“Slavery: From Declaration to Civil War” Introduction: Slavery is a topic that has been one of the most shocking yet natural around the world. Slavery is defined as “Coerced Labor” and “The most important form of labor in New World”. (Roark 72) This idea and action provokes mixed feelings in the heart and minds of everybody and still people allowed it.

Many people migrated west for many reasons during the 1800's. Some of these reasons were government sponsored and others were not. Some examples of government sponsored reasons include the Homestead Acts, Mexican War, and the Gadsden Purchase. Some nongovernment sponsored reasons include the Gold Rush, and the Mormons. The Homestead Acts was one of the first reasons for westward expansion.

In the 1800’s treatment and livelihood of whites and blacks varied greatly from today. Blacks were not considered free, which allowed for slavery of people. Whites were allowed to buy and sell blacks and utilize them for their domestic and field needs. The whites provided both housing and punishment to their slaves depending on their job they did. In 1840, most of Western American was untouched by settlers. A few Americans lived in either territory, and most were scattered among the Mexican settlers. However, when the 1840s came around and saw a increase in American settlers in the West. Oregon drew many settlers from the Mississippi with the promise of farmland. The dominant classes of people in the 1800’s were that of the white male protestant, and most whom fit the picture were not wealthy or powerful. The African – American 's Assimilation into White America America is often considered the land of opportunities, a place where people can have a fresh start, a clean slate. America is a land that is made up of immigrants. Over the centuries America has been a place where people dream to live in, however the American dream wasn 't as perfect as believed; there were issues of race inferiority, slavery and social inequality amongst other problems. In the 1700-1800’s, the use of African American slaves for backbreaking, unpaid work was at its prime.
