In the essay I created about Umuofia having both civilized and uncivilized attributes, my strength, includes a complex thesis, and my weakness, includes use of passive voice, illustrated my various developments in essay writing. The strength that I exhibited in my essay was a complex thesis. The improvement in my theses can be seen in my most recent thesis from the essay about Umuofia. The thesis was filled with rich vocabulary and strong language in order to convey my opinion with correct examples. This differs greatly from some of my first theses of the year, which lacked strong vocab, and were weaker than they are now. The theses from the beginning, were not well developed, and had shaky reasoning. In contrast, a weakness that I exhibited was the use of passive voice. Throughout my essay, “be verbs” and other aspects of passive voice were seen. I consistently used “be verbs” like is, was, were,etc. seen in the following, “One prominent uncivilized quality seen in the society is the brutal war traditions. “. I have gotten better at using less passive voice, but there is still a large amount of passive voice in my essay. The piece of writing I am using for my rhetorical analysis is Mother Tongue by the famous author Amy Tan. Amy Tan is the author of such books as The Joy Luck Club. Mother Tongue was originally published in 1990 by the Sandra Dijsktra Literary Agency. Then was reprinted in Everything is an Argument with readings, by Lunsford, Ruszkiewicz, and Walters. This paper was probably one of the hardest paper I had to write just because I felt like I was on my own. I was scared at first but i felt like this helped me learn how to properly look and analyze a speech or a writing in general. One way this helped was I highlighted what I thought was a rhetorical device and I had to properly analyze it and see what he/ she is trying to accomplish through his or her writing.

What makes a piece of writing effective? A piece of writing includes many things that make it effective, such as the style that appeals to the reader and rhetorical devices used in the writing that make it much more interesting. In chapter 8, Graff talks about the strategies to connect each part of essay to create a complete expression. He emphasizes that connecting between sentences and sentences or phrases and phrases is important because it helps the readers clearly and obviously understand the writer’s thinking process, then obtain the writer’s purpose of writing. To create the connection, Graff mentions four strategies, containing to use transition word, to use pointing words, to repeat key team and phrase, and to repeat writer’s ideas in different methods. Chapter 9 is about properly transform formal and unformal writing style in the academic writing. Graff first confirms the importance in using formal language, vocabulary in academic writing.

Females had to deal with having their thoughts or opinions not important. “There were many women, but they looked on from the fringe like outsiders” (Achebe 87).
Throughout this essay I will be explaining the gender roles, comparing them and how they affect the Umuofian society. In the Umuofian society, Women and men have different roles and expectations to live up to, men were believed to be superior and that women were inferior.
