Has a parent ever been away on business? How did the house feel with out with? Lonely maybe even isolated. Did the remaining parent tried to bond with you? How did that feel? Probably awkward. In the stories Tortilla Sun by Jennifer Cervantes and Confetti Girl by Diana López this was the case. The main characters of each story have to deal with only having one parent. There are so used to the life that they have that they can’t adjust to the one that they presently have. This caused many issues. Though this seems like a tension filled prison for the character there really is something that the could do to solve the tension. First, In the story the mother and daughter in the story conflicting views adds tension to the story. According to the text, “New Mexico is worlds away from California . . . That was half my life ago. She’s a stranger! . . . .Oh Izzy she's hardly a stranger. She’s family. I already have your ticket. You leave Monday” (parargraphs 24 and 25). Izzy’s mother is focused on getting her degree and this requires sending her daughter to New Mexico which causes family disrupt. Though her mother may think that she is doing what is best for daughter she is actually hurting her. Her daughter, Izzy, on the other hand believes that her mother is selfish and is only thinking of herself. It bother her because her mother is so nonchalant and acts like her daughter doesn’t matter, but in reality he mother is probably doing this for her daughter. Second, the clashing of views of the mother and daughter cause tension because they misinterpreted each other. According to the text, “Opportunity? For me? Or for you? . . . I burrowed my head under the pillow with the baseball. A tiny part of me felt guilty for stealing it, but it belonged to my dad and that made it special to me. “ (Paragraphs 34 and 46). Was the tension lifted? Did life go back to the way it was before. Sometimes when family members are absent life can become twisted. There is an expectation for that remaining guardian to replace the missing person and do what they did, so your life can run as normal. But sometimes people can’t do that because they are not that person. Once you learn to understand and accept your remaining guardians abilities and shortcomings. This was demonstrated by both characters with their remaining characters. Have you ever been frustrated with your parents or parent? In the stories, Confetti Girl and Tortilla Sun, the both narrators have a hard time making peace with their parent. In both stories, the problems are creating tension between their family, and it’s because of the difference in points of views. Such as the daughter in Confetti Girl, she is frustrated on how the dad is not paying attention to her wants and needs. Also, how she prefers on talking about something meaningful to her than about books.
The Distance Between Us is a memoir book written by Reyna Grande in which she depicts the harsh life in the U.S. for being an undocumented immigrant from Mexico. Back then, however, she was too young to fully understand the situations that she was in. " In chapter 20 of the section 1 of the book", she mentions that this was the third attempt for her and her family to cross the border because of her physical weakness. Due to potential risks of getting caught, her father convinced them to succeed this time by almost threatening them: he said that this will be the last time, and if they fail, they will be sent back to their house in Mexico where their mother apparently would not care their children as a parent. While in the background of the officer reading the juvenile file, seated behind Lani was her mother. Puffy red eyes since refusal of sleep, salty tears dripping down her face, with heavy sobs that echoed through the courtroom. The courtroom began to look at the blur with color. The misery this mother felt locked in her throat, also feeling as if nothing matters now. As the third offense was being read, Lani finally glimpses to see her mother, and in clear view she saw a heartbroken mother.
Amari experienced a lot of change throughout her journey in slavery. She became more confident and had more hope in herself. Also Afi, a former slave she befriended on the Middle Passage taught Amari to have hope and to not give up. In the book, Copper Sun, the author shows plenty examples of having hope in impossible situations. Amari was a strong girl who showed she had hope throughout the entire book, even in the toughest situations.

Its proud head braves the winds even when it is near its end.” In reading the book as they walk us through the life story of Sundiata, there have been several notable reoccurring themes that slowly build up to Sundiata’s growth. “Dusting” is a short poem written by Julia Alvarez. The overall conflict is about a young girl who strives to be the complete opposite of her mother. The story takes place in her home where she is physically writing her name in all sorts of furniture. From cabinets, dining room tables and chairs, to glass mirrors and bookshelfs, she writes her name in anything visible. At the very beginning of the tale she begins to scribble her name normally in dusty cabinets.
Gertie has to act as though she is always happy so that Izzie doesn’t feel bad about their mothers passing. Their plan is to maintain high grades in school and act as though they are okay. Gertie’s math teacher is the one person that prevents that plan from working. Mrs. Freeman is concerned and has taken an interest in Gertie after seeing her mother wasn’t at the parent conference. Gertie is reluctant to open up about her secret.
In Central America, some parents leave their children, and set out a journey to the United States in hopes of making a better life for them. Throughout the years, the children who are left behind eventually go on a journey to be reunited with their family. On the journey, the children acquire many character traits and skills that ultimately make them grow as a person. In the book by Sonia Nazario titled Enrique’s Journey, author Nazario writes about Enrique, a young Honduran boy, who goes on a long and strenuous trip to find his mother. In the article “Desperate Voyagers,” by Ioan Grillo, it talks on the subject of children fleeing their country due to gang violence.
In search for a better life outside of the Dominican Republic, Anita’s whole family tries to move to America. One day sitting in her room, Anita look out her window to see no one left on the compound. Anita explains, “I look out the door and down the dark driveway. The whole flock of our family has fled. Only Mami and Chucha and I are left (pg.100 p.9).”Her whole family has gone to America to be free, leaving everything behind.
Innogen and Miranda create self-control for protection against their father’s influence. When Cymbeline questions Innogen’s about her relationship, Innogen displays a similar attitude with her husband. She questions his own actions regarding their relationship especially when Posthumus questions Innogen’s fidelity. Similarly, Miranda questions her approval with others because she is unsure how to respond; she much wants to please everyone. The contrast between these two women showcase the different ways a father affect how the daughter perceive themselves and the interactions with others.
In the story, Nieve hasn’t seen her mother in three weeks and gets a rare visit from her mother for her birthday. When they see each other Nieve’s mother gets emotional and begins to cry because of seeing her daughter covered in bruises. Nieve’s mother also brings her books to read and food that Fausto made as presents for her. While Nieve’s mother is visiting Nieve’s father returns and is mad her for visiting. In Everyone Leaves, Guerra writes , “My mom visited me for three hours, until my father showed up and screamed at her that she was crazy and that we have food her”. My mom got scared and said good-bye right away.”

There is no desperation in her actions, only a controlled, deliberate, execution of a well thought-out plan to free herself from a meaningless existence. Moreover, the image of loss is heightened by the mother-daughter relationship in “night, Mother” as Thelma fights to preserve Jessie’s life and Jessie struggles to control her own fate. Ironically, this struggle results in a connection between mother and daughter that was never possible until this moment. The helplessness Thelma feels in attempting to prevent Jessie’s suicide and the revelation of the deep psychological loss felt by Jessie are the driving forces of this play.
Since I raised my voice at Mom she did not say anything for the rest of the ride. As I gaze out the window looking at the open fields and all the trees I try and picture New Mexico, will it be silent and a no man's land where grandma lives or will it be a very compact and tight place mobbed with people. I hope that the place isn’t too heavily populated but at the same time I hope there are some people that I could get to become friends with and have some sort of interaction with. This opposition adds tension to the story. The fact that Izzy’s mother is going to Costa Rica without her consent makes her upset. The mother plans to send Izzy away with her grandma for the time she will be gone. While Izzy is furious about the decision that has been made, the mother does not think it is bad at all.
