To Kill a Mockingbird Essay In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” there were many heartbreaking and confusing events. This book took place in Alabama during the great depression of the 1930s. Harper Lee exemplifies many phases of courage. Lee demonstrates many diverse characters defining their courage throughout the book.

Though the residents of Maycomb, Alabama were quick to judge their African American counterparts, Scout’s father, Atticus, knew better than to agree with them. Although Scout was curious about the truth behind her classmates harsh words, she quickly disregarded their meaning after digesting her father’s advice and began to form her own mature beliefs and thoughts about race at an unusually young age. Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird shows how Jem, Scout and Boo overcome their loss of innocence and overcome the struggles that Maycomb county and its people throw at them. While Jem, Scout, are just rudimentary kids they face some real world problems and they witness some of the harsh ways people did things but witnessing those things and hearing all the judgemental people is also a detriment to their innocence.

Atticus knows what it is like for people not the same as everyone else to get treated differently, so he is trying to teach Scout the right way. He showed great integrity as well because he did not care about getting attention, he just wants to do the right thing. Since things have just always been that way and the racism never directly affects her she is mostly unaware of it. She wonders why Calpurnia uses the front door when the rabid dog comes down the road because she has just always used the back entrance and doesnt recognize why or that it is disrespectful.

It is filled with craft moves that support the goals that Lee makes the reader aware of throughout the story. To Kill A Mockingbird is about the struggles of dealing with a court case supporting a black man, Tom Robinson, through the eyes of a young girl, Scout Finch. Scout lives with her father Atticus in a small home in Maycomb County, Alabama. She goes through many internal struggles throughout the story that she learns to deal with.

Scout was surrounded by people that forced to learn many crucial life lessons and help her mature into a respectable lady. In the beginning of the novel, Jem and Scout were two innocent kids playing in the summer sun, until school came along.
