and live in a life of reclusion, even after his death. Regardless of his behavior, he had good intentions for his daughter. He was a protective father who enforced a policy of exclusion around Emily, because he believed that no one in Jefferson is good enough for her. Emily’s father just wanted to protect her from shame, dishonor, and from those who lie beneath them. He is responsible for what becomes Emily’s permanent habit of solitude. The antagonist in each story kept their loved ones, the protagonists, away from living a fruitful life. Emily and Louise both represent flowers who were not taken care of carefully and were killed by their owners. All the control demanded by her father consumed Emily and drowned her. Emily’s father over watered his delicate, beautiful flower leaving her rotted and wilted similar to the description of Emily when she walks out to greet the Aldermen, “She looked bloated, like a body long submerged in motionless water”(804). Louise’s husband kept her, a strong yet fragile flower away from sunlight, which kept Louise from growing. Without the opportunity to grow within herself, Louise is left shriveled and dies before getting the chance to recover her
“A Rose for Emily” is a dark, suspenseful Gothic tale in which a young girl is put on a pedestal by a town who sees her as haughty and scornful. Miss Emily Grierson’s father controls her and her love life, pushing away all people until he dies and Emily is left alone. As her life goes on the townspeople watch her and judge Emily, almost turning her life into a spectacle to be talked about. At her death, a gruesome sight is unfolded when her lover of over forty years ago is found decomposed in her upstairs room. William Faulkner effectively builds epic suspense in “A Rose for Emily” by the unchronological order of the story, the treatment of Emily’s father towards her, and her family’s history of mental illness.
The narrator focuses a lot on Emily Grierson after her death. The narrator said multiple times they believed she wasn’t crazy. However, their actions proved to show the opposite. Emily’s father played a role in her isolation.

In order to fully comprehend the short story there must be some sort of understanding about the time period in which the story took place. As in most of his works one of the overbearing ideals of A Rose For Emily is a sense of class and of elegance that was as evident as the sky in the South. The main character of the story, Miss Emily Grierson, is William’s way of exemplifying this bygone way of life in a more modern era; and both Nicole and I agree that this is the main plot in the story. Throughout A Rose For Emily the idea of monuments and age are extremely prevalent as both Miss Emily and her homestead are commonly referred to as, “relic.”

Emily lives in Jefferson, Mississippi with her strict and over protective father who turns away any male suitor who shows any interest in her as he believes them to be unfit for his daughter. Throughout the story, the main character, Miss Emily Grierson, shows signs of what appears to be some form of mental illness. Although Faulkner never states that Miss Emily has anything wrong with her mental health, he does provide enough evidence to support that she is not psychologically stable. In “A Rose for Emily,” Faulkner portrays the main character as a mysterious icon of the small town of Jefferson, Mississippi. As the story states, Emily’s father is an admirable figure in the city of Jefferson. After his passing, the townspeople show the same respect for Emily, as well.
In this short stories “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allan Poe and “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner, the authors represent the sense of horror in their stories. They are very similar in expressing their terrifying point of view. However, there are also differences. “The Tell-Tale Heart” is told in the first person perspective which creates compulsory picture of a mad murdered, whereas the third person perspective of “A Rose for Emily” shows Miss Emily through the eyes of others, which changes the narrative radically. In Addition, Miss Emily committed the crime because the fear of being alone.
Emily kept her house the same way it had always been and was letting it decay while she stayed in it. She refused to clean or change the house at all to preserve it in the Old South. She did not want to accept the death of other people. When Emily’s father died, she refused the town from taking his body and burying it. She wanted to keep her father’s body with her and the town was “about to use law and force, but she broke down, and they buried her father quickly” (453).
When Emily’s body was found dead, her servant for someone who is visiting and as soon as he realizes she is dead he “walk[s] through the house and out the back and [is] never seen again.” To him he thinks that the town is going to blame him for Emily’s death even if he didn’t do it. The value of romance and mortality resembles the theme of obsession, and is shown throughout the plots, and the characters in, “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner and “The Birth Mark” by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Firstly, Faulkner illustrates obsession of romance through mortality. In addition, Emily’s obsessive illness of love over death it often seen throughout the plot. Lastly, Hawthorne demonstrates the obsession of mortality thorough romance, through the main protagonist, Aylmer in “The Birth Mark.” To compare, Emily and Aylmer believe their obsessive consequences was from the heart, despite their obsessive disorders.
