While slavery is considered to be the underlying cause of the American Civil War, there were other factors which also contributed to the war. In the beginning, Americans embraced slavery which was considered to be a necessary evil. By the time the Civil War took place, the slavery institution had already started to collapse with many Whites questioning the practice. In this regard, slavery was not the sole cause of the Civil War. On the contrary, several factors and events all worked to drive the country to war.
One of the most important factors that led to the Civil War was the sectional divide that existed on the issues of slavery. The American Revolution was one of the instances that created a crisis in the slavery institution. Some slaves took advantage of the struggles and chose to oppose their masters and fight on Britain’s side. The promise of freedom lured them. Since a large number of these slaves had decided to desert their masters, the slavery institution in some parts of the Southern states started to collapse.
Another factor that caused more strain on slavery was the issue of liberty. Once the United States declared itself an independent state after its victory during the revolution war, it started to place special emphasis on freedom.

While it was practiced in the North, the practice had not taken root as it had in the South. Conversely, the southern elite considered slavery to be a sign of affluence, a factor that made them support the slavery institution. The people in the South wanted to continue exploiting African Americans while those in the North states resented the practice, arguing that slavery stunted economic growth and technological development in the South. The clashing views between Northerners and Southerners were considered to be an important source of tension, which eventually led to the
Slavery's expansion into western territories was the primary cause of the war. The Union's victory marked the end of slavery in the United States and had a lasting impact on its politics and social structure, leading to the Reconstruction era and the modern American nation. Slavery was an important factor that
The split in power meant the government was divided against itself; this compromised the integrity of the union and contributed to the Civil War (Doc. M). The issue of slavery was highly contested as people’s wealth depended on the practice. As anti-slavery sentiment grew in the North, conflicts over the issue became abundant. Most of the South had a 30% to 50% slave
The first main cause of the Civil War was economic differences between the Northern and Southern states. During the first few decades of the 19th century, the North had an industrial revolution that brought an economy that relied on laborers. While at the same time, the South continued to rely on slaves for their farming and the production of cotton. The Northerners did not need slaves for their economy, but the Southerners could not make any profit without cotton or slaves. In the 1860’s, the North had twice as many railroads as the South, and the South had a bigger cotton production because of their slave population (Document A).
When slavery divided the United States of America into the Confederacy and the Union, there was an outbreak in wars which eventually sparked the Civil War. What Caused the Civil War? After looking at the documents and evidence given, it is clear that the Civil War was caused by slavery. The following reasons are why this is true; economics,
With pro-slavery citizens and abolitionists going at it, this violence in the west would soon spread, causing slavery to impact expansion at a very fast rate. As life and business continued, slaves in the southern states were what the people relied on. Southerners believed slavery was the foundation for their economy. In the north, slavery had proven unprofitable by the end of the American Revolution, due to the invention of the cotton [Last Name] 3 gin.
The Civil War was caused by the issue of slavery because abolitionists finally stepped up which led to the slave states not getting along with the free states. So for years on
After the efforts to gain independence from Britain and the creation of the United States of America, eighty years later this union was not so united. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, it was the first time that Americans fought Americans. Among many reasons, the Civil War is known to be a result of the arguments over the delineation of the States’ Rights or the presidential election of Abraham Lincoln. In actuality, the Civil War, the most deadly war in American history, was due to disputes over slavery in the American territories. Therefore, the Civil War was inevitable because of the consequences that occurred one being slavery.
Did you know that more men died the Civil War than any other American conflict, and one third of the dead perished from disease? The American Civil War was the war fought between the Union and Confederacy from 1861 to 1865 over the issue of slavery and state’s rights. The main issues leading up to the Civil War were Missouri’s statehood, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and the Election of 1860. One of the main causes of the Civil War was the issue of Missouri becoming a state.
Nick Baxter What caused the Civil War? DBQ The Civil War was caused by three main reasons are economic differences, interpretation of Constitution, and moral beliefs. The North and the South were very different economically.
Another major factor that led to the Civil war was the social status and views at the time. The North and South had very different social views. In the North, while a good amount of the people owned slaves, many of them began to see it as wrong and inhumane. They also began to believe that they no longer needed slaves to do work for them and that the slaves should have freedom, as well as their own rights. But even with the North beginning to want to change things, slaves were still not treated like human beings most of the time.
Problems emerging from slavery's western development caused issues for the U.S. from the beginning. Fights arose over the westward expansion of slavery and over the position of the government in securing the attention of slave owners. Northern and Southern states started to oppose on the duties of the government in seizing and delivering runaway slaves back to their owners. Slaves remained essential to the country's economy, powering the south's plantation economy as well as giving crude materials to the Northern industrial economy. As the nation pushed westward in its quest for new land, people started wondering whether those grounds should be slave-states or free.
There were three main causes of the civil war including slavery, sectionalism and secession. Slavery was a huge part of it and it led to the Missouri Compromise where any states below the border would be slave states and the anything north of that was free states. (Mrs. Wise) "The south feared the declaration of freedom for the slaves by government leaders in the North." Next, sectionalism. Sectionalism-
The Civil War was a monumental bloodshed, which was fought between the United States of America and the Confederate States, from 1861 to 1865. The primary cause of the war was the Southern states' desire to preserve the institution of slavery, which did not please the beliefs of the North. At the beginning of the Civil War, twenty-two million people lived in the North and 9 million people, which included four million of whom were slaves, lived in the South. The North, led by President Abraham Lincoln and his trusted generals, had more money, more factories, more horses, more railroads, and more food than the south. These advantages made the United States much more powerful than the Confederate States, which ultimately led to Northern victory.
To a greater extent, slavery was the greatest cause of the outbreak of the civil war in 1860. Disputes of slavery caused economic and political troubles between the northern and southern states leading up to the civil war. The fact the the northern and southern states were different in almost every way caused them to turn out like completely different territories, one of their greatest differences was the fact that most southern states economy relied on hard labour, agricultural jobs like tobacco in Maryland, and cotton in Virginia; this caused their economy to be more based on the labour of slaves than the more developed territories in the north (Harrold), who after this time was starting to not need the slave labour in their territories because after early 1800’s, the industrial revolution had been spreading to America, and the country developed very quickly. But in this expansion, only the north states were getting the effect of the industrial revolution, meaning the north would not need slave
Scholars have debated this subject for years, but only three causes come out on top: slavery, states’ rights, and the Dred Scott case (“Causes of the Civil War”). By studying these three key causes, one may find a deeper understanding of arguably the most famous war in US history, the Civil War. One of the most obvious reasons for the Civil War was slavery. Although both the North and the South had slaves, they did not agree about the future of slavery (Sloan). While the North foresaw an end to slavery, the South did not (“Causes of the Civil War”).
