A lot of America’s veterans are now having to live on the streets after coming home from combat. and a problem like this should not be occurring. There are close to 50,000 homeless veterans here in America. This is due to the lack of support networks for returning veterans and also the substandard pension veterans receive. There have been efforts to combat this problem but it is still a large problem all across America.

“Only 28.5 percent of Americans with identifiable mental illness seek services annually,” and of those 28.5% only 11% were receiving the necessary medication (Rosenheck). The veteran population is more likely to experience traumatic brain injuries and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) which are one of the most substantial risk factors for homelessness (Fact Sheet: Veteran Homelessness). Not only are many non-veterans not seeking medical treatment for their mental illnesses, but many veterans as well are also not seeking the same treatment. This is apparent since there are 50% of homeless veterans who have a serious mental illness, which is not including those who have a mental illness that is not as apparent or life altering. The impact of Excelsior Scholarship As a college bound New York student the Excelsior Scholarship would play an incredible impact on my life. This is a great New York free tuition program that was introduced by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Students who already live in New York and will be able to attend college full will be able to benefit from this generosity. However, although this is a wonderful opportunity some students who desperately need it will not be able make use of it. Let us think of students who work part time or full time, or for some other reason can only do part time studies.

Jessica Rogers Mrs.Zumwalt English 2 October 20,2015 What is the Great Depression and Civilian Conservation Corps As the dark overcast of the sandstorms continued to rage, and the lands lay fallow, people wondered if there would ever going to be any hope for their future. The dust still had not settled from the initial impact of the great depression, and the loss of jobs sent people into the furthest corners of the dark and dank streets. As an unfortunate result of the dust-storms and droughts, it caused a massive loss of multiple crops. Which sent the stock market into a downward spiral which essentially in turn caused it to hit rock bottom and fail.

Tell us about an experience, in school or out, that taught you something about yourself and/or the world around you. (maximum 200 words) One of the few things we had to do in choir besides show up and practice was to record a submission for the Texas All-State Choir. Our conductor didn’t make us send them in if we didn’t want to, but I always did. In ninth grade, the songs were particularly challenging and I knew I wouldn’t make it.

When I began the Minority Student Program (“MSP”), I had expectations that through the program I would gain insight into the requirements for success in law school. I was grateful that I was selected to participate, because I wanted to be fully prepared for the first semester. Fortunately, MSP introduced me to the law school community, allowed me to build relationships with my peers, and enabled me to thrive from the first day of classes and beyond. The program has made a tremendous impact on my first semester of law school. Additionally, I was welcomed into a community with a scope beyond the current MSP students and faculty.

The majority (58%) of young homeless people in District 6 have a drug problem - mostly in connection with cannabis (59%), in 19% of cases, but also with hard drugs and 13% with alcohol. A particularly striking feature: 51% of homeless young people suffering from mental illness (2009, there are still 35%) (San Francisco Point In Time Homeless Count). One finding was that the situation in the District 6 youth homelessness despite targeted prevention measures due to structural barriers and benefit cuts from worsening.

From the start of high school, I have been a proactive student by being involved, demonstrating character, and overcoming challenges. I believe I have taken the initiative to make not only changes within community but also better understand my aspirations in life. Moreover, my involvement in community services has assisted a diversity of individuals in various events. Certain service clubs allowed me to realize the needs my community pertains, comprehend various cultures, and establish a level of respect toward their heritage. Students Together

When I was eleven, I was asked to choose one word to describe my entire life and of course, only one word came to mind- dance. It was the perfect way to describe me. From then on, anytime I was asked, "What is an interesting fact about you?", "What is your favorite thing to do?" or almost any question about myself, my answer has always been dance. When I was fourteen, I decided to take a risk. I had debated the decision before, but it was always too expensive.

Service learning is an important concept because it builds one’s character by allowing an individual to step outside their comfort zone and become involved in the community. This year, the Dragon Battalion was tasked to create a fleece blanket to donate to the Salvation Army. Before we began our project, we had to learn what service learning was and what we needed to know about the overall project. Lesson one discusses the difference between two types of service: community service and service learning. Unlike community service, where you are forced to help the community, service learning allows an individual to learn from an experience.

When I started high school, I was a year above everyone else in our Math pathway. I also took all advanced classes. As a result, I had the best and most passionate teachers while my friends were stuck with teachers who did not care. So many opportunities are wasted by standard teachers who do not take the time to appreciate and acknowledge their students regardless of their prior knowledge or will to learn.

One of the best things that ever happened to me was joining the Voice of the Young, a child-led group, which served as a mouthpiece to advocate for children in all operations, thus promoting their rights and welfare. I have had the pleasure of volunteering at the BMES expo on October 7th and 9th, 2015 for University of South Florida (booth #922-924) at Tampa Conventional Centre, Tampa, Florida. I wanted to volunteer because I was keen to find out about the research people are conducting in the market and other universities and to talk to aspiring students to inspire them to do research in the Biomedical engineering field. On the first day we just had to set up the booth and to learn how the thing were supposed to be kept and how to make other people feel welcoming, but on the 9th I got to talk to many other people about the research that our professors are performing at the university and got to know about their expectations and about some other people about the research they are doing and what they expect from our university.

While attending The University of Mississippi Desoto, I have many goals. During my first year the three goals that I have set for myself are to maintain a great grade point average, volunteer in the community, and to help other students with studying. I think all three of these goals are necessary to both be successful and to be self-fulfilled. Maintaining a high grade point average is very important to me.
