Application of these significant developments has created opportunities for the discovery of new sources and the revision of historical disputes. As noted by Dan Jones, a British historian, archaeologists are now ‘better equipped to study historical remains than ever before’. The general public’s interpretation of archaeology also recognise this importance, viewing it as having ‘foremost benefit and that we learn about the past in order to improve the future’ (Maria Ramos and David Duganne) Furthermore, the enigma of Richard III, the basis of polarizing debate and controversy since his death in 1485, remained unresolved into the 21st century until his bones were discovered in August 2012. Most importantly, the physical deformity associated with him, based on the writing of Shakespeare and Sir Thomas More, had created a villainous persona that historians could not adequately dispute from known records. However, when Philippa Langley from the Richard III Society provided mapping evidence of an approximation for the burial site of Richard, historians were intrigued. With the aid of Leicester City Council and the University of Leicester, the project ‘Looking for Richard’ was launched. Using English literature …show more content…
These technologies can never answer whether Richard III killed his nephews or his brother to gain and maintain the throne or how good his leadership skills were. There are reports of these events in historical textual records but they cannot be confirmed. American historian Paul Murray Kendall stated that, ‘the most powerful indictment of Richard is the plain and massive fact that the princes disappeared from view after he assumed the throne.’ Aspects regarding his leadership and character are left to the historical reports of his time period and historian’s
Of course, it is possible that the writer, Thomas More, had little to no recollection of the events of King Richard’s ruling and murders, and that he had a bit of a bias, but Grant has no evidence to justify completely throw out all of his claims. Young when Richard was in power, More also worked for the family that defeated Richard, the Tudors. However, More’s book, The History of King Richard III, should not have been completely thrown out as false by Grant. Although the information in More’s account could be fabricated in order to give Richard a bad name, Grant cannot know that for sure. Unable to go and interview the men himself, he decides to take it upon himself to decide the
Since they don’t have the living people from the past here in the future. They have to piece together what they know about the past societies by their findings. They have to piece together what they find to know what they did on an everyday basis, what they ate and much more. When excavating a site
As a future king, Edward V did not have much time to play. He had to prepare for his coronation and learn how to rule the country. Edward’s tutors knew that they had much to teach him and so they prepared him as much as possible. These preparations took up most of Edward’s day leaving him no time to play. While Prince Richard is in sanctuary, Richard III argues that he does not need to be there because the council can protect Prince Richard.
Richard the Lionheart is one of the most famous of kings, if not the most, in England and France. He was born on September 8, 1157 and died on April 6, 1199. He is mainly known for his part in the Third Crusade attempting to free Jerusalem from Muslim control. Although he had a large and important role in Medieval Europe, it is usually romanticized to increase the heroism of Richard. Richard’s prowess as a military leader, his benevolence and his sense of responsibility were all greatly exaggerated.
King Richard I did ultimately well in all his battles. Unfortunately, he had limited resources which came down to him failing to capture Jerusalem. King Richard almost succeeded to lead the crusaders to gain territory, including Cyprus and Sicily. If King Richard gathered more soldiers, he would have succeeded in retaking the Kingdom of Jerusalem. This overall affected King Richard since he had lack of control of his soldiers, this led to Saladin troops virtually destroying the Christian army.
In contrast to Hastings however, lies Buckingham, Richard’s largest case of manipulation and controlling. He is only
Henry VII also wanted to be king. The only way Henry VII could become king was for the princes to disappear. Henry was third in line to claim heir to the throne. It’s possible that Henry VII murdered the princes Edward and Richard. There is no proof that Henry VII had anything to do with the disappearance of the Edward and Richard.
The reasons that archaeologist give as the significance of studying ancient Native American skeletal remains is that they want to study about the lives of others in the past. They want to know who Native Americans are, their origins, and their heritage. The skeletal remains offer the
This suggested remains withstood and defended the intrusion. From this, we are ables also tells us that the remains were a priority to be rebuilt. Therefore, it cost money and labour to repair the structure. For this reason, the remains are also significant to research because it allows archeologist to study the tool, materials and skills it took to create a base that provided a strong defence. Dinsmoors argument raises an intriguing point.
Richard the Lionheart’s inadequate decision making as
While reading the articles I was amazed at what people had found. A dead King found under a parking lot how great is that. Especially if it’s King Richard the thirds’ dead body. Also finding a plague death pit that is also very extraordinary. This actually changes what we may have know of King Richard or what happened to people who died in the 1300s.
The discovery of Richard III’s remains was a tremendously important discovery because it potentially rewrote a part history. Science and technology helped identify the remains as Richard III and what happened to him. The historians and archeologist pin pointed the possible location of the body and worked vigorously to find it under the parking lot. The professionals were not the only important people, in fact, the interested non-professional enthusiasts such as Philippa kept an open mind and were determined to find the truth. Compared to Dr. Bond’s articles, the non-historians in the Richard III video were a lot more involved and weren’t as much learning about the subject as much as helping the historians.
In his play, 1 King Henry IV, William Shakespeare is concerned with the popular concepts of power and legitimacy, or the right to rule. Shakespeare specifically calls into question the concept of legitimacy of power through one of the main characters of his play, Prince Hal. Prince Hal’s public image challenges the notion of this concept. In this essay, through the analyzation of various passages, I argue that Prince Hal upsets the notion legitimacy of power because his public image contradicts King Henry’s mode of being and mirrors the problematic reputation and actions of Richard II, which adds to King Henry’s fear of losing the throne, and ultimately results in King Henry’s hesitancy to make him heir to the throne. Largely due to his public
Archaeology in the last 25 years has had a diverse change in the way the processes of archaeology have to take place. In the last two decades there has been new rules and legislations brought forward leading to new archaeology jobs such as stewardship. This is one of the paying jobs that were introduced with many other jobs as well. As ethical issues have to be addressed more in recent years there has been a need for these jobs to efficiently get the information out that is needed. The archaeological record now has to produce and preserve all of the artefacts that are found and make the information accessible to the public.
Some people think that archaeology is not worth. This is because it could be disrespectful to them when we dig up their ancestors and examine them. Well I think that archaeology is worth it because archaeology shows us civilizations in the past, archaeology helps you learn more about your beliefs and archaeology changed our lives. Don’t you want to know about your past? Don’t you want to learn where YOU came from?
