Karla Cornejo Villavicencio’s The Undocumented Americans is a work of nonfiction that shins light on the lives and experiences of undocumented immigrants in the United States. While living a pretty rough life as a child being undocumented and having to live in the shadows, Cornejo Villavicencio shies away from preaching about her hardships and focuses more on the immigrant population in specific regions. Throughout her arguments and insightful experiences, Villavicencio adds to the bigger pictured situated around the idea of migration, challenging commonly held assumptions and stereotypes about these individuals known as immigrants. Immigrants have been looked at as a nuisance and a hindrance to the overall success of populations. Cornejo Villavicencio expresses the feelings of being an immigrant when she writes “There’s a pain to being an undocumented person in American that is constant and dull, like a headache.” This pain that she is referring to, stems from the origins of immigrants always feeling stressed and strained into an identity different from who they really are. She allows the reader to see the firsthand experiences and immerse themselves into their stories. She talks about 9/11 and the importance that immigrants played in rebuilding the city after the plane crashes and she refers to them as “second responders.” The undocumented Americans, risking their lives working to find remains of people and clean up the tons of debris left behind. Working for little pay, with little to no safety gear in the harshest conditions, Cornejo Villavicencio tries to flip the script on how we view the word immigrant. When she connects the words “undocumented immigrants” to the words “second responders”, she forces the readers to have a new respect for these individuals. She shares her experiences with an individual named Enrique, who exposes the systematic slavery immigrants are forced to take part in to avoid detection. Cornejo Villavicencio shares her accounts with Enrique, “The Americans who own the contracting companies are all white. They hire Hispanic people to work as subcontractors and they’re the ones who deal directly with laborers. When the American contractors come to the work sites, the subcontractors treat them like gods,” he says. “They make us stop talking if we were talking, and we have to turn off the music if we were listening to music. Chavez examines the assumptions made by the media and the public by drawing in sources like magazine articles and illustrations to provide the audience with exactly how these accusations are made and shared with the public. Chavez questions what it means and what it takes to be considered an American citizen and how Latinos, particularly Mexicans, have many things stacked up against. There are no doubts that the number of undocumented immigrants has steadily increased each year. Leo R. Chavez argues that because of the rise in the numbers, it makes it easier for the media to assume that undocumented immigrants, particularly Mexicans, are a threat to our nation through an invasion. Chavez’s idea of a Mexican reconquest is developed through something he calls the Quebec model.
Being “Different” Pat Mora, the writer of “Legal Alien”, evokes empathy in the audience to bring a deeper understanding of the world by using vivid imagery, juxtaposition, and code switching. Mora addresses cultural tension and identity crisis, explaining she herself, a Mexican- American, is not accepted in either Mexican communities or American communities. Mora illustrates, “Bi-lingual, Bi-cultural/ able to slip from ‘How’s life?’ to ‘Me’ stan volviendo loca’/… a handy token slipping back and forth,” (Mora 1-3/16-17).
Ruth Gomberg-Munoz's Labor and Legaility: An Ethnography of a Mexican Immigrant Network, describes the lives of undocumented immigrants from Mexico who work as busboys In a Chicago restaurant. Gomberg-Munoz gives insight into the new lives of the boys, through her compilation of their experiences both before crossing the border and after moving away from home into an unknown world. As an ethnography, the book gives information and details of the workers without arguing or taking a stance on immigration itself; it is instead presented in a manner that attempts to give readers a full understanding of the undocumented life through the revelation of the ones living it. Undocumented by Dan-el Padilla Peralta is a memoir that offers a vivid insight into the experiences of Latino/a/e immigrants in the United States. The book explores two interrelated themes: the author's personal experience as an undocumented immigrant and the broader socio-political context that shapes the lives of undocumented immigrants in the United States. Through these themes, Padilla sheds light on the challenges that undocumented immigrants face, including stereotype threats. One of the themes that run through the book is the experience of living in the shadows as an undocumented immigrant.
Humans rarely change their ways; they stay in their own worlds and always interact with the same types of people. Unfortunately, this habit often creates unseen barriers that divide and alienate human beings from one another. In Luis Alberto Urrea’s book The Devil’s Highway, Urrea provides a personal perspective to immigration by telling the story of 26 illegal immigrants, known as the Wellton 26, who are abandoned as they cross the Mexico-U.S. border. Through their story, Urrea proves there are invisible borders among people that create prejudice, such as language, ethnicity, and economic status. By reading The Devil’s Highway, it is clear that these barriers must be broken down to ensure harmony within society.
