Ignorance
Ignorance is a recurrent problem presented in today’s world. People tend to believe that they are be all, know all. Yet they often forget that one can always obtain more knowledge. Ignorance shall block someone from seeing reality as it really is and steer them in the direction of their own opinionated points of view. Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, emphasizes the innate ignorance in the people of Maycomb through their attitude towards other people shown throughout the story.

Many end up standing behind Atticus and his decisions. People bring gifts to their house to show their respect for him defending Tom and forgetting ignorance. But at the same time, there are still some people that are against him. Bob Ewell will not forgive Atticus for the trial and threatens him in every way possible. Atticus still views all people in the same way he always has. In the trial he called out many people in the room for their ignorance. “‘Confident that you gentlemen would go along with them on the assumption--the evil assumption--that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women, an assumption one associates with minds of their caliber’” (Lee 204). Jem and Scout have both learned a vast amount of lessons in ignorance throughout the novel. Both can still be ignorant in their ways but have matured enough to learn to rise against it. Afterall, “Real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s ignorance” (Confucius).
Altogether, To Kill a Mockingbird relates well with today’s society. People today are completely staid in their own ignorant views and most are unwilling to change them. Today’s problems are usually based upon politics, which relates to the novel in the idea of race. Such as when they talk about Boo Radley being dead, “Besides, I don’t think he’s still there. He died years ago and they stuffed him up the chimney.” This dismissal of the possibility that they might feel shame for their actions reflects the theme of ignorance to a tee. The apparent incapability to feel shame is apparent in them when they continue the game in front of all the neighbors, save Nathan Radley.
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the angry mob in chapter 15 is fueled by an absurd amount of ignorance and righteousness. Ignorance is the lack of knowledge or information and righteousness is the right of being morally right or justifiable. The angry mob’s ignorance is driven by racism and prejudice. The men believe that they are right and that they are protecting their community, but nobody sits and questions who is really right in the situation. People believe Tom Robinson committed a serious crime because he is black.
In the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” there are numerous coming-of-age events with Jem and Scout, who are brother and sister. Scout is a different type of girl, she wears clothes that make her look like a tomboy, has her hair cut short to her shoulders and is innocent and naive. Jem is a boy who is starting to spark an interest in things such as football and guns. Scout and Jem grow up in a time of racial discrimination and segregation in Maycomb, Alabama. Yet, have a father who shows them a disparate perspective of thinking.
Examples of defying unfair social norms can be seen throughout history in times of inequality, such as the speaking out against the Jim Crow laws, or speaking for immigrant rights. Things change because of people who, like Miss Maudie, and Atticus, set a spark which will most likely influence future generations, in this case Scout and Jem, to take action for inequality and other issues, and challenge them to defy narrow-minded social norms. Scout being influenced by Atticus and Miss Maudie shaped who she is as a person. If the setting was different however, such as in the 1700s-1800s, when slavery was still legal, Scout may have grown up very differently from the To Kill A Mockingbird, counterpart, mostly more racist, and more white
Every day we go about our lives. We make choices, make decisions but do we ever really think about if the choice we make is the right thing to do? Atticus is the answer to what we should do. Atticus shows the importance of making the right choice no matter what. This is shown through the actions of Atticus both in and outside of the trial.

The novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” was written in 1960 by Harper Lee in the point of view of a young innocent girl named Scout. In the book, Harper describes how difficult it can be to believe the evil in the world because it’s like a sickness: you can’t tell who’s sick, unless they show you signs of their symptoms. In the book, Atticus always looked at good in everyone, no matter what color they were or class. He never liked when people took advantage of others, or when their own kids, Scout and Jem discriminated others or used racist slang.

The people in this town are very judgemental and of each other and it often leads to people being labeled with stereotypes and people think they know everything about that person however that is not reality. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem, and Scout are two growing children navigating life in the 1930’s in racist Alabama. They see racism throughout their town and have to navigate how they want to live their lives or follow their town. September begins and Dill leaves Maycomb to go back to the town of Meridian. Scout feels sad but is excited to go to school for the first time. She has been longing to go to school and in the past would spy on the school children through a telescope. However, on her first day of school she gets assigned to Miss Caroline Fisher who is unaware of the Maycomb customs because she is from north Alabama. Miss Caroline Fisher is not very pleasant with the children and becomes extremely upset with Scout when she learns that Atticus has taught Scout to read.
