While John Quincy Adams was in office, the 363 mile - long Erie Canal is completed from Lake Erie to New York City, linking the Atlantic and trans-Atlantic markets with the growing agricultural production in the Northwest states. They began the construction of the Erie Canal in 1817. Adams had strongly supported the national planning of and the use of national funds for an improved transportation foundation. Thomas Jefferson was a major leader of our country. He was the third president of the Uninted States, and one of the Founding Fathers. Jefferson was a president who was loved by the public. He was influential in his leadership over the nation, and majorly impacted American history. Thomas Jefferson influenced the nation by being a Founding Father, hostility of a strong government, and creating the fundamental principles of self government.

The history of the United States was heavily influenced by several bright and intelligent individuals. One of these people were Thomas Jefferson. In elementary school, you probably don’t learn much about him, but once you get to middle and high school your teachers will get into more depth about who he was and what he did to make America a better place to live in. Once you get to know more and more about him the story of his life begins to unfold, and you begin to see the side of him that most don’t know about. Most people know him as the writer of The Declaration of Independence, the 3rd President of the United States and a founding father.

John Adams (October 30, 1735 – July 4, 1826) went on to become the second President of the United States after losing the first two elections. He did garner the second most votes in the first quadrennial election which resulted in him serving as the first vice president of the United States. Washington garnered sixty nine electoral votes to John Adams’ thirty four votes. One of America’s Founding Fathers, Adams assisted Thomas Jefferson in drafting the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Weeks before Jon Adams’ term as president of the United States was coming to an end, he signed the Judiciary Act of 1801. This act was Adams’ way of altering and reorganizing the Supreme Court in his favor before leaving office. With this act, he appointed sixteen circuit judges and forty-two Federalist justices. These justices were called midnight judges because they were appointed up until the last hour of Adam’s presidency, which ended March 4, 1801. He did this as a last-minute effort to ensure that members of his political party would have powerful positions in government.

Long ago, during a revolutionary era when the country and the name of the United States even became official, there existed a group of colonists, and freedom-fighters alike, who sought to change a nation for the greater good. Most of these men, women, and children (a majority of the participants were men) came from European countries such as Great Britain, while the rest branched from other countries such as France, the Netherlands, Spain, and elsewhere. Although many of these people diverged from different backgrounds, all of these adventurous newcomers still shared the same exact vision in mind – they all wanted to establish a new home in the new world (America), and they all desired to obtain freedom and gain access to individual rights. But in order to accomplish all of that, they needed someone, or something, that was knowledgeable and powerful enough to give the American people what they truly needed and deserved.

Born on April 13, 1743, in Shadwell, Virginia, Thomas Jefferson was a man of incredible talents who is remembered today as one of the most influential individuals in American History. Jefferson was elected in 1800 as the third president of the young United States, and throughout his historic presidency, allowed himself to be guided through his own distinct philosophy of government known as Jeffersonianism. A staunch supporter of state’s rights and a limited central government, Jefferson believed that the virtuous and educated farmer formed the backbone to democracy. Jefferson despised the moral depravity that he believed accompanied the big cities and luxurious jobs, and stated that when people “get piled up upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, they will become corrupt as in Europe” (Boyer et al. 225). In addition, Jefferson was a slave owner and believed that the white race should be held superior over the inferior black population.

Jefferson wrote many influential pieces of literature which pushed the concept of having limited government power. Jefferson wanted America not to be like the European monarchies that fell due to religious strife, so he emphasized a secular government. Jefferson, following closely with the ideas of John Locke, stressed the importance of the protection of individual rights against the government.
