While the two short stories "A&P," by John Updike and "Barn Burning," by William Faulkner are both coming to age stories, but consist of different story lines, the protagonist in each story (Sammy and Sarty) stand up for what they believe in. These two stories have many similarities and many differences. In "A&P", Sammy is around nineteen years of age, works as a cash register at the towns local grocery store named A&P, and his life looks like it is going well, until three girls walk in with just their swimsuits. Lengel, the manager notices the girls and calls them out for their choice of clothing. Sammy being who he is decides to stand up for the girls, but he does not just defend them he quits his job also.

Symbolism is a notable feature in Catching Fire. Through symbolism , Suzanne Collins manages to paint Katniss as the ultimate embodiment of rebellion through transferring her into a mockingjay . " A mockingjay is a creature the Capitol never intended to exist"(92), as it is a result of the Capitol's usage of the japperjays which were sent to spy on the rebels. However, the japperjays failed in their mission so the Capitol left them to die ,but they managed to survive through mating to female mockingbirds . This proves that the existence of the mockingjays is an act of rebellion in itself , an act of defiance excuted by the Capitol's own invention , long before Katniss has been born. .

Everyone is raised differently from the minute they are born. These differences range from small to extreme actions. There are little things like learning how to read or bigger things like being raised to believe in a higher power. Some children are disciplined by word or with a physical action. Everything varies from the very start.

The Short Story ‘To Build a Fire ‘by. Jack London is about man vs. nature. The story takes place in Yukon, Canada, east of Alaska. It’s so cold your spilt is ice before it hits the ground. Temperature from 25degress to -75 it can cause your flesh to freeze.

They all acted the same being all angry at each other. He really shows the readers how bad a family can really feel for these characters from what they showed they felt how they felt. Faulkner also uses perspective to help tell his stories. This comes being shown out through his main characters in helping to tell those stories.

That's why some people don't agree with using prescribed fires. Even though they sometimes don't work, they can be really helpful when they do work.

Barn Burning is a modern story that shows a theme, plot, characters and uses narrative techniques. The title of the story, “Barn Burning,” is used to identify the main method carried out by the father in the story, Abner to get revenge on the people he grew angry with for their treatment of black people in the south. The story does not give a number of the barns Abner had burned, but Sarty said they had moved a lot of different times indicating the moves were due to Abner destroying the property of others. Abner seemed to have a sickness or craving for burning property; this seemed his way of regaining his dignity or self-respect after feeling he was wronged by the evil, hate, and racism of southern society. Abner kept burning fuel handy and had containers to refill when it was time to burn another barn and caused destruction, but when it was time to keep his family warm in the cold outdoors, he would only build small fires.

Abner Snopes and Montresor; Two Villainous Characters with Two Different Endings What is a villain? A villain can be defined as an evil character in a story that tends to have a negative effect on the other characters in the story. They are typically cruel and malicious and often consumed with a ruthless conviction to carry out a certain wickedness or crime. Sometimes they may be portrayed as having some redeeming quality but, at the end of the day part of being a truly great and heinous villain is doing something that most people would never dream of doing. In William Faulkner’s “Barn Burning” and Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” we are introduced to two villainous characters, Abner Snopes and Montresor.

Growing up causes people to lose their innocence. When people are young, most think the world is a happy place that’s all sunshine and rainbows but when people grow up, they are faced with taxes and careers. In Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451, Montag meets someone who fills him with questions to the point where he sees that what he was living in wasn’t right. The same goes for Pleasantville and The Wood written by Bobulski. Both stories experience a change that makes the characters see everything in a different light.

In the stories, "The Lie," by Kurt Vonnegut and "Barn Burning," by William Faulkner, the main characters, Eli Remenzel & Colonel Sartoris (Sarty) Snopes, both mature from childhood into adulthood. This growth and maturity develops from having family support and a stable upbringing or perhaps their growth happened within their own self-consciousness. The main characters, in both these stories, use their inner maturity to be strong and courageous and make good decisions as they are growing up. In the story, "The Lie," Eli matures into adulthood.

Argumentative Essay In “To Build a Fire,” the story of an unnamed man traveling along the Yukon Trail with a dog is told. Throughout the story, the man’s death is foreshadowed. The husky that he is traveling with has a natural instinct and understands, seemingly more than the man, that traveling the Yukon Trail in the freezing cold temperatures is extremely dangerous. The man soon learns how cold it is when he spits.

In William Faulkner’s story “Barn Burning”, the reader sees a young boy who struggles with his relationship with his father Abner Snopes. Sarty, the young boy, knows what his father has done is wrong. Because of this he is stuck in between being faithful to his father and family and telling the truth about what his father has done. As the story progresses it is easy for readers to see him struggle more and more with trying to keep his father’s actions a secret. He begins to think about himself and the consequences he could face for what Abner is doing.
