Symbolism is a way to enhance the reader's comprehension on the message they are trying to give. Symbolism acts as webbing between theme and story. Its able to cause the reader to have a visual representation of a certain concept. This is what Ayn Rand was able to articulately do. This literary element was able to help distinguish anthem to truly be apart of the dystopian genre.
Anthem was able to give different places in the story a deeper meaning. “ We do not wish to look upon the Uncharted Forest. We do not wish to think of it.”( ). The Uncharted Forest in the story symbolizes all of the bad events that took place in the past that is to not be spoken about. When you give the reader a visual representation of a concept, they are able to put themselves in the situation and relate.

We shall be forgiven for anything we say tonight…” ( ). When you think of a light bulb lighting up, you think of an idea popping up. Then the idea leads to questions causing the light to brighten up everything that was darkened. Which is exactly what Ayn Rand was trying to reveal to us through symbolism. It causes everyone to understand it in their own unique way.
In this story, the author was also able to make a living being be used as a symbol. There was a person who was considered perfect and was called The Golden One. “ We think that in the wisdom of women the Golden One had understood more than we can understand.” She had the image of being the key that opened the door to many possibilities for Equality.
Symbolism appears many times in Anthem. Ayn Rand had the ability to give settings and people deeper meanings that we could understand ourselves. It helped us deepen the understanding of the point she was trying to make. Symbolism is a good literary device that could be used to distinguish a novel to be apart of a dystopian
In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand, there are two places, the city and the uncharted forest. While being next to each other, they are both similar and different. There are many examples throughout the book about they are different.
Imagine a world that has lacked in society and acted as if no one should be given freedom or opportunities. Placed in the future, is a community full of people who have been beaten by the word “we”, has been taught as if freedom does not exist, and has been stuck in the ways of the past. The place with such limited amount of imagination is Anthem. Anthem has many rules to follow and to obey, such as to not favor one person over another, and those who dare to disobey any of the rules will be beaten or sent to Palace of Corrective Detention. The people are to wear a bracelet that has their name carved on it and are to call themselves we instead of I.
Anthem is a book where many people do what other people tell them to do. Anthem is a very dystopian place where there are not many things to do, and not many people look upon. “We looked upon union 5-3992, who were a pale boy with only half a brain, and do as they did, that we might me like them.”(Rand 18) This
The poet, Lascelles Abercrombie once said, “There is only one thing which can master the perplexed stuff of epic material into unity; and that is, an ability to see in particular human experience some significant symbolism of man 's general destiny.”. He talked about how powerful of a tool symbolism is and how it is the only thing that can truly define a highly complex ‘destiny’ or series of events. Symbolism is something that is found throughout Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee shows the reader that racism is a product of society, she portrays the matter through her symbolism of the mad dog, the birds and the bugs.
Another example of symbolism comes from Mr. Shiftlet. Towards the end of the story, Mr. Shiftlet picked up a “hitchhiker” (O'Connor 866). Feeling depressed for abandoning Lucynell, Mr. Shiftlet picks up a “hitchhiker” from the side of the road. Shiftlet's reasoning in doing such was to grasp redemption. After being yelled at by the young boy Shiftlet “is bluntly reminded of the lack of a religious presence in his rootless existence” (Encylcopedia.com).
Symbolisms are commonly used by authors to emphasize a certain type of atmosphere in a novel and it also symbolizes characteristic features of characters and specific places (Your Dictionary). The use of symbolism is really important in the play A Streetcar Named Desire because every symbol the author uses has a deep meaning in the character’s feelings and also it has a deep secret that character wants to hide from others. Thus, this helps the readers to emotionally feel and also helps the readers to focus more into the play and without symbolism, is not going to be easy for readers to understand the book they are reading. The main symbolism in A Streetcar Named Desire is light bulb and the paper lantern.
Communism, a political theory advocating social war, was born in the 19th century, farthered by Karl Marx and later took a toll on the rest of the world. The Bolshevik Revolution took control over the Soviet Union and communism began to rise in Russia and everywhere else for that matter. Communism sparked rebellion and believers. In the novel Anthem, the author Ayn Rand recreates history using connection, characterization and tone in a fictional futuristic dystopia. Anthem There are many reasons why dystopian story draw young adults attention. Many young adults compare the books/stories to their life. Adults don’t give them any freedom. They are told to do everything. they have too many rules for life, they can never have fun.
Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. In A Lesson Before Dying, author Ishmael Beah uses symbolism to reinforce the theme of oppression and the struggle for freedom. First, Beah’s rap cassettes symbolize his free boyhood and the loss of it. Beah carries a cassette with him until he is conscripted into the army. The cassette stays in his pocket, and acts as a reminder of his free childhood.
What is symbolism? Maybe you have seen brands with their own symbols or maybe you have a word that is personal to you and your life. What’s the effect that the sign or word has on you? In “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh” there are many symbols and meanings, some more complex than others. A young drummer boy named Joby has some struggles while in the army but his mood ends up changing in the end because of some highly relevant symbols and metaphors.
Symbolism can use an object (like a tree of birds), or art, (like Melinda’s art project or Mr. Freeman's canvas) to represent an abstract idea. Laurie Halse Anderson uses symbolism to hint at a certain mood or emotion, rather than just blatantly saying it. So, the use of symbolism is important because it helps create meaning and emotion in a story. Symbolism makes a book fun to read, the symbolism produces a thought provoking work of art and it, (like in this book), adds meaning to seemingly unrelated objects and elicits emotions in the
“Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal sense.” Symbols can add a deeper meaning than just an object itself that the author is trying to make. Symbols can also foreshadow what is yet to come. The audience can interpret a symbol in many ways it depends on their experience. In Southside Chicago the Younger family is struggling to have hope as they are always facing society.
Symbolism in general is the building blocks to all sources of literature and can shape a piece of writing in many ways. Symbols in general can portray what something or someone represents, giving a deeper and metaphorical meaning to a symbol. Symbolism is often used within poetry, literature, music, or even art. This is how an author conveys a different meaning to the audience. For example artists may use the color “red” not only because of the color theory, but to convey love, passion, and maybe even health.
Symbolism can be everywhere. Anything can be symbolic of something. Symbolism doesn’t have one meaning, it has multiple meaning which can be different for every person due to the different perspective of people. However, it isn’t just objects that are symbolic, in fact, actions can also be symbolic of something. What the readers can do to find symbolism in a book is find multiple meanings to one thing.
