Tom Robinson Trial Report

This evidence shows that Mayella had all the bruises on the right side of her body which means Tom Robinson would have to use his left arm, but his left arm was useless because he got it caught in a cotton gin. BASIS OF GUILT On November 21, 1935, Tom Robinson was accused of beating and raping Mayella Ewell because Sheriff Heck Tate had a poor investigation of the case.

Atticus Finch, the best lawyer in Maycomb, was sitting nervously in his chair as he waited for the town Judge to arrive in court. Tom Robinson, Atticus’s client, was scared of being proved guilty of raping Mayella ,and also beating her. As the judge came in the courtroom, you could feel how tense it was between the two defendants. The judge sat down and started talking to both of them.

In the book, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson has been accused of raping Mayella Ewell. He is well known for being a Christian man, but Mr. Ewell claims he saw him raping his daughter. I believe Tom Robinson is innocent because of the Ewell family history, lack of evidence, and he has a disability that causes a problem with the testimony. The Ewell family is nowhere near perfect. Mr. Bob Ewell is known for his violent actions and words.

THE INTRODUCTION Good morning, my name is Braden Hoheisel, and it is my pleasure to represent the State of Maycomb and to serve as prosecutor in this life-changing case. On August 26, 1936 Mr. Gilmer harassed and disrespected Tom Robison in his court trial. He made false statements about stuff not related to the case and called Tom names. At the conclusion of this case, we hope that after you have heard all the evidence that you will choose the verdict of guilty on this case and the charges of harassment and lying.

This past week has been rough for the Robinson family. After a racist jury choose to make an innocent man guilty things went from bad to worse. Atticus Finch was chosen to defend Tom Robinson. This particular case was against Mayella Ewell, a white woman. As a black man Tom was already at a disadvantage.

The town of Maycomb, Alabama recently experienced a controversial and historical trial on the case of Tom Robinson, an African American man, being accused of raping and assaulting 19 year old Mayella Ewell. Many people from all over packed into the Maycomb courthouse to see the verdict of this case. Tom Robinson was defended by Mr. Atticus Finch, while Mr. Wilmer Gilmer was Miss Ewell’s attorney for this case. Mr. Finch provided strong evidence that Mr. Robinson did not perpetrate this crime. However, Mr. Robinson was unanimously proven guilty and sentenced to the electric chair to be killed as a punishment for this said crime.

Tom Robinson is discriminated against just because of the color of his skin. In the book, he is accused of raping Mayella Ewell by Bob Ewell. In court, Bob Ewell says “‘...Mayella was raisin’ this holy racket so I dropped m’load and run as fast as I could but I run into

In the part two of the book, Tom Robinson, a black man is accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. The social norm of this time was to respect whites, and treat blacks differing. Therefore, it was a sin for Tom to disrespect Mayella. Atticus Finch, a lawyer and respected white man fought for Tom and bravely tried as his lawyer. On trial, there was evidence that Bob Ewell, Mayella’s father beat, and raped her.

In Atticus’ closing argument, the prejudice against Tom Robinson is that he is black, and that any crime that he commits thus must be true, “ the evil assumption - that all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings…” (Lee).This affects the possibility of Atticus proving Robinson not guilty because of the prejudice that everyone in the courtroom has against him. The case is revolving around that Tom Robinson is accused of beating and raping Mayella Ewell, the counterargument that Atticus presents shows that Mayella was beaten with the left hand, but Tom Robinson is only capable of using his right hand because his left hand was caught in a cotton gin completely disabling it. Atticus incorporates the use of both logical and emotional appeals in his speech to convince the courtroom that Robinson is not a guilty man. Atticus shoots all the evidence he has at the courtroom and tells them, “In the name of God, do your duty,” (Lee).

’”(pg 187). This evidence shows that Mayella had nothing to say because she knew that she was caught lying and he showed the jury that they were lying. Therefore the Ewell family is not telling the truth in every response and is more likely Tom is not

Tom was accused of raping a white woman who was Mayella Ewell, Mayella said he raped her while he was helping her with chores. She later on tells the readers that it was false allegations. The reason why she didn 't tell the truth at her first trial was because, Mayella was afraid of being embarrassed because she kissed a black male. She rather have an innocent man get charged with a crime than that. “However, Robinson was transferred from the state prison to Maycomb 's county jail on Saturday, two days before he stood trial on Monday, and Atticus had to defend him against a lynch mob”.

Tom Robinson on the other hand, is a man with dignity and speaks to everyone properly, including the Ewells. The judge had a troubling time trying to sentence Tom because he had every evidence and characteristics of a person that would be proven innocent. He was calm when being questioned, as Mayella was panicking when being placed under the spotlight. Mayella and Bob’s stories were never consistent and made them look suspicious. Unfortunately, the judge sentenced Tom to death although he knew for sure that he convicted an innocent man.

In chapters 17-24 in To Kill A Mockingbird, Jem and Scout observe their father in court defending Tom Robinson (a black man) from the accusations of the Bob Ewell (a "low grade ' ' white man). Bob Ewell accuses Tom Robinson of sexually assaulting his daughter; Mayella Ewell. Before the fate of Tom Robinson is given in the possession of the jury, both lawyers have a final attempt at convincing the jury that Tom Robinson should/shouldn 't be prosecuted. Atticus starts off his closing remarks with the fact that he believes that the case should have never come to trial and that the case "”is as simple as black and white."

Mayella Ewell is a victim. Mayella is a victim of her father, Bob Ewell, because he is an alcoholic that abuses her. During the Tom Robinson trial, Atticus proved Bob Ewell to be left-handed. Based on Bob and Heck Tate’s testimonies, Mayella’s right eye was blackened
