After the Civil War The Reconstruction had been a failure in bringing the south back into the Union in the way it had used to be before the Civil War. However, the Reconstruction had also successfully been able to restore the unified nation and its acknowledgment to the thirteenth amendment, Fourteenth amendment, and the Fifteenth amendment. Therefore, the Reconstruction's failure wasn’t a very fair assessment, but it had been successful in restoring the United States and the bringing of freedom to the African American slaves. The Reconstruction had not been a failure to the Union, but had to be a success and to be ratifying the idea of bringing in the divided nation back together. The Reconstruction had been during a United States period …show more content…
Which in this case had been at eleven of the Confederate States of Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Louisiana and Virginia. Each of those states of United States had been seceded from the Union far before the start of the Civil War and had hoped to be solved in the readmission from each of those states. The creation of the Reconstruction had been during the years when Abraham Lincoln had planned for the Reconstruction be during the Civil War and had been announced at the first comprehensive Reconstruction. Abraham Lincoln had hoped that this would be accomplished in his Reconstruction plan that was to have an end or to weakened the Confederacy and to bring the Nation back together before the start a postwar for the southern states. However Abraham Lincoln had been unable to set his plans in action before his assassination that was after his speech in the state of Louisiana about the Reconstruction and that had been to free african americans in April the eleventh, of the year …show more content…
The Civil War had also been fought over what should the states that should be able to own slaves or not to own slaves that were in slavery. In which it had also been in the time that was when Abraham Lincoln had been trying to create the Reconstruction. The Reconstruction also had made to be redressed in the inequities of slavery, which had made the eleven southern states wanting to secede from the Union. At the Union level it had hoped to be creating new laws and new constitutional amendments that would be altering the federal system and the American citizenship. Which had made the Republicans being able to convince that of former slaves should be earned the equal rights that had been required in the south readmission to the Union. In Abraham Lincoln's last speech that had been before his assassination was that of him expressing the views of the african americans of how they had fought with the Union and should have had the right to vote. The Reconstruction also had the government being able to manage the african americans affairs of the expunging from enacting the black codes from Andrew Johnson's policies. Soon in the year of 1866, the southern states electors passed the Freedmen's Bureau and the Civil Rights Bill. The Freedmen’s Bureau was to be able to extend the agency Congress to oversee the
The period of Reconstruction had its pros and cons. Without it having its ups and downs, we wouldn’t be where we’re at today. One positive influence was the reunification of the Union. This departure helped regain hope for the United States. It lasted four years, and impacted the separation and recreation of the states.
Reconstruction was socially unsuccessful because of the Ku Klux Klan, Jim Crow Laws, and Segregation. The Ku Klux Klan would threaten, beat, and murder blacks and republicans. They would burn crosses on their raids, and would throw little wooden caskets in the home of the Republican or African American who was being raided. Jim Crow Laws separated the population because, it make it so white people would always have the better out of black people such as, seats on a train, or there American rights would be discriminated on. Jim Crow Laws also made it so blacks would have to go to different schools, different public transportation areas, different schools, and different restaurants.
The Reconstruction was unsuccessfull because of some important reasons. First, the South was still aracist part of the United States because they created the Jim Crow Laws, what means that the people who lived and administratedthe South were not intelligent. The second example is that Abraham Lincoln, who started and incentivated the Reconstruction, was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, so it made the Reconstruction process to be less efective. Finally, the last problem was the Solid South, it is a name that the South recieved because it was a solid white, solid racist and solid Democrat, what means that they were not able to support black people. Concluding, all of these examples shows why the Reconstruction was unsuccessfull
Reconstruction had many faces during and after the Civil War. First, there was Lincoln’s plan, and then Johnson’s plan, but the Military Reconstruction Act affected the country the most. Because of the effects, this act is viewed in many ways. Some viewed it as a failure while others viewed it as a success. Many view Reconstruction as a failure, but it should be viewed as a success because the educational system was improved, colored received their basic rights, and
There were many outcomes from the Reconstruction era. Some were successful, but most were not. The few successes were mostly beneficial to the Union; however, they did not resolve the problems that Reconstruction was supposed to. The purpose of Reconstruction was to end slavery, giving African American males the same rights as white males. This did not happen as there was the poor treatment and discrimination of African Americans after the war.
