“Things Fall Apart”, a novel written by Chinua Achebe about Africa through the character Okonkwo, a man who Achebe uses to illustrate the complexity Igbo culture, contrary to what the Europeans portrayed Africa as. One main focus of the book is to counter the single story, which is the idea that an area is represented by one story, similar to a stereotype. However, differing from a stereotype a single story often completely misrepresents something, and in this case Africa. Europeans had been the only ones writing about Africa, describing all the culture as problematic for being different, rather than looking at what African culture really is. Achebe was one of the first to write about African culture for westerners to read about, making Things Fall Apart a true innovation in writing.
He is comparable to Nathan in The Poisonwood Bible because he is unable to adjust to the new culture. He is a strong headed Native American who believes that his chi controlled his destiny. At the first of the book Okonkwo thought, "When a man says yes, his chi says yes also. " He was a hard worker driven by the fear of becoming like his lazy, shameful father.

Out of all of his children, at least he takes much pride in one of them; that’s something that he never gets himself from his father while he grows up. In contrast to this softer behavior, Okonkwo is also a strong man. He is one of the greatest wrestlers in all of the villages when it comes to his physical strength. Not only that, he is mentally strong as well. He is able to do things that most men believe to be unthinkable; he displays all of the characteristics needed in an ideal warrior.
The story “Things Fall Apart” tells about a young man named Okonkwo who had personal achievements. Okonkwo was a young man of his village and brought great honor to his village by throwing Amalize the great cat, which was a great wrestler who for seven years was unbeaten , from Umuofia to Mbaino. Amalinze was called the “cat” because his back never touched the grown. Unoka which is Okonkwo’s father died ten years ago page 4 says that in his day he was lazy and improvident.
Achbe created the character of okonkwo in the template of a european hero to show Europeans that Africans aren’t so different from them. Okonkwo often has struggles with his oldest son, Nwoye. This theme of father/son struggles may have been strange to native Africans but to Europeans it was commonplace. One specific example can be found in Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare’s most famous work, it could be argued, focuses entirely around a father/son struggle not too different from that of Okonkwo and Nwoye; the son who wants to go his own way and be his own person (by marrying who he chooses) and the father who forbids it, ending with the ultimate falling out in the death of Romeo.
