Societies under a lot of stress will always give into taunters. Margaret Atwood’s theory that societies under a lot of stress will give in to a person or a group proves a struggle between weak people giving into stronger people. In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the weak people are taunted by the stronger people to give in to admitting to witchcraft. Imagine being put on trial for witchcraft because a group of teenage girls pretended that they are under a spell, and being terrified knowing that their accusations put several innocent people to death. This is what many people would experience during the Salem witchcraft trials. The Crucible, a play written by Arthur Miller, captured the emotions of this time period. It starts when Betty, the only child still alive from Reverend Parris and Elizabeth, has fallen severely ill. The family and neighbors are very concerned and call a doctor who believes that her illness is the result of witchcraft.

People have been fighting and blaming things on each other for thousands of years. Historically, when a country with power was facing an issue, they accused another country of being the cause of their issue, and battled about it through war. As time went on people used that idea to settle arguments, or find reasons to situations with difficult answers. The puritans of the New England Colonies in the 1600’s adopted this idea with the collaboration of their deep Christian faith and found explanations to many of these problems by accusing people of dealing with the devil. Today, people act similarly when they allege others for their own problems and pass their conflicts onto each other.

“The edge of the wilderness was close by. The American continent stretched endlessly West, and it was full of mystery for them. It stood dark and threatening, over their shoulders night and day, for out in Indian tribes marauded from time to time, and Reverend Parris had parishioners who had lost relatives to these heathen” (Miller,5). In the beginning of the book, Reverend Paris one night found his niece and all her friends dancing (which is forbidden in this time period) in the woods, which is known to be the Devil’s playground.

In the United States there is a law that states "Every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty,” Title II, Chapter 1, Article 29. This law it allows the people to fight for what they were accused of until either proven guilty or proven innocent. Unfortunately, this does not stop people from making up answers to crime that they accused just to get answers. People want the answers now, so they will believe anything that they hear. If someone is accused, but did not confess they will pressure them to confessing, even if they didn't do the crime.

Imagine the town of Salem, Massachusetts,and how it screams witchcraft. In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, the town’s reverend’s daughter, Betty, becomes “ill”. She had became this way because of what had happened in the forest. Everybody freaks out and Reverend Parris wants nothing to do with the thought of witchcraft in his very home. He sends for the town doctor, but the doctor finds no illness that ails Betty.

The year 1692 was a bad one for the strict and Puritan town. More than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft and 20 were executed. Though not all characters in this novel were based on a single person, each portrayed the lives of many during the horrific trials. The story of John Proctor, one of the main characters in the Crucible, was dealt a bad hand and went through a torturous trial just to have a fatal outcome.

In modern day witches are thought of as ugly, gruesome creatures with green wrinkled skin and yellow teeth. They carried around a wooden broomstick that was their main form of transpiration. The difference modern day witches and witches from the late 1600s is they were thought to be anyone who was unfaithful to the church or did the Devil's work and looked exactly like a regular person, no gross skin or yellow teeth just an everyday human. In Arthur Miller's The Crucible these witches were just like any ordinary person, throughout the play everyone begins to blame problems of Salem on this idea of witchcraft. everyone turning against each other just make sure they are safe from the executions in the village.

Rebecca Nurse is a religious woman in The Crucible and I am in life as well. In The Crucible, many people are accused of witchcraft and are put on trial to be hung. If the convicted admit to their witch actions, a sentence to jail, as well as a fine would be charged upon them.

In the book, the crucible the main topic was about witchcraft. Parris is on his knees praying in the first scene facing his daughter who is on the bed unconscious. The rumor around was that his slave, his daughter, and his niece were in the forest dancing around naked with other girls. Abigail says they did not do witchcraft and that Betty simply fainted just because she got scared when she saw her father there. Elizabeth a woman who worked with Abigail at her home once but got fired has stopped going to church.
