During the course of the semester in my History 395 class we have read three historical monographs that covers a wide range of ordinary people in history. The first monograph we read was The Return of Martin Guerre by social and cultural historian Natalie Zemon Davis. The book covers a historical event about a 16th century French man named Martin Guerre who had his identity stolen by Arnaud du Tilh, and the reactions of the village and “his” family. The second monograph we read was Neighbors by political historian Jan T. Gross. The book is about a massacre in the small Jewish town of Jedwabne, Poland during World War II.

If someone is in need of help you help them. Many may think it’s an obvious answer. It’s what's right, it’s what you do. In the book The Beekeeper: Rescuing the Stolen Women of Iraq by Dunya Mikhail, Mikhail explores the lives of many victims of ISIS and how they were affected by this terrorist group. Mikhail writes about a man who gathers a small group of people who use their prior knowledge to help these women to escape ISIS.

Xiong uses battles, executions, assassinations, and scandals to appeal to readers of any genre. Once a reader gets into the book they are hooked in the epic events of the book and the deep look into the ruling class. Unfortunately, Xiong’s novel might somewhat difficult to get into for many readers with no experience in Chinese history. Xiong also attempts to utilize dialogue that often comes off as underdeveloped or simplistic.

The Rape of Nanking, written by Iris Chang, is a documentary style book that offers inside previews to the horrifying atrocities that occurred in Nanking, the capital of the Republic of China, between December 1937 and February 1938. Chang’s writing style is straightforward and unfiltered, offering no barrier between the reader and the horrific events that are unveiled in the text. The book begins with a brief introduction of Chinese and Japanese cultural background, explaining the beliefs of the Chinese Confucianism and the Japanese Samurai; both of which greatly affect the reasons the war was so gruesome. It also opens the eyes of the reader as to why Chang would want to pursue such a gripping and controversial topic. One reason for this

Maxine Hong Kingston's use of talk stories in The Woman Warrior emphasizes that individuals will find a more fulfilling life if they defy the traditional gender norms place on them by society. While contemplating beauty standards in Chinese society in “No Name Woman” Maxine Kingston thinks, “Sister used to sit on their beds and cry together… as their mothers or their slaves removed the bandages for a few minutes each night and let the blood gush back into their veins” (9). From a young age girls are expected to be binding their feet and are told that it is to look beautiful, but in reality that is not why. When a womans feet are bound they are restrained and silenced. These girls could be free and happy but they are restrained by men through this binding.

Fighting For Their Lives How hard would you fight for the life you knew you deserved? This paper will take a look at two individuals who fought hard for the life they knew they deserved and the identity their families tried to suppress. We will talk about a young girl who fought for her identity instead of the identity that her family wanted her to have. We will also talk about a young boy who grew up fighting.

Many of her experiences during the Cultural Revolution changed how she thought, and it helped her to realize who she was. Her intelligence, conflict between pursuing politics and staying loyal to her family, and her devotion to her family have made Ji-Li into the experienced and successful person that she is today. Her experience and success is shown through her novel’s success and her care for her family when she moved to the United States. The Cultural Revolution changed Ji-Li in many different ways, and those changes improved her morale, there are many times that are very formative throughout our daily

It came to dominate my understanding of the discussion on the social and historical scene and to restrict my ability to participate in that discussion.(444) If we go back and use the reference again of the electronic tool we can see the struggle of being at home and communicating with her family and having an influence of capitalistic viewpoints and living the life of a capitalist, then immediately having to communicate in a different language at school and being surrounded by socialistic views and living the life of a socialist. Her thoughts were constantly flip-flopping and this became very frustrating for her. If we bring all these struggles into one main purpose, Min-Zhan Lu’s mother falls into silence two months before her death and Min-Zhan Lu attempts to “fill up that silence with words that I have since come to by reflecting on my earlier experience as a student in China.(437) The struggles that she faced growing up in China as a student and her past experiences have really helped her overcome life obstacles and develop her as a better reader and writer.

The conflict of the story “The Fighter”, written by Walter Dean Myers, is that Billy Giles is having trouble with some things such as money issues. Billy Giles does not have a lot of money so he has to fight and box to get paid. His wife Johnnie Mae does not want him fighting so he has to keep the pride to stay in the fight without his wife finding out. In the beginning of the story the text states, “Billy Giles told his wife that he was going to the gym to work out. If he told her the truth, that he was going to fight again, he knew she would have cried” (27).

4.0 Recommendations Future authors of Asian Texts, should read Anh Do’s autobiography and scan the words extremely carefully to understand how Do, kept the reader interested in every word he wrote. And put themselves in Do’s shoes, by

Mulan Disney Movie vs. The Legend of Mulan In China during the Northern Wei dynasty that lasted from 386A.D. to 534A.D. Hua Mulan lived but we all know about her story from the famous Disney movie “Mulan”. The Disney movie helps kids learn her story but is not the best source for the real facts. There are many differences between Mulan's’ legend and the “Mulan” Disney movie. The legend of Mulan tells us that Hua Mulan lived during the Northern Wei dynasty.

In The Return of Martin Guerre, Natalie Zemon Davis uses her sources through Jean de Coras to recreate and analyze the trials of Arnaud du Tilh, Martin Guerre, and his wife, Bertrande as a microhistory to gain a perspective and a glimpse of life for the average peasant during this time period. Natalie Zemon Davis’ sources are of diverse bases. Her main source, however is from Jean de Coras. Coras was a judge in part of the case in Toulouse. He was present, and his credibility enables him.

The Woman Warrior is a “memoir of a girlhood among ghosts” in which Maxine Hong Kingston recounts her experiences as a second generation immigrant. She tells the story of her childhood by intertwining Chinese talk-story and personal experience, filling in the gaps in her memory with assumptions. The Woman Warrior dismantles the archetype of the typical mother-daughter relationship by suggesting that diaspora redefines archetypes by combining conflicting societal norms. A mother’s typical role in a mother-daughter relationship is one of guidance and leadership. Parents are responsible for teaching a child right from wrong and good from evil.

The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston addresses prevalent topics faced in America today. How should women act? Should women be treated differently from men? In her memoir, Kingston faces many obstacles with her Chinese-American identity such as finding her voice as a young woman. In “White Tigers,” Kingston tells her own version of a popular Chinese ballad, “Fa Mu Lan,” while incorporating her own reality back into the section.
