I love basketball because I am terrible at it. Despite my 6’ 0” stature, it seems that my brother stole any natural ability I might have had. Every morsel of skill I have has been worked and paid for with each drop of sweat spilt during the fourth rebound drill, each painful bruise I collect after being caught with a flying elbow, and each ragged breath I take trying to outsprint my teammate.
Basketball, for me, is a challenge.
Ever since I was a child I have loved a good challenge; I craved everything from riddles to difficult math problems. Sports, however, were the clear exception. I never could seem to do well. In third grade I had started my basketball career by scoring on my own team's basket, by seventh grade I had progressed to avoiding the ball at all costs. When I got to high school I thought I would finally be done with

This commitment to whatever I put my mind to is what makes me who am. I know that however good I am at something, whether it be a subject, sport, my job or club, that I can always do better.
I love to be pushed, to go beyond what I ever thought I could achieve, to become better than I ever thought possible.
I truly love playing basketball, I love the rush of accomplishing a goal I set for myself, for finally making 8 for 10 free throws after failing for so long. Basketball is not just a sport, but a metaphor for how I want to live my life. I want to face every challenge head on, with disregard to the fear and doubt accompanied by the possibility failure. To instead know that yes, I will fail, many times, but with each surpassing of a milestone I will improve and make better mistakes. With challenges comes in inevitably of failure, but with failure comes the inevitability of improvement and
In life, when there’s an opportunity to take a shot, take it. This is exactly what nineteen-year-old Jason McElwain did, and this shot had the power to change his life. At birth, a severe form of autism took over McElwain’s life, but he was not diagnosed with high functioning autism until the age of two. Since that moment, basketball became his escape and his biggest passion. Though too small to make the junior varsity high school team, he held his head high and excitedly became the manager for varsity.
I love watching basketball, and I 've always wanted to play it. In middle school though my sports were Cross Country and Track, so I have basically zero experience with any kind of team sports (the only exception would be the stuff in PE). I actually went to the state championship in the 100m in middle School so I am a fairly athletic guy (about 10 pounds heavier now though). Guys at my schools play pickup basketball once a week during free time in gym and I 've been trying to join in, but I just have absolutely no idea what I should be doing while on offense. I actually am a decent rebounder and usually score a few points a game from offensive rebounds.
Inspiration "Failure happens all the time. It happens every day in practice. What makes it better is how you react to it. " Those words inspire me and many others.
Perhaps to squash down my fear of failure, I should redefine my definition of success. If all I needed to succeed was my health and my happiness, I would not fear failure, or competition, as much. But I also realize that my beliefs are so much a part of me that to redefine success will take a long
Why did you pick the one sport that takes 4 hours to play and makes you wake up to play super early”. It was a rough summer, full of frustration, because I had no idea why I was trying so hard, knowing there was no way on earth I was even going to make the JV team. Beside my thoughts, I kept going and trying my hardest all the way until the day of
Since picking up “The Rock” seven years ago, I’ve come to love basketball, and it’s given me experiences, skills and values emanating beyond the game itself. Whenever I’m feeling stressed, shooting a few hoops with my little sister at the park is a surefire way to relax and have fun. From weight training to running liners, basketball has helped me develop discipline and an appreciation for teamwork. Furthermore, basketball has been my medium to travel across the globe and even take a photo with UMich star Jamal Crawford. From Memorial Day weekend tournaments in downtown San Francisco to spontaneous pick-up games with local high school athletes in Okayama, Japan, time and time again, basketball has transcended language and culture, allowing
Again, failure is certain in our lives, but the lessons we take from these moments of weakness are what help a person to face challenges in the
Who is Timothy Lucious? I tend to ask myself the same question of “Who am I”? At this present day I come to realize that I am a lot of things in this world today. I live by a certain rules in my life: that God comes first in everything I do, Family is the most important thing to me, and Football is my passion and First love. I am a person who loves football, it has been my love and passion ever since I was a child.
When I read “Ulysses”, by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, I realized there is never a wrong time to try something new. Growing up I was taught to be competitive in everything I did. Baseball was my spring sport and basketball was my winter sport to stay active for the next challenging season. I very much
When I was growing up, I wanted to do whatever I could do to be the best. Whether it took me hours or days to practice, I practiced until I was the best. If someone was to do something better than me, I would go home and become an expert at it so I could beat them the next day. Never knew why I acted like this, maybe it was because my dad was into sports, or maybe because I had a little brother that was also talented.
Additionally, sports are extremely important in building one’s character through hard work, learning to work with others on a team and by learning how to cope with the joy of winning and the inevitability of losing. One thing to know about any sport is that there is no free ride. You earn recognition, all your playing time, and a starting position through hard work. I grew up playing all kinds of different
As well as building muscle playing basketball also helps improve balance and coordination as doing multiple things at once are required such as jumping and shooting at the same time. Basketball also develops self-discipline and concentration as it is required to make the right decisions in a game and make good judgements that will help in winning. This is why basketball has a lot of benefits for
Aim for something like, exploring and learning new ways to achieve the target. Don’t stride, take small steps. This will not only help you minimize the failure possibilities, but it will also boost your morale. 2. Think before you leap
But the most fantastic and memorable thing about Basketball was when my teammates and I got together and played the game. The
