The “Trust-Busting” Progressive President In the late 19th century, the idea of progressivism began to emerge from rapid industrialization and urbanization. Muckrakers and other progressive citizens created a hunger for truth after exposing scandals and corruption within healthcare, politics, and businesses. The people of this era responded to the economic, social, and political problems that arose. Progressive presidents were elected to office to create change in America. None of those presidents, however, were nearly as progressive as Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt’s personal life shaped him into the progressive president he was. His childhood illnesses were thought to give him a life expectancy of five years, but after extensive physical training, Roosevelt was more than healthy (Theodore Roosevelt). For example he helped the farmers by telling them to let the government tell them what to grow and then they could receive government benefits. He also described the new deal as a “call to arms”. “The Progressive movement of 1901 to 1971 was a triumph of conservatism rather than a victory for liberalism,” is a false statement implying that the Progressive movement was not liberal win when it very much was. The progressive movement allowed for all types of government reforms and policies that are all very liberal in a sense. With the Progressives, the laissez-faire government that allowed for many businesses to run free will no longer exist and regulations of all kinds of business will be put into place. The three presidents to reside in the White House during this era, Theodore Roosevelt, William H. Taft, and Woodrow Wilson, all shared at least one point of view with liberals. During the Progressive Movement we had 3 presidents, Teddy Roosevelt, William Taft, and Woodrow Wilson. Each of these presidents had some very good reforms that have made this country be how it is today. All of these things that presidents have done tie in with a goal of the Progressive Movement, there were 4 goals. One- Social Welfare, Two- Economic Reform, Three- Moral Improvement, and Four- Fostering Efficiency. These goals were accomplished in many ways.

In September of 1901 President William McKinley was assassinated and Theodore Roosevelt became president. President Roosevelt invoked the Sherman Antitrust Act, which went against the Northern Securities Company, which was a railroad company, and the Supreme Court ordered the company to dissolve. Many of his actions showed his independence from big business. Roosevelt was reelected on the “square deal”. Many of the Progressive reforms came from the Populist program, but populism failed because it was a rural protest.
