Slavery was a big part of our nation’s history. The North and the South had different opinions of slavery which led to the Civil War. The first arrival of slaves was in 1619. A Dutch ship brought twenty Africans to Virginia and they were sold. It spread to the thirteen colonies and, by 1776, almost 600,000 slaves lived in our country.

The cotton gin separated the cotton from the seed, which did the work that people used to do by hand. This invention did the work 100 times faster which means more slaves were needed. In the South there were very few large towns and cities, but a lot of agriculture. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 allowed even more land for plantation owners. THere were more job opportunities in the South for blacks because free African Americans could find jobs as artisans.

In the years 1777 to 1865, the African American people, also known as Blacks, were used as slaves for the white men of America. Eventually, enslavement was abolished and was outlawed, as it is today. According to the map, The Abolition of Slavery, slavery in the northern states was still around during the years 1777 to around 1787. The New England states of Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut got rid of slavery first, followed by the Midwest states and the Mid-Atlantic states.

Yes, but we will never know if slavery could have ever been abolished without the deaths. Even though a generation of men died it was for the human rights of African Americans. President Lincoln was one of the main supporters of the ending of slavery; He saw the hypocrisy of it. He said, “We began by declaring that all men are created equal; but now from that beginning we have run down to the other declaration, that for some men to enslave others is a ‘sacred right of the government’ these principles cannot stand together.” Lincoln understood the abuse of humans could not go unnoticed forever.

In 1619, when slavery began in America, slaves were used as a force of labor to build and work on the new land. Unfortunately, slavery continued on for the next three centuries in the United States. Today, people view slavery as an inhumane and cruel way of treating people, but back then many people saw nothing wrong with the holding of slaves. For the most part, slavery was morally and ethically wrong since the enslavement of people was terrible. In general, slavery is unfitting because Thomas Jefferson once said “...that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights...”

The Cotton Gin invented by Eli Whitney was a machine that was able to quickly separate cotton fibers from the seeds, this made work faster and more productive. Although this invention affected the South in many helpful ways the biggest effect of the Cotton Gin was the civil war. The Cotton Gin was a big demand in the South because cotton and agriculture were what the economy relied on. The invention needed people to work the cotton gin therefore, the South needed an abundance of slaves. I think slavery was terrible because we weren 't treated as human beings . we were treated like animals. Slavery was a way for whites to suppress us from what we were capable of doing. Blacks were smart, but they were wiped into thinking other wise. Slavery makes me appreciate what we have today.

Slavery in America first began in the first permanent English settlement, Jamestown, in 1619. I also believe that it is unbelievable of the amount of slavery that still exists in the world today. To think that slavery like this is still going on is crazy, considering that most will agree that slavery is unethical. I honestly don 't understand how people of the world just sit back and let it happen even though we are fully aware of what is happening. It makes me feel as if all the efforts toward abolishing slavery weren 't as successful as I had originally thought. Of course it is a whole lot better than it used to be, but it is still a lot more apparent today than you would think.
