As the wife of Odysseus, she serves as a caretaker and lover in their household. She is part of what makes Odysseus long to go home, as his sole mission is to get back to Ithaca since he misses it so deeply. “His eyes were always tearful; he wept sweet life away, in longing to go back home, since she no longer pleased him” (pg. 378). Penelope is part of the domestic happiness that Odysseus craves, which makes him more determined to get home. “But she never swayed my heart, since when a man is far from home, living abroad, there is no sweeter thing than his own native land and family” (pg. 415).

Over the 20 years that Odysseus was missing, Penelope stayed loyal to him, despite having no way of knowing if he was dead or alive. She also faced pressure from the suitors to remarry, and still didn't give in. Because of this, her loyalty to Odysseus was rewarded, as the ghost of Atreus' son says, "How faithfully she kept her husband's image in mind! So the glory of her excellence will not fade, instead the gods will create a song of delight for mortal ears, in honor of Penelope" (Bk XXIV: 98-24).

Penelope is not too keen on the idea of marrying one of the suitors but “love[s] to watch them all.” This indicates that she might have enjoyed having the suitors around because it would have made her feel better during her grief because of the extra attention. This is why Penelope would have been sad when they were all killed because she had become attached to the suitors over the years. However, the sadness swiftly faded after being comforted and reminded that the eagle had liberated her from them.

Telemachus is not happy about this. As Penelope tried to decide what song the bard should sing for the suitors, Telemachus sent her to her room, signaling the first time he takes authority over a situation (1.15). The suitors were not used to or happy with his suddenly brave tongue (1.16). Penelope encourages this as we go on.
