What Is President Lincoln's Role In The Civil War

He made it very clear that secession was illegal and was a rejection of democracy. He much rather preferred the South to be reentered into the Union and reassured the Southerners that the slavery institution was safe. In the beginning, he wanted to take conservative steps and opted to send supplies to Fort Sumter and Fort Pickens. Unfortunately, this caused panic for the Southerners and they attacked. Lincoln was not too focused on the war, but after Bull Run he devised a stronger plan to win the war.

When President Lincoln was first elected, he was put in a difficult situation. Multiple states were in the stages, or already began seceding from the Union. They used the claim of “state rights” and tariffs to disguise their true intentions; to expand and protect the institution of slavery. Shortly after Lincoln was first inaugurated, the Civil War broke up, bringing neighbors against neighbors, friends against friends and families against families. Near the end of one of the bloodiest wars in the history of the country, Lincoln was elected for a second time.

Before Ulysses S Grant, Lincoln had trouble finding good generals for the war. He went through seven generals before getting Grant, and Grant was the general for the rest of the war. He was furious when his troops and generals lost a battle because they had more troops than the south. `On January 1st, 1863, president Lincoln freed all slaves in the south so that southerners could not own them or order them around but they still did that.

If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. What I do about slavery, and the colored race, I do because I believe it helps to save the Union (35).’ This letter is very important because it contradicts everything that Lincoln said in his First Inaugural Address just seven months before this was written. In his address he stated that he didn’t have the authority from the constitution to interrupt slavery, but after the letter he was willing to ignore the whole Constitution and emphasize more or less powers in the dictatorship.

Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809. He was raised in a one-room log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky,  but later he moved to southern Indiana in 1816. Lincoln didn’t go to school often because he had to support his family. He moved to Southern Illinois in 1830 with his family, and Lincoln worked on a river flatboat hauling freight sown the Mississippi to  New Orleans when living in Southern Illinois. After moving to Salem, Illinois he got jobs as a shopkeeper and a postmaster.

There was no proof guaranteeing that Lincoln did not want an all-white country. Removing slavery was probably the quickest way to end the Civil War. Defending and protecting the Union was something that Lincoln wanted more than anything else, more than giving the slaves their rights. Even as President, he never claimed that his goal was to abolish slavery, but to leave it alone and prevent its expansion

You can see this in Document B, wherein 1858 Lincoln says this: “I have no purpose . . . to interfere with the institution of slavery in the states where it exists . . .” Later on in the same document he also states, “There is no reason in the world why the negro is not entitled to all the natural rights . . . in the Declaration of Independence- the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” While Lincoln was running for president, he promised to leave slavery alone in the South, but he also stays true to his personal morals through his time, that slavery

Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States of America. He implemented many things to improve America, including his Emancipation Proclamation and the Gettysburg Address. After the Civil War ended, Lincoln was going to utilize soft reconstruction to try and bring the once united country back together again. This soft reconstruction used certain methods, which “evolved a plan for harmonious reconstruction of the Union”.

The passage states, “Government cannot endure permanently half slave, half free,” and that the public mind must rest in the belief that slavery is in the course of ultimate extinction” (Coates 2). The real reason why the states had started seceding was because they wanted to keep slavery not because Lincoln became president. If Lincoln had not become president then there would have been many other people who would have tried to end slavery and the same thing would have happened. Though Lincoln felt they weren't equal, he believed the Americas founders intended that all men were created with certain rights. He decided to challenge Stephen Douglas a senator, the Supreme Court, and president Buchanan for promoting slavery and declared "a house divided cannot stand". In 1860 the became president a year later the Civil war began. He distributed $2 million dollars from the Treasury for war material; he called for 75,000 volunteers into service without any declaration of war and he arrested and imprisoned suspected confederate sympathizers without a warrant. Lincoln answered the spread of slavery to the territories, and had a vision of the expanding United States. Abraham was a self taught lawyer and legislator with a character as a strong rival of slavery,

President Lincoln stated that: “if I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it,..., and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would do it.”. This quote clearly shows that the freedom of slaves was not his concern and unnecessary if it did not help the Union; as the result, slavery still exists if there is no war.
