If loves take risks, then, might it be the same for friends? Trusting and understanding someone is not easy, but these two, one day, will open up a new challenge for two people to face. In the comedy and fantasy play, "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by William Shakespeare, it is evident that honesty and empathy are the qualities that make up true friendship. Through the character Hermia, she shares her real thoughts and empathize with her friend no matter what situation they are in, however, it is also evident that being too truthful and empathize with others can cause betrayal in friendship. First, Hermia demonstrates her trait of honesty towards her best friend, Helena, though there is conflict going on between them. Provided that they have been friends for quite long, they have enough trust in each other, and can share even their deepest secret. In particular, Hermia expresses her real feelings about Helena's beloved, Demetrius, without hiding anything. But Hermia, by all means, does not mean to hurt Helena's feelings,"I frown upon him, yet he loves me still... I give him curses, yet he gives me love... The more I hate, the more follows me... His folly, Helena, is no fault of mine"(1.1.193-200). Indeed, it takes time and courage to express ones own feelings in front of others. Plus, it is even harder to express the feelings about someone that his/her best friend loves, while they do not. As in this play, even Demetrius is Helena's beloved, Hermia still expresses all her feeling to Helena, …show more content…

Friendship offers numerous blessings that enrich life. A good friend makes happy days brighter and sad days more tolerable by demonstrating loyalty, optimism, and a spirit of adventure. Loyalty is staying faithful to a friend through both good and bad times. Optimism is looking on the bright side no matter how bad the situation may be. An adventurous spirit is being willing to take risks and try new things.
In the play A Midsummer’s Night Dream by William Shakespeare, many of the characters relentlessly pursue their goals in the face of illogical decisions, and, while fictional items such as the “love-in-idleness” flower are used to explain the character’s sudden love for each other, the play does illustrate how love and ambition can lead to unforeseen consequences. For example, when Puck accidently anointed Lysander’s eyes with the “love-in-idleness” juice, he started a chain of events leading to Lysander and Demetrius fighting over Helena while Hermia is treated as though she is worthless. Moreover, at one point, Lysander and Demetrius even threatened to duel each other when Lysander awoke after being anointed with the flower 's juice and said, "Where is Demetrius? O, how fit a word is that vile name to perish on my sword" (61). This shows how the character’s love for certain other characters, and their ambition to pursue said love, can lead to the destruction of previous relationships and lead them to make dangerous decisions.
This is an example of the perils of excessive loyalty. In the play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare warns about the dangers of extreme loyalty through the behavior of Romeo and Juliet. Juliet is one of the most faithful characters in the play, and also the most tragic, which is Shakespeare’s way of showing the dangers of acute loyalty. When Juliet visits Friar Lawrence after she fights with her parents, she says all the things she’d rather do than
As well as Helena, Faye is also quite young, since she is in her 20s and she is also very beautiful just like Helena. Faye has a partner that wants nothing but the best for her, and to care for her in all her needs. Extremely caring for Faye in anyhow as well as supportive, and Faye knows it, and she appreciates him very dearly. However she hides a secret from him, an important secret that could tear his heart apart for her hiding the truth from him. Small minded like Helena she retained from telling him the truth, because she had failed to figure out the perfect way to tell him the truth without him walking away from her.
Friendship is based on mutual respect and trust. When a friendship is betrayed it is one of the worst feelings that people can experience. Friendships that last from childhood through old age are some of the best in the world. Friendships that come about in times of adversity can be even more important as the people suffering the adversity have no one else who understands their situation as well and that creates an incredibly strong bond. When people, who have experienced these types of friendships, are betrayed after having been so close for so long or in extreme circumstances, the betrayal seems all the more horrible.
In our scene, lines 42-179 of Act One, Scene One, the characters who try to force love upon others are seen antagonistically, while Hermia and Lysander, who strive for true, naturally occurring love, are seen as protagonists whose love should be defended. The overlying message of the play is that love should not and cannot be forced. Theseus, Egeus, and Demetrius use their power, both as nobles and men, to try and force Hermia into marrying Demetrius. Egeus, in an attempt to bully Hermia into marrying Demetrius says, ‘‘‘She is mine, and all my right of her I do estate unto Demetrius’’’ (1.1.97-98). He sees his power as Hermia’s father as a way to force her into a marriage that will benefit him.
