The book Anthem by Ayn Rand is an example of a dystopian society. The definition of a dystopian society, is a society that is in the illusion of a perfect society, but in reality they are living a horrible life, but they don’t know any better. In Anthem the main character equality broke that illusion and figured out what was happening. Another example of a dystopian is the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. In the Hunger Games people lived and districts and had their lives chosen for them before they were born. Those people didn’t know anything from the way they were living, they were living in a illusion. Both of these books are enjoyed by teens around the world. I believe that dystopian literature is popular among modern day teens because …show more content…
Teens feel like they have no choices but what there parents, teachers, or other authority figures, tell them. Just like how all the districts had no choice, but to do what the capital says.Teenagers are very rebellious and don’t want to do what authority figures tell them. Modern day teens are very much like the main character of the Hunger Games Katniss. Katniss was always being told by the capital what to do. Even if she didn’t agree with what they wanted her to do, she still had to do it. If Katniss refused, the capitol threaten to kill her friends and family. This can be related to when teens refuse to do what their parents say, their parents threaten to take away their phones or ground them. In the book, at the end of the hunger games when Peeta and Katniss are the only ones left the capital says “The earlier revision has been revoked… Only one winner may be allowed”(Collins 25). Katniss refused to listen to what the council said, like a teen may refuse to listen what their parents say. Katniss paid for her decision the council made her do a number of horrible things. Just like a parent would punish a teenager. Teens today see these connections between their lives and and the main characters of dystopian books. These connections are what appeals to them so much, and makes them want to read Dystopian
“Conformity is the jailer of freedom, and the enemy of growth” (John F. Kennedy). The novella “Anthem” written by Ayn Rand expresses the battle between one's self and conformity through the character Equality 7-2521. Equality 7-2521 struggles to conform within the collectivism of his society. As he grows through life he realizes how divergent he really is from his fellow brothers. Through his actions Equality slowly discovers the importance of egoism in a society.
Dystopian Complications- Anthem VS. The Maze Runner “ And if you 're not needed by you brother men, there is no reason for you to burden the earth with your bodies…”(Rand, 1.20) Dystopian literature is a type of genre that is dark and like everything has just lost all common sense. Teens are going into the dystopian fandom because it 's like the music the listen too. “Against the rules.
Ayn Rand says, “God…a being whose only definition is that he is beyond man’s power to conceive.” When one can’t think for their self, how can one be set free? The citizens of society conform to the belief that as a group they are the great WE. The word “I” is not in the vocabulary of men. Ayn Rand’s novella, Anthem portrays examples of a dystopian text because the protagonist questions the social and political systems, citizens conform to uniform expectations, and the protagonist is struggling to escape.
Imagine a world where people are told to do for a living and having many strictly rules, would people want that? Ayn Rand the author of Anthem describes a dystopian place where everything is strict and bad. In these books they all have strict rules for the people like what job they have to have the rest of their lives. Teenagers relate to the Giver, by having strict rules on them. They all have a higher power above everyone.
In the novel Anthem, Ayn Rand creates a society where individualism is a sin. The protagonist, Equality 7-2521 disagrees with the government’s beliefs of a collectivist society and supports the idea of individualism. Like on page 101, Equality 7-2521 realizes that "To be free, a man must be free of his brothers.” By this, Equality 7-2521 finally understands that he must be independent and different in order to succeed in his society. He displays Rand’s belief of egoism by his discovery of electricity, the way he stood up to the government, and how he shared his belief of individualism with Liberty 5-3000-also known as the Golden One-the beautiful peasant in which he fell in love with.
No freedom. No creativity. No individuality. Create a picture, being in a society that strictly imposes a set of rules in which one must obey and carry out to create this “perfect” canvas. This is what is described in Ayn Rand's novella.
The word “I” establishes one’s distinctiveness. A society that encourages and enforces the binding of men together, therefore forming a collective unit is Ayn Rand’s idea behind her novella Anthem, a story set in a dictator-like dystopian world. The government in Anthem enforces “the great WE”, which reveals the selflessness of the citizens living in that society (19). Simply using the plural pronouns “we”, “they”, and “our” shows the unity of the people, that individuality is a crime, and that the goal of their labor is for the good of everyone else. Once a person turns 15 years of age, their lives are well planned out for them until their deaths.
Ayn Rand was born into a wealthy family in Russia. Life was impressive until the Soviets came into power and took away all her family's wealth. She went from living a happy, comfortable life to struggling and almost starving to death. Ayn Rand had the perspective of seeing both capitalism and communism first hand. Communism destroyed her comfortable way of life and inspired her to write the book Anthem.
A man by the name Yegor Letov once said “I am a communist. Communism is when a person overcomes his personal self and turns into more than just 'me'.” (Yegor Letov Quotes). Mr. Letov believed in a society based on communism, which would create similarity between each member of this society. Any choices made would no longer be about ‘yourself’ as he said, but instead would be replaced with the concept to always think as ‘we’.
In the novel Anthem the author, Ayn Rand discusses the ways Equality 7-2521’s world is a dystopia because independent thought, information and freedom are restricted, the natural world was banished and distressed, a concept is worshipped by the citizens and the society is an illusion of a perfect , utopian world. To begin with, Ayn Rand explains how the Equality 7-2521’s world is a dystopian society because the freedom of think and do anything for yourself is restricted. Equality states “It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see... It is as if we were speaking alone to no ears but our own.
“The greatest crimes in the world are not committed by people breaking the rules but by people following the rules. It 's people who follow orders that drop bombs and massacre villages.” -- Banksy, Wall and Piece. A society cannot function without a system of rules to create order and morality. However, the creators of the nameless, collectivist community in Anthem took this concept too far with the complete removal of individualism—the root of ego.
Why Dystopian Literature is Popular Among Young Adults According to Lauren Destefano “Most Dystopian Literature and contemporan, paints a future world that puts a twist on present society.” The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Anthem by Ayn Rand are a few Novels based on a dystopian society that is appealing to young adults. Alexia Redondo p3“Control: To direct the behavior of; to have power over; to direct the actions or function of;” (merriam-webster). The overview of the society in the novel Anthem is, the people of the society believe in equality, the opposite of individuality, and a Dystopian society which is the “perfect” society, but one citizen named equality 7-2521 does not believe in a “perfect” society. The process behind creating a collective society in Anthem requires control over education, family, and knowledge. Education is a huge roll in every person's everyday life, but in the novel Anthem the society doesn't not agree. In the novel Anthem there are a plethora amount of occupations the society controls over a individual, such as education.
