Steve Harmin was a monster because Frankenstein once said, “a monster is never instinct”. Steve is 16 years old. Steve lives in NewYork city. Steve is on trial for robbery and murder. In the novel, Monster, by Walter Dean Myers, Steve Harmon was a monster because he lied and he knew about the robbery. Steve was a monster because he lied. He was giving his testimony in court. The book said, “‘I don’t know exactly when the robbery happened, but I know I wasn’t in the drugstore that day.’” (Myers 229). This shows that he lied in his testimony. He was in the store that day because he told us that he was in the store. He also knew that the robbery happened that day because James king told him about the robbery. He also knew what time the robbery was gonna happen. Similarly, He was giving his testimony in court. The book said, “‘Usually I see him in the playground. Maybe he’d say something like “Those guys can’t play ball,” stuff like that.’” (Myers 226). This shows that he lied in his testimony. In the story he talks to James king like a best friend to him. He also talks to James King more than just playing

James king said this in a flash back. The book said, “Drugstores always keep some money… All we need is a lookout. You know, check the place out…’” (Myers 150). This show’s that he did talk about the crime. This also shows that he might have done the crime. This also shows that he did not only talk about basketball with James king. Also, He write this in his journal. The book said,“I walked into a drugstore to look for some mints, and then I walked out…” (Myers 140). He said that he did not go in the store that day but he did. He also said that he is not friends with James king but he is. He also said that he will not lie during the testimony. but he lied six times during the testimony. Steve was a monster because he did not tell the police about the
My final reason is he hears some women talk about the crime and runs. Steve has a very Guilty conscious meaning that he is trying to say that he is a good person when really he's
Steve might have gone into the drugstore then left because he was scared. However, this still means that Steve would be charged with felony murder if he would have admitted it to the jury and they ruled him guilty, he would have gotten a lesser sentence because he was not fully involved. O'Brien also made another point that could make some room for reasonable doubt in her closing statements. After she repeated to the jury the conversation where Mrs. Petrocelli and Mr. Evans talked about what happened after the robbery, she brings up the point “Where was Steve Harmon, the alleged lookout man?”(249). If Steve was really a part of this robbery you would think that he would go with Evans and King after to eat and get his share of the money from the
His actions are heinous. Monster is a label Steve wants to distance himself from. The title Monster is significant because it represents the evil of murder and the theme of the book. It shows that if one man is capable of killing another in cold blood, then he is not a human but rather a monster.
Addison Lucas Mrs.A/Mr.G English 10 23 February 2023 Monster Monster is a novel written by Walter Myers, this story is based on Steve Harmon, a teenager who finds himself in a difficult situation as he is on trial for murder. While some people believe that Steve Harmon was not guilty, in reality, he was guilty because he had to be trained by O’Brien, he was at the drugstore during the crime, and he changed his story. The first reason why Steve is guilty is becasue he had to be trained by his defense attorney, Kathy O’brien. ”We’re going to play a little game.
There was another person that was on trial named King, everyone believes that he was the one who killed the store owner. That is everyone's truth, but that could be wrong due to there being no physical proof of him killing the store owner. Even though
Since he is already viewed upon as guilty of felony murder by others, Steve and O’Brien must distance themselves from King. If they do not, Steve will appear as if he has a close relationship with James King therefore making it look even more clear that Steve took part in the robbery and thus not benefiting Steve’s cause. Earlier in the story, from the text, the reader can clearly identify this problem of distance between Steve and King. Therefore, O’Brien tells Steve that he needs to find a way to minimize the relationship between him and King as much as possible. Steve recalls this from his notes as he writes: “Miss O’Brien was mad today.
He admits on camera that there was a sexual relationship between him and Susan. Steve wrote songs about her, would try and record her, or take pictures of her, and said he was very aroused by her presence. He would save personal items used by Susan and take things of hers that could be considered revolting. Although, it was recorded that Susan had no interest in him and wanted him to stop. Steve was eventually investigated and convicted of child pornography.
This was never fully proven, yet King says “I need to get paid, man. I ain’t got nothing between my butt and the ground but a rag” (Myers 50). Steve responds with “I hear that” (Myers 50). This shows the reader that they both needed money and were willing to do something for money. This proves that if Steve participated in the robbery, he would have been compensated, but he never was.
Johnny Webb was Tod’s jailmate and told the jury that Tod confessed to his crimes. This evidence was very shady because of his statement,”I don’t remember, you know what I’m saying. Something to put pressure on somebody to do something to get me out.” Johnny was a notorious liar and other evidence was found that after he gave his testimony, his sentence was shortened. Almost always, a prisoner will do anything to get their sentence shortened.
What did I do? What did I do? Anybody can walk into a drugstore and look around. Is that what I’m on trial for? I didn’t do anything!”(Myers, 115).
They have told you the true story of what happened that fateful night on June 17, 2016. Their testimonies show you that the defendant was not helpless and that she had many opportunities to leave her husband. In addition, their testimonies showed you that the defendant knowingly and premeditatedly murdered her unconscious husband. Unlike the defense, the prosecution and its witnesses have no gain by lying to
His wording shows that he doesn’t know who he is and therefore believes he is a Monster as Ms. Petrocelli calls him. He accepts people’s judgments as his self-truth. Even though, he, himself, accepts the worst he still wants people to perceive him as a good person, especially his mom. Steve’s mom’s words cut deeper in him because his mom believes he didn’t do it while he knows he did. 5 days into the trial, his mother comes by and talks to him hoping to make him feel better, “I could still feel Mama’s pain.
Although Steve may have known about the robbery he did not go through with it. He felt remorse after he heard of the death of the innocent storeowner. Furthermore, while there is reason to believe Harmon knew ahead of time the plan of the robbery, there is no evidence that he did his job. When Bobo took the stand in the trial he told the jury that he did not see a signal from Steve.
Him being found not guilty was a good thing because all 12 people in the jury agreed that he didn’t do anything wrong. The jury decided that he didn’t deserve a punishment because he didn’t commit a crime during the robbery, so they said he isn’t guilty. However, just because Steve was found not guilty doesn’t mean he was innocent. Therefore, Steve was a monster. Steve was a monster because he always doubts himself.
In the world today, there are people who make questionable decisions. In the fiction book of Monster by Walker Dean Myers; a young black American teen on trial for murder. Steve was the lookout for the robbery but was not responsible for the murder of Mr.Nesbitt death. In the begging Steve admits to being at the store, at the time the robbery took place. This alone goes to show that Steve did take place or at least was there when the robbery took place.
