Westerbork Concentration Camp

Westerbork camp was established in October 1939. Westerbork transit camp was a World War II Nazi refugees. The camp continued to function after the Germans invasion of the Netherlands in May 1940.In 1941 Westerbork had a population of one thousand Jewish refugees mostly from Germany. Westerbork served as a transit camp from 1942 to 1944, the Jews where sent their before they where deported to exterminate camps. Westerbork was enlarged.

During WWII close to 400,000 people were taken to Warsaw Ghetto, a 1.3 square mile space where disease and hunger was abundant. It was constructed with "10-foot-high walls topped with barbed wire" (Lowellmilkencenter.org). Nazi guards surrounded the entire Ghetto shooting anyone who attempted to escape. Anyone who survived living there would be sent to Treblinka Concentration Camp, where they would be killed. No Jews ever came out alive from that place.

In the years of the holocaust millions of people died. Including those of war prisoners and Jewish citizens. Several concentration camps were to blame because of this. Even though most did not live to the liberation there were a few lucky ones who survived and lived to tell about their experiences. Elie Wiesel spent his childhood in Auschwitz concentration camp, surrounded by death and misery, but managed to keep his head up and persevere through it.

One of the best known teenager to come to Westerbork was Anne Frank and her family. Westerbork was known for transporting Jews, Slavs, Homosexuals, Jehovah 's Witness, and so on to concentration camps or death camps. On July 14, 1942 the SS ordered that all Jews had to be examined and checked if they were eligible to work in concentration camps. On July 15, 1942 about 1,135 Jews were selected to work. German police, assisted by an SS company, and police, military from the Dutch took over Westerbork.

After the war, Otto Frank fulfilled her wish. After being found, they were taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau. With 1,011 other Jews, they were packed tightly in closed goods

Around 800,000 to one million individuals were killed at Treblinka Death Camp from July 23, 1942 to October 19, 1943 in Eastern Poland; 90 precent of all detainees was killed inside of two hours of entry. The bodies were then taken by Sonderkommandos to the open cremation pit on a peak. The pit had iron rails bound in layers inside of it like grillwork, on which the bodies were burned. Jews were intermittently forced to enter the pit and filter through the fiery remains for any bones that should have been be ground. On August 2, 1943, the prisoners fought back.

During World War ll, Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, created many extermination camps for Jews. These death camps had a major impact on European society, and the world. One of these death camps was the Belzec extermination camp. It was established in 1942. The very first concentration camp was set up in Dachau, Germany in 1933. Concentration camps kept opening up and being used all the way through to the end of World War II in 1945. As so many camps opened their had to be someone to build them for the prisoners of war, and believe it or not it was the prisoners themselves who had to build their own soon to be torture and sleeping chambers. In the Holocaust up to 6 million Jewish citizens died in either concentration camps or on the street. In the concentration camps people were either killed by being shot, gassed with poisonous gasses, tortured, or by catching a deathly disease or virus but prier to this they had to live in poor, poor living conditions.

The Nazis did this because they discriminate and hate the Jews. “German authorities established camps to handle the masses of people arrested as alleged subversives.” (www.ushmm.org) Germany blamed the Jews for their loss of World War I. “Concentration camps held two purposes, these purposes were to demoralize and dehumanize the prisoners.” (www.owlspace-ccm.rice.edu) The Nazis tortured them and made them break on the inside.

In all there were about 20,00 concentration camps, which were ran by the SS. Not all of these abominations were death camps. A majority of these camps were work camps. At the work camps very few survived. Inmates were forced to work until death.

This was such a tragic time in history and we should all be thankful that our world isn 't like this. The Concentration Camps were made because Hitler hated the jews and wanted to kill all and they were kind of brainwashing them to tell them it is a wonderful place to live. When they were making the camps the Nazis would go around just shooting people for no reason. So Hitler and the Nazis captured the majority of the Jews and put them into these camps saying they should be here and that they deserve to died and it is all their fault.

Although Anne Frank died, her diary still lives on. Christian states that “the girl started recording entries on June 14, 1942, and she continued writing down her impressions”. One reason why Anne wrote in her diary was to pass time by. Her and her family had to be very quiet, all the time, because they

The World War II brought about the incarceration of Jews and people who were taught to be associated with them. Even some people who were thought to be sympathizers also suffered similar fate. One of such people was Viktor Emil Frank, at the time of his incarceration, he was the director of therapy in a mental facility and had even run some successful youth programs. After his arrest, he was sent to a concentration camp together with his family and that is where he got the content of the book from.
