During the period 1860-1890, western expansion negatively impacted the lives of Native Americans, by turning their lives upside-down under the order of the orders of the federal government. I say this because The Americans massacred the friendly Indians, Disrespected the culture and beliefs by slaughtering the buffalo, and Forcing Indians to assimilate to American culture. Native Americans were negatively impacted by Americans because of the western expansion and in doing so it lead to the incorrect assumption which in fact lead to the massacre of friendly Indians. In the morning of November 29th Colonel Chivington allowed a surprise attack on the friendly native americans which lead to the death of mostly women and children. The Native
In this chapter of the book James W. Loewen talks about how the Native American's history has been misunderstood because of the how the textbook company has either disregarded it or it just went off of popular myths. Loewen's major concern is how their civilization, how syncretism played in Native peoples, and how the Europeans culturally imperialized them into European culture. Firstly the Native peoples in America had very civilized life just not how we as Europeans see it. Many of the tribes had a government that consisted of chiefs and elders.
By the mid-eighteenth century, tensions between the Native American tribes and English settlers had mounted to an all time high. Mistrust was frequent, as was betrayal. Fighting could break out in a minute, and then be finished the next. Political relationships were broken because of a war and massacre; the economy boomed because of barbaric markets & fur trade. Yet, a lasting effect took place after a war and fruit picking that shattered relations with the tribes for years to come.
jurisdiction faced insurmountable oppression. The United States now had dominion from the Atlantic to the Pacific, thus Native Americans could no longer manipulate the prior competing imperial powers. Natives who once served as integral power brokers in the “in between” society now lost their advantage. The disease of American prejudice spread more quickly than the epidemics that killed many Natives in the first place. Anglo-Americans possessed Native land without notice, raped and enslaved Natives, and even demanded complete extermination of the Native people in many areas.
During the Western Expansion, white settlers moved west for numerous reasons. They were motivated to find new land, Gold, and Stuck upon the belief of Manifest Destiny. This attitude helps fuel western settlement, Native American removal and war with Mexico. In doing so, Native Americans faced harsh conditions and were treated horribly. The Great Plain Indians endured the Wounded Knee massacre of 1890, killing of the Buffalo, and many acts such as the Dawes act and Homestead.
The Western Indian Wars was a conflict between “the Western tribes and the U. S troops ended with the 1886 surrender of Apache leader Geronimo in Arizona and the 1890 overthrow of the Sioux at Wounded Knee in South Dakota (“America’s Wars”, 2004).” Throughout the history of the United States, American Indians were treated poorly. Ever since the white men crossed the Atlantic Ocean 200 years ago till the mid 1900’s the poor treatment and killing of Indians never ceased. U.S polices passed between the Revolutionary war and the mid 1900’s hurt American Indians and put them at an extreme disadvantage. There were series of wars, before the western Indian wars in the United States.
From colonial times until the end of the Indian Wars in 1890, the people in America went through a series of unfair and unfortunate events. Mainly for the Indians which are also called the first peoples. These events could have been handled with much more consideration for the Indians. There are many times when the Americans went too far including the Removal Act of 1830, the Reservation System, and the Act for the Government and Protection of Indians.
During the Gilded age, the Native Americans were unfairly treated by the Americans from being moved out of their reservations to being denied equal rights as human beings which all lead to horrific battles between the Natives and Americans. In order to compromise for the growing settler population on reservations, the Native Americans were forced by the American army to keep moving farther west to avoid further conflict. Unfortunately, conflict still arose between the two populations. The American army sought out to eradicate the Native American tribes by destroying the economy such as their villages and buffalo population (p489). In order for Indians to save their selves, some sought refuge to Canada such as, the Nez Perce Indians, which ended
When the Europeans arrived in North America, many changes came into the lives of indigenous peoples. These changes included things such as new weapons and horses, which made hunting easier, but Europeans also killed indigenous people, treated them as though they were less than human, and took their lands. These immoral things happened because of European desire for riches and glory. Because of this, the European impact on Native Americans should be seen as a moral question. Upon their arrival, Europeans saw indigenous people as heathens because of their religions and their difference in culture.
The Europeans were notorious for invading foreign lands and finding the natives inferior to their ways, usual because the natives weren’t living like the Europeans. The Native Americans were no exception, the Europeans once found the natives tractable and peaceful. However, they knew little about the natives and took their peaceful nature as weakness. Furthermore, the Europeans thought the natives were inferior was because of their way of life, their religion and the color of their skin. The Europeans cared little about the Native American way of life, they only cared about exploiting the resources of the Natives home; this meant both natural and human.
European immigrants to North America or the “New World” heavily burdened the Native Americans. The relationship between both the invading Europeans and the indigenous people was that many historical events, which would shape this country. Native Americans would be forced from their lands and their own beliefs. Firstly, the Spanish came and proclaimed North American as their new land, New Spain.
Current American society is constantly affected by events from the past, but sometimes what society thinks is in the past is not so far behind. It is heavily seen in articles, poems, movies, novels, and more that the way Native Americans were treated historically continually plays a part in current American society. Due to the racism and stereotypes carried throughout American society the Native American cultural circle is constantly under fire, and will never truly be repaired. Everything has the ability to become broken, to form cracks and chips, but in the case of the Native American cultural circle, it was shattered. A whole people was decimated and still trying to recover from events that occurred years in the past.
The arrival of Europeans conquistadors to the Americas mainly led to negative consequences for the Native Americans. Essentially, Europeans invaded Latin America to exploit its riches, not caring to preserve the Native American culture but creating a path of destruction wherever they went. Consequently, the Native American culture could not defend itself and withered away. In this paper, I argue that the European invasion was to a great extent destructive to the native culture because it contributed to the decline of native population, the loss of native history and diminished the Native American identity.
Adam Sorenson Prof. Riggs COMP 01112 2/12/18 Misrepresentation of Native Americans Native American’s for many years now have been viewed as lone warriors or squaw, some people don’t even know that they still exist! People just think of the Native American people in storybook tales and nothing more then that. The Native Americans have been living in the United States for awhile now and were the first ones on the country’s soil. They were here way before Christopher Columbus and the other European Colonists even discovered America and they are still present in the U.S.

Throughout the 19th century Native Americans were treated far less than respectful by the United States’ government. This was the time when the United States wanted to expand and grow rapidly as a land, and to achieve this goal, the Native Americans were “pushed” westward. It was a memorable and tricky time in the Natives’ history, and the US government made many treatments with the Native Americans, making big changes on the Indian nation. Native Americans wanted to live peacefully with the white men, but the result of treatments and agreements was not quite peaceful. This precedent of mistreatment of minorities began with Andrew Jackson’s indian removal policies to the tribes of Oklahoma (specifically the Cherokee indians) in 1829 because of the lack of respect given to the indians during the removal laws.
