The Short Story 'New York Day Women'

This speech is being delivered in Philadelphia to a convention of vigorous women who are willing to fight for their desires. An emotional appear is used to target the nurturing side of each and every woman in attendance. The adults of the United States are sound asleep while the sweet, innocent children are slaving away in factories. Two women are the most important in a grown man’s life, his wife and his mother. Adam Gopnik, New York University, Institute of Fine Arts graduate and a long time writer for The New Yorker explores his relationship to these women in his article “Bread and Women” (AdamGopnik.com). Gopnik describes how his sojourn into bread baking uncovered insights about his mother and spouse. He utilizes allusions, epithets, and dialogue to portray his wife and mother as important individuals who are unique and interesting in their own rights. Gopnik uses allusions to ancient buildings and famous figures to clarify the complex personalities of his beloved muses.

During the 19th century, women were overshadowed by the men of their household, therefore they had no sense of independence nor dominance. In Mary Freeman’s short story, “The Revolt of Mother,” the author presents Sarah Penn, a woman who takes a stand against her husband. In the beginning, the reader learns that Sarah is a hardworking mother and wife. She maintains the household work and meets her children needs. She is suddenly confused of her husband’s actions concerning their future.

The 1920s was a crazy decade for Americans. More people were now living in rural areas instead of the country side, the wealth of the country doubled, and many were buying the same things due to better advertising, but the most exciting thing was the new lifestyle changes that were happening to women. Societies view of a woman would completely change during this amazing decade. Women were now able to vote, try new fashion styles, listen to more unique music, and experience a new social freedom. The most drastic change was women’s lives in politics.

It seemed that they were in charge of the children only for the day; it was hard to believe they were regularly responsible for anything other than themselves (16). ” There is a very prominent lack of motherly feelings between Mrs. Das and her children. She acts more like an uniterested teenage sibling than a composed, mature mother. What is quite shocking is the way that Mrs. Das interacts with her daughter.

She hopes for a world where there is only her and no responsibility, so she attempts to separate herself from reality but inevitably struggles to do so. The reader is therefore within two worlds that the mother is seeing, her ideal and reality. The reader soon learns that both those worlds are blurred, and the mother has an incredibly difficult time separating the two. The “vanished cricket” (7) she saw may be a representation of herself describing her own lost opportunity of wishing that she could vanish or even turn back the clock to a better and less stressful time in her life. Judith Butler’s Gender Troubles emphasizes gender as the constant repetition of non-existent ideals to uphold a masculine-dominant culture. Likewise, “Body Politics” highlights this belief within the overtly feminine qualities of city women. As a whole, the poem contrasts idealized feminine “city women” with a “real woman” who possesses both feminine and masculine qualities. The mother figure challenges both the gender binary and the patriarchal order by rejecting the feminine gender norms of the society. This feminist reading of the poem makes many valuable and probable claims, however the feminist approach contains some weaknesses.

Connie’s mother keeps picking at her for everything. The mother clearly shows that the older sister June is her favorite. June does everything right and gets praised by her mother all the time. Connie hears almost every day that June saved money, helped clean the house, cooked for the family. When the mother speaks on the phone with her friends, she favors everything that June does, and criticizes Connie.
