The Cold War was an icy rivalry that developed between the United States and the Soviet Union after World War II. This rivalry first developed because the two conflicting nations had different ideas of successful economies. The United States believed that capitalism, in which private owners control trade and industry was more efficient than Communism, in which the state or government control trade and industry. In addition, many of the events that occurred at The Yalta Conference played a significant role in the cause of this era of competition that lasted from 1947 to 1991. During the Cold War was based on two different types of beliefs called Communism and Capitalism and both the U.S. with its own allies and the U.S.S.R. This fear includes communism not only within our nation but internationally as well. As secretary of state, John Foster Dulles stated that if communism captures any American state it will “increase the danger to the entire free world” (Document B). Moreover, Dulles feared Latin America particularly due to their close proximity and the idea that if one state becomes communist then the rest will follow, otherwise known as the domino theory. However, a note to keep in mind about Dulles is that he favored the policy of massive retaliation, a nuclear strategy supporting the idea that if the United States was attacked, we would retaliate with an even greater force which only intensified the fear. In addition, not only were we afraid of what the Soviets would do to those states around them, but a striking fear became present through the possibility of spies within the United States.

In 1962 it was discovered that the Soviet Union had nuclear bombs in Cuba, only 90 miles off the coast of the US. The Soviet Union placed the bombs in Cuba out of fear of a nuclear war. This way, if it became necessary, the Soviet Union could be prepared.

In 1947 The Washington Post wrote a comic where the Committee on Un-American Activities, an anti-communist organization, is running over people walking in the streets with the car. Above the picture the slogan, “It’s okay- we’re hunting communists” is written, inferring that the American government was accusing and attacking innocent citizens.