Following this, the Civil War took on a new dimension. The Union winning would fundamentally transform the South, where the “peculiar institution” of slavery was a crucial aspect of the economy, politics, and society. Just prior to the end of the war, in April 1865, Lincoln shocked many by suggesting limited suffrage for African Americans in the South, allowing them to vote, at least to some degree. The assassination of Lincoln was soon after, and his successor, Andrew Johnson, oversaw the beginning of Reconstruction. Beginning in May of 1865, Johnson’s Reconstruction policies required former Confederate states to uphold the abolition of slavery, pay off war debt and swear loyalty to the Union.
The aspects of the Reconstruction that I view as successes are the Emancipation Proclamation, the Civil Rights Act, and the 14th and
Reconstruction was a failure in many ways. Although Reconstruction did abolish slavery, African Americans did not truly gain their freedom and the nation was not unified. The Emancipation Proclamation that President Lincoln issued in 1863 to end slavery was unsuccessful. In a petition of black residents of Nashville sent to the delegates in 1865, they demanded slavery to be thoroughly abolished and for the right to vote (3). However, not only did many slave owners ignore Lincoln’s order, the Emancipation Proclamation did not eliminate slavery in the Union border states and states under control of the Union.
1. Many historians consider reconstruction to be a failure. Post Civil War, the Union had won and set to appease the southern ex-Confederacy through reconstruction. Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation and the amendments freeing the southern slaves and granting them citizenship. But after his assassination, Reconstruction plummeted.
The primary objective of the Reconstruction was to reunite the North and the South; however the South gave backlash to the integration of African Americans into their society. They viewed it as a compromise of their ideology. The reconstruction failed to reunite the nation because of the nation’s differences in opinion towards integration. This proved to be a large enough obstacle for the Reconstruction to not achieve its goals and be deemed ineffective. The era of the Reconstruction was a struggle for integration where legislation promoting persecution of African-Americans, polarizing the nation and increasing tensions in the south.
Reconstruction is the time period after the Civil War, where the country attempted to improve the Union. There were many successes, but what also comes along with success is failure. During the reconstruction many failures were present; such as the lack of racial equality and blatant racism towards blacks, a failing economy in the South, and tense relations between the North and the South. This created a very intense and challenging period of time for the Union.
The reconstruction period was a failure because African Americans, mainly males, were not treated with equality although the constitution said that the they were free and had the right to vote, be educated and had the right to liberty, life and the pursuit to happiness. Organizations, like the KKK, were created to harm freed slaves and their families. Laws were created such as the Black Codes restricting former slaves from their rights. African Americans endured a lot of violence over the years. “In Grayson, Texas, a white man and two friends murdered three former slaves because the wanted to ‘ thin the niggers out and drive them to their hole’”.
In many ways the Reconstruction era can be considered both a failure and a success. It was a successs due to the fact that it ended the separation between the North and South, and ended the South trying to separate themselves from the North. Although there were many positives and successes to the Reconstruction era, there were many negatives and associated with giving slaves their freedom. The economy of the plantations. The racist group, KKK, became more important in the South attacking both blacks and whites striving to gain equal rights for people of all color.
The Reconstruction of the South following the American Civil War that lasted from 1865 – 1877 under three Presidents in America. The Reconstruction was not well accepted by the Southerners and there were many obstacles during the Reconstruction process. After reading about the Reconstruction, I will say the Reconstruction period was a success and failure so it's in between. I will be listing the successes and failures during Reconstruction period.
Reconstruction a Failure or Success? Throughout the years, America has gone through many different political changes. Many presidents selected with different plans for our future. Sadly, many of those objectives have failed or came to an end.