“A true friend accepts who you are and helps you become who you should be.” Steve and Nathaniel proved that friendship and happiness can be real in the novel The Soloist by Steve Lopez. The way friendship is portrayed in the novel is unexpected in such a way that we don’t see it happen often in our daily life. It is important to our society because finding a true friend is really difficult to find. True friendship is hard to find now in days because we expect many things in return from other people.
In his play, Twelfth Night, William Shakespeare has his characters participate in the practice of deception and dishonesty of others - after all, the foundation of Shakespeare’s play resides within a lie. One of the major deceptions in the play is executed by the Illyrian countess, Olivia, as she repeatedly claims to need solitude to mourn her brother’s death in order to avoid Duke Orsino and his obsession towards her. This deception contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole by adding the thematic message, deception and dishonesty is sometimes the better option when it comes to love. From the beginning of the play, Olivia is introduced as the grieving countess that has recently lost a brother.
Toba Beta once said: "“Justice could be as blind as love.” Shakespeare 's play A Midsummer Night 's Dream captures the blind bias of both love and justice. Egeus, a respected nobleman in Athens, arranged for his daughter, Hermia, to marry nobleman Demetrius. Egeus tells his daughter that she must obey his wishes: if she does not, she can either choose to become a nun, or die. Hermia, much to her father 's dismay, is deeply in a mutual love with a different nobleman, Lysander.
In A Midsummer’s Night Dream, Shakespeare let the readers to explore his imagination and bring them to fantasies. A Midsummer Night’s Dream implies a world of imagination, illusion and unconsciousness through the word ‘dreams’. In the last scene of the play, act V scene I, the audience experience there is different thought of Theseus and Hippolyta in interpreting the love stories of Hermia, Lysander, Helena, Demetrius and the imaginations of many other characters. The scene of Theseus talking to Hippolyta lead to a controversy about the value of imagination and reason. From the play, the audience indeed witnesses magical incidents in the fairies’ forest, where the fairy king and queen, Oberon and Titania, rule over the natural processes.
Intro Hook If love is magical, can love be created be magic? Is love created through a magical love potion as strong as genuine affection? How powerful is this illusion of magic, and will it withstand the reality of day? In A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, by William Shakespeare, the lovers of Hermia, Helena, Demetrius and Lysander experience both real love and dream-like infatuation.
Shakespeare uses honesty and truth within the characters, including Cordelia, Edgar, Kent and others to push his messages throughout the entirety of this story. The talented author uses honesty and truth in his stories to push his message that humanity would accept a comforting lie rather than a dreadful and harmful truth. To begin, as stated before, Cordelia is one of the most
In the performance, A Midsummer Night Dream, I play Helena in the scene when they fight. In this scene, Helena and Hermia have a fight over Demetrius and Lysander. Hermia thinks Helena stole Lysander from her when actually Lysander is under a spell. They fight and argue with each other over small things like their height and then bigger things like their friendship. When I play Helena I need to play her as someone who is persistent to go to Athens but she has multiple obstacles in her way such as her friend Hermia.
/ O, then, what graces in my love do dwell / That he hath turn'd a heaven unto a hell!'” which is a quote stated by Hermia; I think this quote is discussing what she think may happen to her if she follows her heart to marry Lysander she is unsure whether she will go to heaven or hell for the disobedient actions she has taken. So as you can see the love/hate triangle going on is very somewhat “Out of whack” There’s not much good coming out of how they feel about each other, definitely not a kind of relationship that I would enjoy getting deep into reading about, but I have to be honest this is a story filled with very eager and brave women who will go after what they want with no problem or scarce in their hearts(Sounds exactly like me)!
Shakespeare’s renowned play Twelfth Night centers around love, both in platonic and romantic instances. Characters display elements of self, brotherly, amorous, and friendly love towards one another; however, of the relationships portrayed, the strongest ones are those between men. In contrast, relationships between men and women lack depth and sincerity due to the lapse of communication between the opposing genders. Men are able to express their feelings to one another more freely, which gives their bonds strength that heterosexual relationships fail to display.
