The New England colonies grew in the 1600’s with many of their ways derived from the Puritans. Socially, the importance of education which continues to this day was from the Puritans. The other side of this the treatment of the American Indians changed enormously. Politically, small town democracy was from the Puritans, but religion is removed from politics. Economically, agriculture economy is kept with the thought of wanting wealth is accepted. Major values are from the Puritans and have influenced the New England colonies. The New England colonies desire for better education came from the Puritans. They wanted to educate the new generation since the older generation was dying out. Since the old minsters were dying. Thus, there was a need
The New England Colonies were a very religious place, and traded very many items. They had a high economy, and also disagreed very many times with the Natives. John Winthrop, the governor said, “For we must consider that we shall be a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us, so that if we deal falsely with our god in this work we have undertaken, and so cause him to withdraw his present help from us, we shall be made a story and a byword through the world.”
Besides English settlers there were numerous other representatives of the European countries settling in the new land. And as the Puritans came to practice their own believes so did other nationalities, as explained in the study material. In my own interpretation America represents change and the believe system as well as the way religion was previously practiced was now changing. This change was greatly influenced by the intellectual movement called Enlightenment, which started in Europe and this influence had bearing on the Great Awakening. Besides Puritans now there were Catholics in Maryland, Quakers in Pennsylvania and the Episcopal Church in the southern states.
The starkest differences between the three colonial regions lie in economy and religious influences. For example, New England colonies like Massachusetts and Rhode Island had a bigger focus on shipbuilding, fishing, and lumber mills than the Southern or Middle colonies, whose focus was based around agriculture, due to the difference in climate and geography. Middle colonies also focused on exporting iron ore and iron products. In addition, New England colonies had a bigger population of Puritans, so the culture in this region was more strict socially; drunkenness, swearing, and gambling were frowned upon, especially in the Massachusetts Bay colony. The government of the Massachusetts Bay colony could also enforce public morality (e.g. teachers
In the 1600s the English colonized America all down its east coast broken up into certain regions with defining traits. The middle colonies were somewhat different then the other English colonies with their diverse religious and ethnic standings, emphasis on subsistence farming and democratic coalitions. Being more stable than the other colonies, whom spread out very haphazardly with many conflicts arising from it. With the whole world exploring and colonizing, England needed more stable colonies if they had wished too expand their empire. One of the defining traits of the middle colonies was its immeasurable tolerance towards many nationalities and religions.
In the 17th c., the Massachusetts Bay Company centered around the trade between England and the Massachusetts Bay Indians. Upon the realization that the original company charter issued by the king did not explicitly bind the company’s meeting to England, the Massachusetts Bay Company founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony during the Great Puritan Migration. The Massachusetts Bay Colony consisted of a large group of Puritans-- those who sought to “purify” the Church of England of the remnants of the Roman Catholic papacy whose name was grievously tainted in the late middle ages. The Puritans were fervently loyal to their ministers who were under religious persecution by the Church of England. Therefore the Puritans followed their ministers to
The Puritans believed that idleness was a sin; more specifically, the blatant waste of time and lack of any substantive achievement was, in a word, useless. Thus, the very economic culture of the New England colonies was impacted. The abundant supply of timber and the importance of fishing in place of agriculture guaranteed that timber and fishing were the most treasured and valued products from the New England colonies. Since the Puritans thought that their wealth indicated that they had won God’s favor, the Puritan merchants worked relentlessly to ensure that that part of Boston became a commercial center in New England so that they would be valid players in the economic scene of the New World. Nevertheless, unlike the Chesapeake colonies, New England did not evolve as a region that was focused on economic activity because it was founded as “a plantation of religion” (Doc J), as opposed to a center for “worldly trade.”
The society in New England was very stable because there was a high amount of immigration, and they came in groups. Religion was also played a large role in the development of New England because it was established as a safe haven from persecution. The Puritans in England founded New England because they were able to practice their religion without any interference. On the other hand, Chesapeake’s society was made up of plantation owners and slaves. In fact, 75% of the early immigrants were indentured servants.
In the 16th the American colonies, governments took three courses, all based on English traditions. The colonies became a testing ground for developing governments, from which the founders drew heavily when they enlisted the United States Constitution. At the base of each colony was its charter, a written agreement between the dependency and the queen of England (or with Parliament in the case of George), which authorized its existence and set up rules of procedure. The three figures of colonial governments were: Royal Colonies, Proprietary Colonies, and Charter Colonies. I will compare and contrast two regions were known as Southerners and the New England areas.
New England and the Chesapeake regions of the thirteen colonies were both settled by Englishmen coming for a better life than what they would have had in England. Although these settlers` came from the same place, their ideals and beliefs were all different in nature and resulted in two distinctly different societies. As the colonies became more populated and established their economic identity, an immediate difference can be seen in how the New England colonies maintain revenue in contrast to the Chesapeake. Politically, these regions were somewhat similar but immensely different in regards to the role of religion in the government. In regards to religion, the different types of Christianity in each region would come to play a major role
The Traits of the New England Colonies Have you ever wondered what made the New England colonies thrive? Maybe it was war or maybe it was the economics and politics that got these colonies through some hard times. “The basis of our political system is the right of the people to make and to alter their constitutions of government,”-George Washington. This quote by George Washington explains the basics of our government and our country. I believe that economics, politics and trade help the New England Colonies through the early stages of it’s growth.
Ideas like swearing, sex, alcohol, lying, and women showing their arms were to be the cause. Even though the Puritans did diminished the Massachusetts Bay Colony they started did
During the seventeen-century, there were different types religious based colonies. One was the Pilgrims and the others were the Puritans. Their believes were very different. They traveled to America during 1620 for a better life. They were many things that the Pilgrims and Puritans religious did to influence their settlement in North America.
In America during the Enlightenment, the people who were known as the Puritans, or those people who did not like the Reformation of the Church of England, had both a large impact in society during their time, and in who we are in America today. The Enlightenment supported the basic philosophies and other ideas embraced by the Puritans. The Puritans had a very good reason to leave England due to corruption of the church, and religious persecution. Each of these things affected the Puritans mainly in the 16th and 17th century. Puritans were a group of Protestants in the 16th and 17th century who did not like the Reformation of the Church of England was progressing.
In today’s society, men and women are so obsessed with spending money, gambling, it’s an addiction. This addiction tears families apart. A vicious addiction that will leave victims ‘out in the dark,’ so to speak. Men and women frown upon this, as well as the Puritan group. This goes against moral beliefs and religion.
The reason the England colony was loved so much was because of the religion, how they made their living and the way there laws were set which was what made the colony so distinct. The strong role religion played in the New England Colony was one of the strongest throughout the colony at that time and was very loved. The first settlers in the colony were mostly puritans. The puritans believed that reading the bible was important.
