Application of these significant developments has created opportunities for the discovery of new sources and the revision of historical disputes. As noted by Dan Jones, a British historian, archaeologists are now ‘better equipped to study historical remains than ever before’. The general public’s interpretation of archaeology also recognise this importance, viewing it as having ‘foremost benefit and that we learn about the past in order to improve the future’ (Maria Ramos and David Duganne) Furthermore, the enigma of Richard III, the basis of polarizing debate and controversy since his death in 1485, remained unresolved into the 21st century until his bones were discovered in August 2012. Most importantly, the physical deformity associated with him, based on the writing of Shakespeare and Sir Thomas More, had created a villainous persona that historians could not adequately dispute from known records. However, when Philippa Langley from the Richard III Society provided mapping evidence of an approximation for the burial site of Richard, historians were intrigued.