“Translation Nation” In the book, Translation Nation, Hector Tobar shows us the hard experiences that Latino immigrants face in the U.S. while pursuing the American Dream. Tobar traveled through some cities in this country visiting individuals and communities to gather those experiences. Through the stories of many people, including himself as son of Guatemalan immigrants, he allows us to see situations as for example, racisms, bad job conditions, and poverty among this ethnic group. The difficulties that Latino Immigrant face, as for example, the case of a group of neighbors in Maywood, California who were mocked because their accent when speaking English reminds me of similar situations that I have also face as an immigrant from México.
Immigration is deeply rooted in the American culture, yet it is still an issue that has the country divided. Marcelo and Carola Suarez-Orozco, in their essay, “How Immigrants Became ‘Other’” explore the topic of immigration. They argue that Americans view many immigrants as criminals entering America with the hopes of stealing jobs and taking over, but that this viewpoint is not true. They claim that immigrants give up a lot to even have a chance to come into America and will take whatever they can get when they come. The Suarez-Orozco’s support their argument using authority figures to gain credibility as well as exemplification through immigrant stories.
For a nine-year-old who wants nothing more than to make her mother proud this was exciting. In the beginning, we can see her excitement and desire, “in the beginning I was just as excited as my mother, maybe even more so.” (Tan). However, as we follow the story we see her excitement quickly fade to sorrow and anger. The high expectations immigrant families place on their children is still a very relevant social issue and can be witnessed throughout the United States.

More specifically, this source talks about the other side of the issue of unauthorized immigrants; the human face of it all. “How Immigrants Become ‘Other’” depicts the monster from one of Jeffrey Jerome Cohen’s thesis in the article, “Monster Culture (7 Theses).” The monster seen in the source “How Immigrants Become ‘Other’” is the one that Cohen talks about in his fourth thesis, “The Monster Dwells at the Gates of Difference.”

The film Mi Familia (or My Family) covers the journey and experiences of one Mexican-American (or “Chicano”) family from Mexico as they start a new life in the United States. “The virtual personas of Latino immigrants (represented as a threat to the nation) make the authority that has accumulated for real immigrants in their role as workers and consumers vanish” (Chavez 47). In the public eye Latinos are depicted as noncompliant and dangerous citizens and noncitizens of the United States. “The virtual lives of ‘Mexicans,’ ‘Chicanos,’ ‘illegal aliens,’ and ‘immigrants’ become abstractions and representations that stand in the place of real lives” (Chavez 47). It is depressing to understand that the majority of the United States strictly sees Latinos as these distorted images. The Back of a Nonexistent Line In the film Documented and The New York Times article “My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant,” Jose Antonio Vargas describes his experience as an undocumented immigrant in the United States and provides a passionate argument for creating a pathway to citizenship for others like Vargas, who are undocumented as well. Although both the film and article give the viewers and readers an insight into Vargas’ difficult journey, a particular scene in the film sends an unspoken message about the United States as a whole. As a young child, after being told of how poor her houseboy Fido was, Adichie did not believe his family could also be hardworking. “Their poverty was my single story of them. ”(Adichie) She also details how later, on a trip to Guadalajara she was overwhelmed with shame because her only image of Mexicans was the “abject immigrant” due to the “…endless stories of Mexicans as people who were fleecing the healthcare system, sneaking across the border, being arrested at the border, that sort of thing.” (Adichie)a She was caught by surprise when she saw Mexicans happy and at work in the marketplace.
“Let them eat cake,” she said, just like Marie Antoinette. In Jimmy Santiago Baca’s emotionally-charged poem, “So Mexicans Are Taking Jobs from Americans,” he shows us in vivid detail how his people are living in poverty and scraping for pennies while the rich and powerful live on as if nothing is wrong in the rest of the world. It’s a portion of life that desperately needed attention called to it. Given what we know so far, how does this poem go about presenting this reality to the rest of the world? Baca’s satirical poem is, in my belief, simple in its message and yet complex in its message; from the author’s intentions to the story’s biting wit to its political commentary, “Mexicans” is a bold statement from somebody who has had enough.
