Gangs. Violence. Poverty. These are all things that could help develop the theme in a story. In The Outsiders and “Nothing Gold Can Stay” the same themes can be expressed in different ways. These two texts could have the same theme but with different elements to analyze. You could relate to someone’s childhood or how maybe you were once an outsider and was excluded. The authors develop themes by using characters, title, setting and imagery, and different ideas. Many elements of literature can contribute to developing the theme in the Outsiders. For example, setting and imagery. In the Outsiders the two gangs live on different sides of the town. The area that they might live in might not be the most ideal place to live. It might not be luxury …show more content…
The Greasers aren’t very wealthy and they also are young but not innocent. They do bad things and they killed someone and they steal and are looked for by the cops a lot. Eventually you will grow to be old and will not be as active as you were in younger in your older days. “They ran when I stabbed him. They all ran.” as it was stated in the text. This quote shows that they killed someone and they are young people but are not innocent. This is when they lose their innocence. This is when they commit a very, very serious crime. Another quote to support my evidence is, “ Dally had spent three years on the wild side of New York and had been arrested at the age of ten. He was tougher than the rest of us--- tougher, colder, meaner. The shade of difference that separates a greaser from a hood wasn't present in Dally. He was as wild as the boys in the downtown outfits, like Tim Shepard's gang.” This quote shows another bad thing that happens with the people that are Greasers. This is when they start to realize they are in massive trouble. In The Outsiders the ideas of innocence and youth are presented by showing that some people are innocent when they are younger and some people are not. …show more content…
In “Nothing Gold Can Stay” it states,” Nature’s first green is gold.” When someone hears this they might think of a nice place that has nice weather and is very peaceful. Also, in “Nothing Gold Can Stay” it is developing the idea of youth because you cannot be young forever. Eventually you will be old and not be be able to much and it won’t be as good and enjoyable as your younger days. It is the giving you the message that you cannot always get what\ you want and can’t have everything. Something in your life will happen whether someone important to you dies or someone in your family gets diagnosed with a harsh disease. Furthermore, it is giving you the idea that all good must come to an end. In addition, the title also helps build up the theme. The title “Nothing Gold Can Stay”, it is pretty much saying that not anything gold, is able to stay. The characters do not play a role in the theme simply because there are no characters and without any characters they can’t help in any
Dally… He was tougher than the rest of us--- tougher, colder, meaner. The shade of difference that separates a greaser from a hood wasn't present in Dally” (Hinton 73). Ponyboy taking Dally’s character at face value from what he had heard from others contributes to his misjudgement, just like how the Socs misjudged him. However, as Ponyboy grows to trust Dally, he realizes that none of the rumors are true.
Authors use themes in their books to connect the real world with the context in the book. There are many themes that are described in the events, characters, and messages within the play. Arthur Miller creates relatable themes that show the emotional effects of mankind in his book The Crucible. At the beginning of the play, Reverend Parris is at the bed side of his niece, Betty, worrying about what her dabbling’s in witchcraft would do to his already poor reputation in Salem.
In The Outsiders the Socials have been making the most trouble like fighting, mistreating people and stealing. My evidence is that in chapter 2 Johnny,Ponyboy and Dally were walking with cherry and out of now were bob and the other Socs came and they wanted to take cherry, but the Greasers took out their knife and broke a bottle so they kept walking with cherry, In chapter 4 pony and johnny was walking in the park and then they see a blue mustang and they knew it was the Socs and the Socs were taunting them and ponyboy spit and they decided to drown him. In chapter 9 they got in a gang fight Socs and Greasers. Also in the book it says that Greasers and the Socs were from the East so people saw the Socs as the nice and good kids because they have
"We'd have to anyway if we got caught. You know the first thing the judge does is make you achieve a haircut. "(pg.71). This shows that greasers are poor and have nothing else to take away except for their hair. This also shows that people showed disrespect towards greasers for the reason that they didn't have nice clothes, or fancy cars. "
A book and a movie can be both the same and different. In The Outsiders there are many similarities and differences with the book and movie. They were the same because Johnny kills a man, they cut their, there was the movie scene, and Johnny and Ponyboy went to the church. Some of the differences is when Darry slaps Ponyboy but in the movie he pushes him, Johnny doesn't bring a lot of food in the book but does in the movie he does, when Johnny killed the man it was more described but it wasn't in the movie, and Johnny says he wants to kill himself in the movie. In The Outsiders one of the themes is “friendship”
It shows the consequence of what will happen to a teenager if they conform to the common rebellion of teenagers. The two different tones of the poem are done on purpose so for those who have different mindsets can understand the lesson that is being
The Crucible Literary Analysis The theme in a story is the concealed message that the author is trying to portray. The theme can be compared to a baby crying. Sometimes it is obvious as to why the baby is crying, but often times it is a mere thinking situation. The baby cannot tell you why it is crying or what he/she wants.
