Getting out of character to prove to appoint but ends up dead. Living a life that unholy casing the devil for using your mind body and soul. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Abigail Williams is known to change her character in many ways in the story to prove her innocence. The play takes place in Salem at the Proctors house, church and then they turn the church into the court. Abigail is most responsible for the drama in Salem because she tries to make herself seem so innocent instead of owning up to the problems she started.
First, Abigail lies to conceal her affair with John Proctor and to prevent being charged with witchcraft. "You did, you did! You drank a charm to kill John Proctor’s wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!" (Miller, 19).In Salem

You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is you love me yet! Abigail is confirming the affair that she and John had at the beginning of act one.”She heard you singing’ and suddenly she’s up to screaming’...” After Abigail said that I think the girls did that to cover up what was going on and playing with witchcraft like something was actually wrong with me. She makes me drink blood! Abigail says that Tituba gave them blood to drink to make Tituba confess. In this last section, I think Abigail told on Tituba to use her as a cover up so she wouldn’t be getting into right then.
Last, Stealing from her uncle and skipping town to run away from the charge and guilt. ”My daughter tells me now she hears them speakin’ of ships last week, and tonight I discover my... Abigail stole his money and ran off with Mercy Lewis. ”If I must answer that, sir, I will leave and I will not come back again.”Danforth finally knows the truth about Abigail and John Proctor affair they had.”Abigail lead the girls to the woods, your Honor, and they have danced there naked.... (Hale crosses slowly, looks at Abigail and the
Abigail thought that she needed to kill Elizabeth. “You did, you did! You drank the charm to kill John Proctors wife! You drank a charm to kill goody Proctor!”. Abigail was selfish she wanted him so bad she didn’t care about accusing any of the other girls and blamed them as well for something she wanted.
In court, John finally admits to committing adultery with Abigail and an uproar inundates the courtroom. With the judge demanding she answer the questions, Abigail proclaims, “If I must answer that, I will leave and I will not come back again!” (111). Perceiving her imminent judgment, Abigail attempts to flee. When her plans start to derail, Abigail disregards her staunch feelings for John and seeks an effective solution for her problem.
Abigail seems like an innocent girl to everybody however it is later found out that she is one of the people who puts herself before others and makes things worse to get herself out of trouble. In act one Reverend Hale was questioning Tituba, a slave from Barbados. Tituba was explaining what the dancing and the disturbance in the woods and Abigail says she “wasn’t conjuring spirits”(Miller ??)
Before John Proctor and others visit the household, Abigail confesses to dancing in the woods, but also expresses her hate towards Goody Proctor, who is John’s wife. For
Abigail single-handedly destroyed the Proctor’s relationship as husband and wife and let innocent people hang from crimes they did not commit. The Salem witchcraft trials that took place around that time is why America’s judiciary system is like how it is today. One’s actions and words can ultimately change the way the government rules in the court forever. These policies that are now intact today are all because of Abigail Williams, the character in the play, The Crucible, which is based on a true
Angered by this, Proctor physically attacks Abigail and denounces her as a whore, and has to back up what he says with evidence. Overcome with emotion, and distraught of how far he allowed the court’s corruption to continue, he confesses to having an affair with Abigail and her plot to trying to rid of Elizabeth in hopes of replacing her. By telling the truth, John shows growth in his character, as he accepts that his good name must be ruined to protect innocent victims, ““I have made a bell in my honor! I have rung the doom of my good name – and you will believe me. Mr. Danforth” (page 116)!
Abigail is powerful in comparison to other girls her age. When Betty yells that Abigail drank blood in the woods, Abigail immediately denies it and tries to get Betty to stop. She is not afraid and continues to yell that “[she] did! [She] drank a charm to kill John Proctor’s wife!”(19). Betty is not afraid to stand up to Abigail, who does not want anyone else to know what took place when they were in the woods.
In The Crucible, there could be many suspects to blame for the innocent deaths that happened in Salem. Proctor could be blamed for the innocent deaths because he lied about his affair with Abigail. Speaking of Abigail... in my opinion Abigail Williams is the one to blame for the innocent deaths because of the lies she told, the accusations she made, and the affair she had with John Proctor. Abigail Williams told many, many lies in The Crucible. The reason the witch trials began in the first place was because of the lie she told about being in the woods.
She sleeps with John Proctor and becomes emotionally attached to him more and more as they continue to sneak around. She told him, "I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I came near." (Page 922) Abigail made this statement as John Proctor was attempting to leave their relations behind and just focus on his wife, but she was stuck on it just being him and her. John was the only man that she wants to be with; she held fell in love with a married man!
Society as a whole seeks to satisfy themselves. This may be at the expense of their peers or individuals they are associated with. Arthur Miller brilliantly displays this dark side of humanity’s side in his play The Crucible. This play is based on the Salem witch trials in the early 1690s. During the Salem witch trials over two hundred people were accused of witchcraft and twenty were executed.
She will say or do anything to cover up the fact that she took a blood charm to kill John Proctor's wife, whom she had affair with. Abigail threatens the girls that she will come “in the black of some terrible night” if they mention what happened to anyone that night (1.1.1244). Abigail Williams will also lie about anything to
Abigail is willing to accuse any one in her path of witchcraft even if it means taking the lives of those close to her. Abigail Williams’ emotional desire guides her actions even if it conflicts with morality. Abigail williams is driven to do unthinkable things because of her love for John Proctor. Abigail works in the Proctor’s home and while doing so she finds herself attracted to John. Abigail’s obsession with Proctor leads them to have an affair, which they try to keep
The Crucible Abigail was a corrupt, cynical, and dishonest character throughout the Salem witch trials. She accused innocent people of the community of Salem of being witches. Most of the time she did this in seek of revenge on the people, but other times she did it so that she wouldn’t get caught for lying. Abigail was not a very old character she was 14-18 years old and still single.
Abigail, in tears, “I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart! I never knew what pretense Salem was, I never knew the lying lessons I was taught by all these Christian women and their covenanted men! And now you bid me tear the light out of my eyes? I will not, I cannot! You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet!”
Abigail finally sees the outturn of her lies she has made for what she wants. Proctor is hanged which she didn’t attend to do, but now pays the price. She also found out what lying can do “They’re pretending, Mr. Danforth... Mary, please don’t hurt me!.”(miller 120-121). Lying has made her corrupt and is used to persuade to make harm with.
