Macbeth is seen as a war hero and his actions are said to have changed the tide of the war in Scotland’s favor. Macbeth is shown to be Ambitious, Remorseful, and filled with fear. Throughout the play, Macbeth’s actions are being controlled by the emotions of greed, fear, and remorseful.
Macbeth is ambitious because of his decision to kill Duncan and how he hired murderers to kill Banquo and Fleance. In the play, Macbeth says, “ Here I go, and it will be done; the bell invites me to do it”(Shakespeare 2.1. 63). Macbeth speaks these words moments before going to Duncan’s room to murder him, showing that he is ready and prepared for what he is going to do to become Scotland’s King. Later on in the play, Macbeth hires murderers to kill Banquo and his son Fleance. Macbeth is trying to clear the obstacles that could withhold him from kingship by killing the only other person that was mentioned in the prophecy. The witches said that Banquo will be the father of kings, which made Macbeth uneasy about his continuous rule over Scotland. In conclusion, Macbeth having the heart to kill two of his close friends for the throne shows how he has
Macbeth by Shakespeare takes place in medieval Scotland during a war with Norway where Macbeth, a war hero, is approached by some witches that give him a prophecy of his future as king. Despite his confusion, Macbeth is enticed by their words and begins his plan to bring the prophecy to reality. Throughout the play, Macbeth’s actions are controlled by the emotions of greed, fear, and jealousy. "Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed. " - Mahatma Gandhi.
To start, Macbeth shows greed many times throughout the play, he kills just so he can get what he wants. The text states, “ Both of you know Banquo was your enemy” ( Shakespeare 3.1.113b-114a). This quote from the play shows how Macbeth lied to the murderers so that they would kill Banquo. Macbeth wanted Banquo killed because he thought that he would be a threat towards Macbeth becoming king. To add, Macbeth killed Duncan out of greed solely because he wanted to be king.
Macbeth states, “I go, and it is done” (2.1.63). His greed is so strong he cannot stop himself from wanting to be kind, choses to do wrong, and kills Duncan. Again struggling between choosing right and wrong, his evil subconscious overpowers his facade. After the wrongdoing, he still goes on to killing Banquo, without anyone telling him to do so. He is so sure he is going to be king, he hires three murderers to get the job done, telling them,
After murdering King Duncan he realizes that he is just one step closer to the crown. As a result, he has the desire to kill anyone who stands in his way of him getting the throne. Banquo stands in his way as he knows that King Duncan needed to killed. In this case, Macbeth hires murderers to kill Banquo and his son Fleance. He tells the murderers, “To leave no rubs nor botches in the work /
In those days, kings would murder even their own families to maintain their position of authority. Macbeth gives the command to kill his best buddy. Why? Since the witches foretold that his sons would rule as kings. Another instance of Macbeth seeking to influence the future is his effort to kill Macduff after hearing the second round of witches' prophecies.
Readers of Macbeth can look at him from different perspectives; a troubled man who fell to the dark side, or an arrogant, power hungry man who got what he deserved at the end. Macbeth by William Shakespeare tells the story about a man who was so desperate for power that he was willing to do anything to keep it. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth is considered a war hero and along with his then friend, Banquo, is called upon by three witches who tell him he will be the next king. His wife, Lady Macbeth, is a power hungry figure who convinces him to kill King Duncan, to fulfill his prophecies.
As individuals, we have a certain degree of control over our own lives and the decisions we make. While external factors such as social pressure, cultural norms, and personal circumstances can influence us, ultimately, we have agency in choosing how we respond to those factors. This is portrayed through William Shakespeare's tragedy, Macbeth, the titular character Macbeth is the protagonist, a Scottish general who receives a prophecy from three witches that he will become king. Consumed by ambition and spurred on by his wife, Lady Macbeth, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the throne for himself. However, his guilt and paranoia lead him to commit more murders in order to maintain his power, and he becomes increasingly tyrannical as his
The Tragedy of Macbeth is a well known story that revolves around the word “ambition” but this ambition isn’t always self driven by someone, but rather through the influence of someone else who maintains control of the situation. The story is about a man whose desire to be the king and have power leads to the murders of those who might stand in his way. Throughout the story we see many characters who play major parts in how one event follows another, and how some characters seem to completely have control of the events in the story. Although in Macbeth the Three Sisters and Macbeth exhibit some control over the events, Lady Macbeth has the most responsibility.
In the next scene, Macbeth and his wife execute their murder plot and temporarily escape any suspicion that they are the culprits. This murder showcases Macbeth’s greed as he was aware of the positive reputation that King Duncan had in Scotland, but murdered him anyway to eliminate anyone that stood in the way of the throne. Next, Macbeth sets out to murder his former best friend Banquo and his son Fleance as the prophecies revealed that Banquo’s sons would ascend to the throne. “So is he mine; and in such bloody distance, That every minute of his being thrusts Against my near'st of life.” (Shakespeare 25)
The Tragedy of Macbeth is a play by William Shakespeare set in Scotland about a murderous and vehement king who spirals on a path of destruction as he suffers from the consequences of determining his own fate. The predominant theme portrayed throughout the play is honor vs. loyalty. This is represented through the identification, actions, and quotes of numerous characters. To introduce the theme of honor vs. disloyalty, the characters Banquo and Macbeth exemplify traits that are equivalent with the moral of the story.
Macbeth needs to follow through with this plan because Fleance and Banquo could get in the way of Macbeth becoming King. The three witches had also foretold Banquo’s descendants to become king. Macbeth sends men to follow through with this plan. They succeed to kill Banquo, but Fleance escapes. After being responsible for the deaths of two people, Duncan and Banquo, Macbeth is in a state where he feels the need to keep murdering people that could possibly get in his way of becoming king.
After achieving the title of the King of Scotland, Macbeth wants to secure his position as the king and desires to inherit the Scottish throne to his ancestors. His aim was showed in “To be thus is nothing, /But to be safely thus” (III, i, 52-3). This quote reveals that Macbeth not only wanted to become the king but also wants to secure his position as the King of Scotland for the welfare of his upcoming generation. This reveals Macbeth’s is implying the witches’ prophecies; as long Banquo’s sons live, Macbeth’s throne would not be able to inherit down to his ancestors. As the play progresses, Macbeth’s hires murderers to kill Banquo and his son, Fleance, as represented through, “Banquo, thy soul’s flight, /If
The audience can now see his desires as well as his ambition. At this point, Macbeth is still hesitant of revealing his true nature, but the audience gets a peek of what he yearns for. In addition, the witches’ predictions are known to be paradoxical, their predictions are never straightforward; they tend to have different interpretations. Macbeth kills King Duncan to obtain the power he was told he’d get. Despite that, the witches never said to kill King Duncan; they told him he would become king.
The first Act opens up with Macbeth defeating the army of Norway. To the people of Scotland Macbeth was seen as a great soldier and they treated him as a hero. The king thought very highly of Macbeth because of his part in the war. He even named him the new Thane of Cawdor.