S.E. Hinton shows the Greasers' pride in the rumble as they chant "I am a greaser, a JD, a hood. I blacken the name of our fair city... a menace to society... victim of environment, underprivileged, rotten, no-count hood" (136). The Greasers' lives go around in a cycle: the boys do something illegal, they get caught, and then they receive resentment from society which only makes them want to do something illegal again. The reality of proper resolution is not apparent to the Greasers, and the boys continue to act in violence. Michelle Inderbitzen's article attempts to provide an understanding of their society: "Being labeled a greaser put in motion a process by which all Ponyboy's behavior would subsequently be judged, whether he consented to it or not" (Outsiders and Justice Consciousness 3).
In life, conflict is a natural sense of relations between two people. Conflict is always going to occur in life from seeing someone to meeting them. However, with conflict comes theme as they are interconnected. Among the conflicts is between two characters named Duncan and Roach in the novel Acceleration by Graham Mcnamee. The conflict Duncan has with himself also leads to a conflict with Roach.
A great story always has at least one theme. A theme is a central idea that the story’s events make the reader think about deeply. They are like the ground work of the story, giving the reader something to hold on to through out the story. Some stories may contain many themes, however, they all need at least one to give direction as well as purpose to the reader. Several themes appear in Rick Riordan 's novel Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief, including the fight against good and evil, friendship, and the betrayal of loved ones.
There are many themes in works of literature. My 2 topics of comparison have some themes that pop out from the stories. For Runaway, my fiction topic, a significant theme is poverty. Makes sense, because Holly is an orphan, since her dad died from a tractor accident, and her mother died, due to being a heroin addict. Holly says ‘’It’s a cold, hard, cruel fact that my mother loved heroin more than she loved me.’’
In the movies "The Outsiders" and "West Side Story" I noticed that there were many similarities and differences. For example, West Side Story was a musical and the gangs were known for having one 'Hispanic gang' and one 'Caucasian gang,' but The Outsiders was not a musical and the gangs were based on the poor side of the town and the richer part of the town. Although, even with the many differences there were also many similarities like, most of the people in the movies were in two gangs who hated each other. As I was watching both movies I found that many of the similarities came from how the characters acted, their interests/the scenes and the plot so, I decided to write my paragraphs based on those three subjects.
Several novels convey a theme that is either perceived as universal or selective towards certain races, people, or groups, consequently, many stories may consist of the same themes but portray it differently through their own characters. In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar the theme of greed and power consuming even the possibly most honorable man in all of Rome during the time period. Brutus is manipulated into assisting in the brutal assassination of Julius Caesar, the current ruler of Rome, for what he believes to be the better way of helping the Roman Republic regain its freedom over Caesar 's tyrannical rule. With the help of other conspirators who simply wished to rid Rome of Caesar, as well as Cassius, his brother-in-law, Cassius is overcome
One literary element which has an extensive impact on the reader is theme. Theme is the main idea in which why the author may have chose to write the story. Although there is more than one theme present, there is one theme that is eminent compared to other additional themes. The theme that Thompson portrayed was that the people who are closest to one and one interacts with the most has an increased chance to betray one at one 's weakest points. One of the ways Thompson chose to expose the theme is through a large amount of conflict.
Often this happens without the author’s intention. For example, in the sci-fi genre, the protagonist is often involved with science in some way. Without a theme in place readers would not know the ways Taylor was affected by her abandonment. By having the theme of belonging, readers gain a deeper understanding of Taylors world and thoughts. She’s felt neglected and alone from the time she was seven, resulting in a desperate need to belong.
